SUMMARY:Rogue Valley Men’s Circle Fire Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Weekly: A weekly Men’s Circle Fire Ceremony on Monday nights from 6:30-8:30 pm around the fire at the Island Fire Pit in scenic Lithia Park in Ashland\, Oregon. \nWhat could be more natural than gathering around the fire and talking about the challenges of being a man and/or assuming masculine roles in our current culture? \nCeremony: This Men’s Circle is conducted as a shamanic ceremony to establish connection and community. It is compatible with any religious and spiritual beliefs. We offer intentions\, smudge with sage\, and release things into the fire. A weekly theme such as “confidence” or “purpose” is introduced. \nTalking Stick and Fire Ceremony: A talking stick is passed to speak your truth on this topic and things coming up in your life. The Men’s Circle will be conducted as a fire ceremony as long as we are allowed to build fires this year. After this time\, a new form of ceremony will be considered to continue the Men’s Circle. \nInclusive: This ceremony is for anyone looking to awaken and integrate dynamic masculine energy and roles. This includes all gender identities and sexual orientations. \nDrug and alcohol-free: This form of ceremony does not utilize plant medicine or psychedelics. Please do not be under the influence of any drugs or alcohol during this ceremony. \nAge: This ceremony is for ages 18 and older. \nFacilitator: This ceremony is conducted by Michael Hoffman\, LCSW. He is a licensed psychotherapist and spiritual coach. He trained with a spiritual teacher/shaman for 22 years and offered psychotherapy and relationship counseling for the past 28 years. Michael’s role and responsibility as the facilitator is to ensure that the ceremony is emotionally safe. Judgment and criticism will be stopped. He will also encourage you to venture deeper into your dynamic masculine energy. \nDirections: The ceremony is at the Island Fire Pit in Ashland’s scenic Lithia Park. It is just south (away from downtown) of the Parks Office between the Cotton Memorial and Hillside on a small island in Ashland Creek. There is a parking area off Granite St. \nYou can just show up or register at https://www.naturalwayofbeing.com/rogue-valley-men’s-circle-ceremony. You can also get more information on this webpage. \nCost: The suggested donation is $15 per circle. You can pay at the ceremony with cash or Venmo. You can pay online with a credit card\, debit card\, or HSA credit card by registering at the above web address. \nQuestions: Feel free to call Michael Hoffman at 541-639-6246 with questions or concerns. Hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Poetry Reading with Philip Runia and Destinee
DESCRIPTION:Philip Runia is a writer and editor based in Portland\, OR. Their work has been published in the Daily Iowan\, Little Village Magazine\, Fools Magazine\, and their debut poetry collection Curses & Prayers. \nThey enjoy serving literary reviews; they were Fiction Editor for Earthwords and are currently Associate Fiction Editor of Brink. \nAs an editor\, they find purpose in facilitating the shine of underrepresented and innovative writers while growing in their own writing. Philip’s writing focuses on ideas of generational trauma and belonging\, affectation\, and the awkward balance between individual planes of existence. \nDestinee (she/her) began writing and performing spoken word poetry mid-2023 but has always been drawn to and enjoyed writing generally. Spoken word is a medium that allows her to practice intentional vulnerability\, process life experiences and explore complex emotions\, thoughts\, and feelings. With her writing she hopes to encourage self expression as well as open a space for others to expand their minds by provoking thought and inner reflection.

SUMMARY:contemp • orary (April First Friday Art Walk Pop-Up Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:Art is a crucial part of our lives\, bringing our community together physically and culturally through its ability to share relatable stories\, inspire reflection\, and form connections through engaging conversations. When The Haines & Friends Visual Arts Grant Program temporarily acquired a vacant space in Downtown Ashland\, their goal was to do just this… Collaborate with local artists to utilize the space in a creative and meaningful way by providing them with a physical space to display and sell their artwork\, as well as enhance our visual arts community as a whole. \ncontemp • orary is a collection of artworks that pushes traditional boundaries\, with each artist exploring the endless possibilities of their materials to redefine creative expression. Through sculpture\, poetry\, painting\, and more\, each artist has challenged conventional norms to redefine the possibilities of visual storytelling\, inviting viewers to embark on a personal journey of discovery\, wonder\, and reflection. Participating artists include Cheri Ball\, Naia Duggan\, Chella Maize\, Indigo Palmer\, Alison Saunders\, and Manya Yana Campos. \nCurated by Paige Gerhard\, contemp • orary will function as a one night only pop-up exhibition during April First Friday Art Walk\, taking place from 5 to 8 p.m.  Friday\, April 5\, at 88 North Main Street in Downtown Ashland. \nMore Information: www.hainesandfriends.org

