SUMMARY:Award-winning author talk about the pros and cons of traditional and indie publishing
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning indie author Julie Mathison will be speaking at Bloomsbury Books about her path to publication and the pros and cons of indie publishing. \nShe came to independent publishing after years of pursuing the traditional dream\, securing a top agent\, making the rounds to the “Big Five” of New York publishing houses ~ and ultimately relinquishing that dream for the path less traveled. This talk will be an exploration of lessons learned from the journey through both worlds and will probe how the marketplace shapes our shared literary canon. The author will invite questions\, anecdotes\, and participation from the audience\, writers and readers alike.

DESCRIPTION:Award-winning indie author Julie Mathison came to independent publishing after years of pursuing the traditional dream\, securing a top agent\, making the rounds to the “Big Five” of New York publishing houses ~ and ultimately relinquishing that dream for the path less traveled. \nIn an age that increasingly celebrates minority voices\, she has become passionate about the kind of diversity pioneered by small\, micro\, and author presses\, one based on artistic identity ~ a diversity of content\, voice\, and sensibility. This talk will be an exploration of lessons learned from the journey through both worlds. It will examine the pros and cons of the traditional and indie publishing paradigms and will probe how the marketplace shapes our shared literary canon. The author will invite questions\, anecdotes\, and participation from the audience\, writers and readers alike.

SUMMARY:Rakish (Celtic and American Folk)
DESCRIPTION:Rakish\, among America’s top Celtic/Americana folk duos\, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday July 29 in an intimate house concert in Ashland\, Oregon. \nRakish is fiddler/vocalist Maura Shawn Scanlin and guitarist Conor Hearn\, both Boston-based musicians. As players\, the two have played\, studied\, and bathed in folk music since childhood. As a result\, their shows demonstrate an uncommonly deep understanding of Scottish\, Irish\, and American folk traditions. \nThe two\, as David Templeton wrote in Strings Magazine\, are “naturally nimble and stylistically well-matched\, (and have) a genuinely infectious sense of delight\, heart\, and jubilation.” \nRakish released its first album\, Counting Down The Hours\, in 2022\, available on all platforms. The band will be playing cuts from it along with others from their forthcoming album\, Now\, O Now\, due later this year. \nTickets for the two-set show are $20. SUMMARY:PACING: Photographs by Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon University’s Schneider Museum of Art (SMA) is thrilled to announce its summer exhibition\, “PACING: Photographs by Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak.” \nThe exhibition will open at 5 p.m. on Thursday\, June 13\, and will be on view through August 10\, 2024. \nAbout the Exhibition: \nThe act of pacing involves moving forward in a measured\, rhythmic manner\, where each step is taken in consideration of the one before it. “PACING” explores this duality of ease and tension through the lens-based works of three midcareer\, female-identifying photographers: Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak. Each artist employs performative methods to document their bodies and those of others\, reflecting on their relationships to social histories\, expectations\, and structures. \nMeet the Artists: \nMelanie Flood has used the camera as a tool for self-expression throughout her life. Her photographs\, spanning from childhood to the present\, explore her evolving femininity and critique gender constructs through a blend of vulnerability and playful experimentation. \nTarrah Krajnak reclaims the photographic medium’s masculine history through her Indigenous transracial adoptee experience. Her interrelated works use the body to reenact lost histories\, employing rituals and performances to create a continuous connection between her presence\, the work’s origins\, and its future. \nDru Donovan highlights the strength and ability of the female body in both athletes and caregivers. Her crisp black-and-white images juxtapose the force and endurance required for various actions\, emphasizing the interdependence and mutual responsibility inherent in these roles. \nMore information: https://sma.sou.edu/exhibitions/pacing-photographs-by-dru-donovan-melanie-flood-and-tarrah-krajnak/ \nImage: Dru Donovan\, Liberty Pose\, 2017\, Video loop\, 35 x 57 inches\, courtesy of the artist.

SUMMARY:Brazilian Spiritual Healing and Mediumship by Helene Vala
DESCRIPTION:What if we are all natural mediums and it is the degree of sensitivity and development that determines how mediumship unfolds in one’s life? We will discuss what mediumship is and show how effective Brazilian spiritual healing practices are and how they can produce miraculous results. \nBrazilians use and benefit from their spiritual practices on an everyday basis – from African Orixas to Spiritist seances and spirit Doctors doing psychic surgeries\, they rely on mediumship to receive what they need. \nHelene first went to Brazil at her guide’s request and discovered various ways mediumship works and the type of miracles it can produce. Curious as to how these miracles came about\, she embarked on a journey to discover the basis for the phenomena and spent 11 years living in Brazil learning and training alongside the Brazilian mediums. Helene has been a shamanic trauma clearing medium for over two decades with a private practice in Ashland\, OR. \nFREE ADMISSION – 1757 Ashland St.\, Ashland\, OR. One mile west of I-5 Exit 14

SUMMARY:A Healer Forged in Fire – a talk by author Cathy Morton
DESCRIPTION:Are you needing a dose of inspiration? Does a part of you feel forgotten\, or are you wondering if trauma has gotten the best of you? \nAuthor Cathy Marie Morton will inspire you with stories of how she has found freedom\, real joy\, and energy to share. Her journey to retrieve the lost fragments of her heart shows us what we are all capable of\, and she will share different ways people can mend their own tattered hearts to come home to their authentic selves. \nBorn into a loving carnival family\, Cathy was badly burned in a deadly fire at age 4. She had to fight to survive again as her father turned to alcohol and abuse. \nLonging to heal her heart and her scars\, she traveled the world working with master healers. With their assistance\, she uncovered her own gifts\, while her guides and angels manifested in spirit photography. \nCathy’s sheer tenacity\, courage and determination helped her evolve into a master healer. Her story is recounted in A Healer Forged in Fire. \nCathy Morton is a Crystal Reiki Master/Trainer\, drum circle host\, crystal grid practitioner and trainer\, retreat host\, mother & grandmother\, and entrepreneur. A 47-year Alaska resident\, now an 8-year Ashland resident (living on Alaska Street!)
