SUMMARY:Rogue Valley Men’s Circle Fire Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Weekly: A weekly Men’s Circle Fire Ceremony on Monday nights from 6:30-8:30 pm around the fire at the Island Fire Pit in scenic Lithia Park in Ashland\, Oregon. \nWhat could be more natural than gathering around the fire and talking about the challenges of being a man and/or assuming masculine roles in our current culture? \nCeremony: This Men’s Circle is conducted as a shamanic ceremony to establish connection and community. It is compatible with any religious and spiritual beliefs. We offer intentions\, smudge with sage\, and release things into the fire. A weekly theme such as “confidence” or “purpose” is introduced. \nTalking Stick and Fire Ceremony: A talking stick is passed to speak your truth on this topic and things coming up in your life. The Men’s Circle will be conducted as a fire ceremony as long as we are allowed to build fires this year. After this time\, a new form of ceremony will be considered to continue the Men’s Circle. \nInclusive: This ceremony is for anyone looking to awaken and integrate dynamic masculine energy and roles. This includes all gender identities and sexual orientations. \nDrug and alcohol-free: This form of ceremony does not utilize plant medicine or psychedelics. Please do not be under the influence of any drugs or alcohol during this ceremony. \nAge: This ceremony is for ages 18 and older. \nFacilitator: This ceremony is conducted by Michael Hoffman\, LCSW. He is a licensed psychotherapist and spiritual coach. He trained with a spiritual teacher/shaman for 22 years and offered psychotherapy and relationship counseling for the past 28 years. Michael’s role and responsibility as the facilitator is to ensure that the ceremony is emotionally safe. Judgment and criticism will be stopped. He will also encourage you to venture deeper into your dynamic masculine energy. \nDirections: The ceremony is at the Island Fire Pit in Ashland’s scenic Lithia Park. It is just south (away from downtown) of the Parks Office between the Cotton Memorial and Hillside on a small island in Ashland Creek. There is a parking area off Granite St. \nYou can just show up or register at https://www.naturalwayofbeing.com/rogue-valley-men’s-circle-ceremony. You can also get more information on this webpage. \nCost: The suggested donation is $15 per circle. You can pay at the ceremony with cash or Venmo. You can pay online with a credit card\, debit card\, or HSA credit card by registering at the above web address. \nQuestions: Feel free to call Michael Hoffman at 541-639-6246 with questions or concerns. Hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:David Evans reads from his new book of poetry Light Like No Other
DESCRIPTION:David Evans brings his wisdom\, immense heart\, and deep reverence for life to his second collection of poems\, “Light Like No Other.” \nIn this intimate collection\, Evans explores his evolving relationship with self\, spirituality\, and the natural world. With a conversational lyricism\, he meditates on healing from childhood trauma\, shame\, regret\, and self-judgment. His poems embody what it means to love fully\, move towards peace with our lives\, and find a tender acceptance of our mortality. The vulnerable pieces reveal a growing courage to feel deeply and face life as it is. \nEvans’ poems come alive with imagery of circling hawks\, flocks of geese\, soaring gulls\, chatting finches and talking mountains. On long walks over coastal beaches\, wetland paths\, along river banks\, and trails through headland forests\, his beloved Oregon sings with startling clarity\, providing the backdrop for his emerging self-love and a profoundly awakened relationship to life. He revises his old ideas about God and embraces a deep sense of gratitude and joy through a deeply felt inter-connectedness with the creative energy of the natural world. “Is this prayer enough?” he muses. “Where are you now Lord?” “Ask the sparrows. They will tell you. The whole universe is singing!” \nA gorgeous book for all seasons of life\, Light Like No Other will newly awaken you to the luminous beauty of the world and leave you tenderhearted and brimming with gratitude. –Rebecca Jamieson\, author of The Body of All Things

SUMMARY:Free program: Transcontinental Railroad
DESCRIPTION:In the previous lecture\, we covered how railroading came to Southern Oregon. This time\, attempts will be made to put our nail in history in a wider perspective highlighting the post-Civil War transcontinental railroad construction and its implications to opening the American west. Moreover\, a century later\, the progression from railroads to the automobile and then aviation. \n“My name is Robert Hirning\, and having attained the ripe age of 80\, I can even remember the age of steam from childhood when it all began. My father and cousin were inveterate train riders and often took me along on adventures\, sparking a lifelong desire to ride the rails. In adulthood I crossed the continent by train over 25 times\, covered most states in Mexico and Canadian provinces\, and a twelve-day journey across Siberia. In the 1970s I hopped more than a few freight trains across the western states.” \nCost: Free to all

SUMMARY:Victor Lodato will be reading and signing his new novel Honey
DESCRIPTION:Meet a woman as tenacious as Elizabeth Strout’s Olive Kitteridge and as irresistible as Andrew Sean Greer’s Arthur Less: Honey Fasinga\, the glamorous daughter of a notorious New Jersey mobster\, is returning home at last\, ready to reckon with her violent past. \nAs a rebellious teenager\, Honey managed to escape her father’s circle of influence and reinvent herself in a world of art and beauty\, working for a high-end auction house in Los Angeles. Now in her twilight years\, she decides to return home and unexpectedly falls in love. But in her family\, nothing has changed. When her grandnephew Michael bursts into her life in what appears to be a drug-fueled frenzy\, and her Lexus gets jacked\, it’s hard to keep minding her own business. As old cruelties begin to resurface\, Honey is no longer sure what she really wants–to forgive or to avenge. \nThis electrifying literary breakout from PEN USA Award-winning author Victor Lodato is a masterful and deeply moving portrait of love in all its forms\, of moral ambiguity\, and of inspiring change–a story of female rage that asks the question: What are the limits of compassion in a world gone mad? \nVictor Lodato is a playwright and the author of the novels Edgar and Lucy and Mathilda Savitch\, winner of the PEN USA Award for Fiction. The recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and The National Endowment for the Arts\, his stories and essays regularly appear in The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, Granta\, and elsewhere. His novels and plays have been translated into eighteen languages. Born and raised in New Jersey\, he now lives in Oregon and Arizona.