SUMMARY:Lama Sundays – Calm Abiding Meditation
DESCRIPTION:This meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \n“From this practice\, we can experience a stable and calm mind. We learn to maintain and return to a sense of stillness\, no matter what our outer circumstances. The mind is relaxed\, alert and aware. The results of this practice are serenity\, freedom in the face of circumstances\, and ultimately Buddhahood.” From Meditation for Beginners\, by Bokar Rinpoche \nJoin in-person or via Zoom (hybrid). Please contact the office to receive our monthly emails and the Zoom link for this practice: OFFICE@KSCASHLAND.ORG \nHeld 9 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday\, Feb. 4\, March 10\, and April 7.

SUMMARY:Sunday Service: Our Commitment to Transformation
DESCRIPTION:When the Article II process began\, one of the things that many people hoped would become explicit is our willingness to be changed by being in community. \nThe Commission was determined to go beyond agreement with ideas to commitment to values that we knew would challenge us to grow\, change\, and become more willing to embody in the world. What transformations does Unitarian Universalism invite us to engage? \n“Change is inevitable\, but transformation is a choice. ” – Heather Ash Amara \nAttend in person or watch live or recorded on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@roguevalleyunitarianuniver8871

SUMMARY:From Thorns to Blossoms: A Japanese American Family in War and Peace with author Mitzi Asai Loftus
DESCRIPTION:“Mitsuko “Mitzi” Asai was not yet ten years old in the spring of 1942 when President Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066 sent 120\,000 people of Japanese ancestry–about two-thirds of them US citizens–from their homes on the West Coast to inland prison camps. \nThey included Mitzi and most of her family\, who operated a fruit orchard in Hood River\, Oregon. The Asais spent much of World War II in the camps while two of the older sons served in the Pacific in the U.S. Army. Three years later\, when the camps began to close\, the family returned to Hood River to find an altered community. Shop owners refused to serve neighbors they had known for decades; racism and hostility were open and largely unchecked. Humiliation and shame drove teenaged Mitzi to reject her Japanese heritage\, including her birth name. More than a decade later\, her life took another turn when a Fulbright grant sent her to teach in Japan\, where she reconnected with her roots. In “From Thorns to Blossoms\,” Mitzi recounts her rich and varied life\, from a childhood surrounded by barbed wire and hatred to a successful career as a high school English teacher and college instructor in English as a Second Language. Today\, Asai descendants continue to tend the Hood River farm while the town confronts its shameful history. It’s the remarkable story of a transformation from thorns into blossoms\, pain into healing. \nBorn on a fruit orchard in Hood River\, Oregon\, in 1932\, Mitzi Asai Loftus spent three years of her childhood in government incarceration camps in California and Wyoming. For more than seventy years\, she has given public talks about her family’s experience to audiences of all ages. Having lived much of her adult life in Eugene and Coos Bay\, she now resides in Ashland.

SUMMARY:Maureen Hicks discusses her new biography The Gift Shop at the DMZ
DESCRIPTION:When a Buddhist therapist contracts to counsel soldiers around the world\, her ingrained opposition to war stands in the way of happiness. \nRepelled but curious about military culture\, her careful listening to servicemembers and families leads to empathy and understanding for their challenges. In postings from the U.S. to Germany to Korea\, serving soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan\, she learns to respect and serve those enduring trauma. Forced to practice informal counseling\, she wonders how she can make an impact. When the too-rare sessions lead to a struggle with depression\, she must reach out with letters to friends. Can a deeper study of Buddhism steady her? The immersion in military culture grows more savvy\, sanguine beliefs – so she might wrest deep meaning from absurdity. \nMaureen Hicks\, Ph.D. is a psychologist with thirty years of therapy experience.
