SUMMARY:Amy Hagstrom will be reading and discussing her writing process for her novel The Wild Between Us
DESCRIPTION:The rescue of two missing boys in the Sierra Nevada mountains relies on unraveling the mysteries of the past in an addictive novel of heartrending suspense. \nAfter inheriting his uncle’s lodge\, Silas Matheson hopes the grandeur of the California Sierra Nevada will be a fresh start for his two young sons\, and a chance to finally face his demons. It was here\, fifteen years ago\, that Silas and his friends Jessica\, Danny\, and Meg ventured into the mountain wilderness and Jessica vanished without a trace. When his boys go missing in the same dark woods\, the fear and guilt that Silas has been running from ever since come crashing back. \nSilas’s panicked call brings in the local search-and-rescue unit\, and two familiar faces: Danny and Meg. As the frantic search gets underway\, the three friends are plunged into a painfully recurring nightmare\, each of them thinking\, This can’t be happening again. \nWith a storm brewing and the boys’ fates threatened with every desperate hour\, the secrets of the past begin to surface\, and this time\, for Silas\, Danny\, and Meg\, there’s no escaping the truth.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Universe: A Deep Dive into the Wonders of the Night Sky with Ms. Galaxy
DESCRIPTION:Join Jessica Vineyard\, aka Ms. Galaxy\, as she takes you on a journey into the farthest reaches of the cosmos. Her engaging and entertaining presentations make astronomy fun\, entertaining\, and easy to understand. This is a don’t-miss opportunity! \nWe live in an extraordinary time with respect to exploration of the universe. The Hubble Space Telescope\, launched in 1990\, and the James Webb Telescope\, launched in 2021\, have expanded our view of the universe beyond all expectations. Utilizing the phenomenal images that these space telescopes have sent back to our home planet\, Ms. Galaxy will share her extensive knowledge of the stars and deep sky objects\, including globular clusters\, galaxies\, supernovas\, and more. \nJessica Vineyard\, “Ms. Galaxy” has found that most people are curious about and interested in the night sky and all its wondrous glories\, but very few have more than a passing understanding of the spectacular images taken by our space telescopes. The size and distance of these stunningly beautiful objects are beyond our human comprehension\, but we can certainly marvel at and appreciate our current understanding of how they came into being and what\, exactly\, we’re looking at. \nMs. Galaxy founded the Southern Oregon Skywatchers Astronomy Club in 1993 and was president for five years. She co-hosted The Milky Way Starlight Theater on JPR\, wrote astronomy articles for a local paper\, and has brought astronomy to the public through summer camps\, library talks\, OLLI classes\, homeschooling\, and more. She is available for private star parties (under the stars with a telescope). Her mission is to make astronomy fun\, entertaining\, and accessible to everyone. SUMMARY:Windows in Time: Out in the Valley: Southern Oregon LGBTQ+ Histories
DESCRIPTION:Using items from the SOHS Collection as a starting point\, Dr. Anna Sloan will explore expressions of LGBTQ+ life\, identity\, community\, and resilience in Southern Oregon over the past 150+ years. \nLearn how the western frontier made space for some settlers’ alternative gender and sexual identities while simultaneously erasing Indigenous expressions of the same. Explore how changing social mores of the early 20th century affected peoples’ lives and livelihoods. Hear more recent stories of local LGBTQ+ community-building\, meaning-making\, artistry\, and resilience\, even in the face of discrimination and violence. Additionally\, attendees will learn about new efforts at SOHS to integrate more of these stories into our collection — and why this task is as challenging as it is important. \nDr. Anna Sloan (she/her/hers) is the Curator of Collections for the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS)\, and a Research Archaeologist with the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology (SOULA). She is passionate about connecting communities with their histories through the objects that reflect our lived experiences — from the smallest of pottery sherds to the largest of wagon wheels. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays\, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays\, in-person). Recordings of Medford presentations are available on the JCLS Beyond YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:“Healing the Heartbreak of Being Human\,” a teaching with Lama Karma Yeshe Lama Zopa (visiting teachers from Santa Fe\, New Mexico)
DESCRIPTION:Heartbreak touches our lives in myriad forms\, great and small. Sometimes it seems we glimpse our hopes for happiness through a hazy gauze of “if onlys” that keep us rushing outwards\, constantly busy and craving. We project possible fulfillment onto things\, others\, and experiences\, themselves incapable of satisfying our deepest wish. \nBuddha Shakyamuni\, the consummate healer\, offers myriad teachings and practices serving to salve\, and ultimately cure\, the longing that colors our days. Our very lives offer the priceless opportunity for encountering his path and practicing the subtle art of making it come alive in our own experience. \nCome join us in opening an exploration of the Buddha’s profound approach to healing the heartbreak of being human! \nKarma Yeshe Chödrön and Karma Zöpa Jigme are students of Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche\, and have been full-time practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism for over twenty years. Since 2005\, they have been teaching and translating Dharma texts and oral teachings from Tibetan to English for the Rigpe Dorje Institute for International Students at Pullahari Monastery in Nepal. \nIn 2016\, they successfully completed the traditional Kagyu lineage three-year cloistered retreat at Vajra Vidya Retreat Center in Crestone\, Colorado\, under the auspices of Kyabje Thrangu Rinpoche. They are passionate about sharing traditional methods for transmitting experiential understanding of Buddhadharma with Western students\, through their international Dharma community\, Prajna Fire. They also share the Buddhadharma actively through their Prajna Sparks podcast and frequent contributions to contemporary Buddhist journals. \nOnline & In-person Event: Zoom registration required. In-person registration recommended.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception - Summer Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Join us from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday\, June 13\, for the opening of our summer exhibition\, PACING: Photographs by Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak. \nComplimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served\, and the artists and curator will be in attendance. The exhibition will be on view through August 10\, 2024. New Masterworks on Loan and Highlights of the Permanent Collection will be on view in the Entry Gallery. \nAbout the Exhibition: \nThe act of pacing involves moving forward in a measured\, rhythmic manner\, where each step is taken in consideration of the one before it. “PACING” explores this duality of ease and tension through the lens-based works of three midcareer\, female-identifying photographers: Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak. Each artist employs performative methods to document their bodies and those of others\, reflecting on their relationships to social histories\, expectations\, and structures. \nMore information: https://sma.sou.edu/exhibitions/pacing-photographs-by-dru-donovan-melanie-flood-and-tarrah-krajnak/ \nImage: Dru Donovan\, Liberty Pose\, 2017\, Video loop\, 35 x 57 inches\, courtesy of the artist.

SUMMARY:ROBERTA TRACY READS FROM ZIG ZAG WOMAN
DESCRIPTION:“Roberta Tracy’s intricately detailed and engaging mystery charms away the fainted breath of a history of crimes… I surrendered deeply into this moving and ambitious portrait of a woman ahead of her time…”- Jerry Thompson\, editor Oakland Noir & Berkeley Noir \nThe last thing LAPD Detectives McManus and Tyson expect to find behind Pantages Theatre is a body rolled up in a blanket. \nThe last thing Margaret Morehouse\, one of the city’s first policewoman with arrest powers\, expects to do is join the investigation. When a deadly explosion at the L. A. Times derails their efforts\, Margaret finds herself at a crossroads and strikes out on her own\, a path leading to delusion and self-discovery on a vaudeville stage. Her husband’s nephew Leland further complicates the situation by sharing a ransom note and confiding his failure to report his wife’s disappearance at the Dominguez Air Meet. \nA brief stint as a magician’s assistant takes Margaret to Chicago\, where she almost signs on as a zig zag girl\, the term used for ladies performing in the “cutting-a-woman-in-two” illusion. Instead\, Margaret returns to the tumultuous world of early twentieth century Los Angeles. Reunited with McManus and Tyson\, she confronts prejudices and societal norms in efforts to identify a body\, clear Leland’s name\, and topple the stranglehold one powerful\, amoral person has over many lives. Their efforts lead to dead ends and misconceptions before truth comes to light. Love is rekindled and danger uncovered in unlikely places. Margaret goes from Zig Zag Girl to Zig Zag Woman\, no longer cut in two but headed on a clearer path. \nRoberta Tracy is a former staff greeting card writer and nonprofit worker specializing in services for seniors. She lives in Fairfield\, California\, and volunteers as an adult literacy tutor. She co-authored Come Dream With Me\, a work of creative nonfiction that is part travelogue\, part hippie nostalgia\, detailing the adventures of Inese Civkulis.

SUMMARY:PACING: Photographs by Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon University’s Schneider Museum of Art (SMA) is thrilled to announce its summer exhibition\, “PACING: Photographs by Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak.” \nThe exhibition will open at 5 p.m. on Thursday\, June 13\, and will be on view through August 10\, 2024. \nMeet the Artists: \nMelanie Flood has used the camera as a tool for self-expression throughout her life. Her photographs\, spanning from childhood to the present\, explore her evolving femininity and critique gender constructs through a blend of vulnerability and playful experimentation. \nTarrah Krajnak reclaims the photographic medium’s masculine history through her Indigenous transracial adoptee experience. Her interrelated works use the body to reenact lost histories\, employing rituals and performances to create a continuous connection between her presence\, the work’s origins\, and its future. \nDru Donovan highlights the strength and ability of the female body in both athletes and caregivers. Her crisp black-and-white images juxtapose the force and endurance required for various actions\, emphasizing the interdependence and mutual responsibility inherent in these roles. \nMore information: https://sma.sou.edu/exhibitions/pacing-photographs-by-dru-donovan-melanie-flood-and-tarrah-krajnak/ \nImage: Dru Donovan\, Liberty Pose\, 2017\, Video loop\, 35 x 57 inches\, courtesy of the artist.