Join Glen Alex\, LCSW\, for this insightful and inspiring lecture on Living In Total Health\, true health. You will learn how the mental\, emotional\, and spiritual elements of health that society ignores impact true health. \nGlen Alex is Author of the award-winning book\, Living In Total Health\, health blogs\, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker\, a Licensed Massage Therapist\, USPTA Certified Tennis Coach\, Burnalong Instructor\, Wisdom App Top Mentor\, Founder and Executive Director of former G. Alex Foundation\, Marquis Who’s Who Inductee\, and Host of the award-winning podcast\, The Glen Alex Show. \nGlen Alex’s life’s work is about health\, with careers in social work\, writing\, charity\, therapeutic massage\, and tennis. Her transformative mission is to help others be joyful\, connected\, confident\, and complete\, the life experience she calls Wellth\, which is health + other riches. \nGlen’s journey in the health space began with boundaries. As a child\, she was so engaged by the nuance of interaction—when people smiled\, cringed\, and when pain crossed their faces. Glen clearly remembers vowing to not be the one to cause another person pain\, unnecessarily. She saw boundaries respected and boundaries violated\, and it stuck. From that\, Glen’s work expanded to other areas of health and she developed a unique and no nonsense perspective to help others lead their healthiest and most joyful life. SUMMARY:State of the Free Press 2024: The Importance of an Independent Press and Critical Media Literacy in a “Post-Truth” World
DESCRIPTION:In the age of new and powerful tools of communication\, democracy has become more fragile and vulnerable to attacks by ideological extremists and partisans. \nWhat is clear is that the tools of communication\, culture\, literacy\, and critical thinking are more crucial than ever in creating both informed citizens and maintaining a substantive democracy. \nSTATE OF THE FREE PRESS 2024 comes at a time when trust in the media is at an all-time low. A 2022 Gallup poll found that just one in nine Americans had confidence in TV news\, and fewer than one in six believed in the printed press. A subsequent survey revealed that no fewer than half of Americans believe national news organizations intentionally deceive the public in order to suit their own agendas. It’s a grim reality that threatens the public’s ability to hold the powerful to account and stifles access to the high-quality information that is the lifeblood of democracy. \nMICKEY HUFF is the director of Project Censored and president of the nonprofit Media Freedom Foundation. To date\, he has co-edited fourteen editions of the Project’s yearbook\, including\, most recently\, Project Censored’s State of the Free Press 2022\, with Andy Lee Roth. He is also co-author with Nolan Higdon of United States of Distraction and the critical thinking textbook Let’s Agree to Disagree. Huff received the Beverly Kees Educator Award as part of the 2019 James Madison Freedom of Information Award from the Society of Professional Journalists\, Northern California. \nHe is professor of social science\, history\, and journalism at Diablo Valley College\, where he co-chairs the history program and is chair of the Journalism Department. Huff is executive producer and host of The Project Censored Show\, a weekly syndicated public affairs program that airs on 50 stations across the U.S. on Pacifica Radio.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Teaching at OLLI at Southern Oregon University Course
DESCRIPTION:In April 2024\, OLLI will hold a course dedicated to learning more about teaching at OLLI. Participants do not need to be a member of OLLI to participate in the course. \nThe course is not required in order to teach at OLLI\, but it will provide a lot of information that will be helpful in creating your OLLI course and completing your first course proposal form. \nHave you ever wondered what it would be like to teach an OLLI course yourself? This three-session course is designed to answer that question and to help you prepare a course. We’ll talk about OLLI demographics and the OLLI learner. You’ll hear from experienced instructors about teaching online and in the classroom\, and the art of lecturing and leading discussions. Seasoned instructors will also help you with your own course design during the final session. This course will be led by the OLLI Curriculum Committee and will include some distinguished guests. Join us to see how your dedication to lifelong learning can include the creative endeavor of course design and teaching. Join us to learn how sharing your passion can bring joy to yourself and others. \nThe facilitators of this course are the co-chairs of the Curriculum Committee\, Ginny Blankinship and Anne Coleman. Support for teaching this course also comes from committee members who specialize in technology or a specific curriculum area. Many of these are also OLLI instructors who love sharing their skills\, knowledge and enthusiasm with OLLI members\, and who look forward to sharing their teaching experience as well.

SUMMARY:Duo Violão Brasil Plus One @ Grizzly Peak Winery
DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Music Project welcomes for the first time in southern Oregon\, Duo Violão Brasil Plus One. This will be part of a residency partnership with Britt Education\, and the group will visit a number of schools while they’re in southern Oregon. The concert takes place at 7 p.m. Friday\, April 19 at Grizzly Peak Winery in Ashland. \nDuo Violão Brasil is the result of guitarists Rogério Souza and Edinho Gerber’s reverence for Brazilian guitar\, the “violão”\, and their desire to explore and expand the musical possibilities of putting two “violões” together. A master of both 6 and 7 string guitars\, Rogério Souza is one of the foremost representatives of the music of Rio de Janeiro. He is an award-winning composer and arranger who has worked with a veritable who’s who of Brazilian artists. Duo Violão is joined by pandeiro player and percussionist Ami Molinelli\, who records with Grupo Falso Baiano\, one of the leading American choro bands. With repertoire from composers like Pixinguinha\, Baden Powell\, and Tom Jobim\, they navigate effortlessly through the many styles of 20th century Brazilian popular music while showcasing original works and inventive arrangements.
