DESCRIPTION:The SOU Music Department presents SPECTRUM a concert that features all of SOU’s ensembles on Saturday\, February 22\, 2025 at 7:30pm at the SOU Music Recital Hall. \nThis concert is free and open to the public with a free livestream: https://youtube.com/live/8p2-f16F-20?feature=share \nDirected by Dr. Alexander Gonzalez. \nThe concert may include performances by: \nMUSIX (SOU’s Rock Band) \nWind Ensemble \nJazz Ensemble \nChamber & Concert Choirs \nRaider Band \nMaraval Road Steel Drum Band \nDulcet A’ Capella \nSmall Chamber Groups \nGuest Artist Soloists \nABOUT THE NEW DIRECTOR: \nDr. Alexander Gonzalez is the incoming Director of Bands at Southern Oregon University where he will conduct the Wind Ensemble\, Jazz Band\, and teach courses in music pedagogy. Prior to this appointment\, Dr. Gonzalez was previously the Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Additionally\, he has taught conducting courses at Capital University Conservatory of Music (OH)\, served as Music Director of the Professional School Orchestra (OH)\, served as the director of the Middleton Symphony Orchestra’s Wind Octet (WI)\, taught music history at Hillsborough Community College (FL)\, and was a public-school educator in Florida and Colorado where he taught an array of courses at the middle and high school levels. \nHis current research centers around the body of works commissioned by Robert Boudreau for the American Wind Symphony Orchestra. In partnership with Editions Peters\, Alexander has created a critical edition of Eugène Bozza’s Children’s Overture and will create forthcoming editions of other works in this unique catalogue. Dr. Gonzalez received a Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from The Ohio State University\, where he studied with Dr. Russel Mikkelson. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the University of Florida and a Masters in Wind Conducting from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Additionally\, Alexander is an active member in the National Association for Music Education\, the College Band Directors National Association\, the National Band Association\, the National Association for Music Education\, Phi Mu Alpha\, Kappa Kappa Psi\, and Tau Beta Sigma.

Directing work at ACT includes MFA Productions of Fuente Ovejuna\, The Good Woman of Setzuan\, Sueno\, The Skin of Our Teeth\, Happy to Stand\, and Saved\, as well as the world premieres of Staying Wild and Home Front. Ms. Lozano served on the Theatre\, Dance and Performance Studies faculty at UC Berkeley as both a teacher of acting and as a director. Directing credits there include Tartuffe\, Curly Fries- a webisode series\, and Men on Boats. She is currently an Adjunct Faculty member at SOU\, teaching Acting. Other directing work includes The Comedy of Errors\, The Importance of Being Earnest (SPARC Theatre\, Livermore Shakespeare)\, The Caucasian Chalk Circle\, (St. Mary’s College)\, A One Man Show\, Orlando\, Drawer Boy and Welcome Home Jenny Sutter (Theatre First). Acting credits include work with California Shakespeare Theater where she was an Associate Artist\, A.C.T.\, Berkeley Repertory Theatre\, Center Rep\, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Translation work includes Schiller’s Don Carlos\, which premiered in the 2018 New Strands Festival at ACT\, and Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle\, which premiered at the American Conservatory Theater in 2010.

SUMMARY:SOU High School Honor Band - Free Concert!
DESCRIPTION:The Annual SOU Honor Band for high school bands will be held at SOU on Friday\, February 21 through Sunday\, February 23\, 2025 culminating in a FREE concert at 1:00pm on Sunday\, February 23rd at the SOU Music Recital Hall. The best high school bands from across the Pacific Northwest will come together for a day of learning and engagement and will perform together. Directed by Dr. Alexander Gonzalez. \nFree livestream: https://youtube.com/live/G280MJgJ1y0?feature=share \nThe SOU Music Department is beyond excited to welcome roughly 60 talented student musicians from all across the valley for a weekend of education\, community\, and marvelous music. The students will work from Friday through Sunday (a very short amount of time)\, to put on a concert of incredible wind band music. They will also be treated to our annual Spectrum Concert – a sampling of musical performances by the SOU collegiate music students.” – Alexander Gonzalez. \nHonor Band high school students representing Ashland\, Clackamas\, Henley\, Crater\, Grants Pass\, Hidden Valley\, Illinois Valley\, North and South Medford\, Phoenix\, Klamath Union\, Mazama\, Riddle\, Ridgeview\, Roseburg\, and Talent High Schools are recommended by their school band directors and have to apply for and are selected based on instrument\, experience\, and video auditions for the privilege of participating in the program. \nThe weekend will be spent rehearsing\, performing\, and attending classes. Music classes will be offered in conducting\, audio and music production\, film scoring\, drumming\, and mallet making\, all taught by SOU faculty. In addition to the musical training\, the high school students will have the opportunity to stay in the SOU dorms\, eat on campus\, and experience “a day in the life of a college music student.” \nOn Sunday\, February 23 at 1 p.m. the high school students will perform a free concert for their parents\, friends\, teachers\, and the community. SOU’s Music Department hosts the Honor Band annually\, to inspire high school students and provide them with a glimpse into auditioning\, studying\, and performing music at SOU. Similar festivals are also available for high school vocal and percussion students. “This festival will have a long-lasting impact on students\, directors\, and families who attended\, and we hope to see many of these high school students choose to pursue their degrees in music at SOU.” \n– Alexander Gonzalez.

DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the Get Smart TV series and the James Bond movies\, Improv Alchemy will deliver a full-length improvised spy story complete with espionage\, covert operations\, danger\, sexual intrigue\, deception and humor. Allow yourself to be lured into the dark and dangerous world of vile villains\, complex gadgets\, spy heroes\, high-stakes missions\, thugs\, fight scenes\, car chases\, evil lairs\, seductions and betrayals as the players create a spy mission – spontaneously. \nThe shows feature the spontaneous talents of Andrew Jordan\, Becky Kagan\, Daniel Jokelson\, Emmy Graham\, Libby Sturgill\, Mike Roberts\, and Rochelle Webster\, and is directed by Eve Smyth. \n“License to Improvise” has three performances only; Friday and Saturday\, February 21 and 22 at 7:00pm and Sunday\, February 23 at 3:00pm at The Bellview Grange\, 1050 Tolman Creek Rd in Ashland. DESCRIPTION:A powerful story collection that celebrates those who strive and fail and strive again. \nIf Joseph Campbell’s dictum–“follow your bliss”–has become inspiration and goad\, accusation and cliché\, then the characters in David Borofka’s “The Bliss of Your Attention” are all the more puzzled by what their futures portend. Their bliss is never clear nor independent of others\, for the characters in these stories are ever in search of connection\, understanding\, and validation\, even if the latter–unlike reality and cynicism–is in short supply. \nAs the narrator of “Live with It” tells her would-be novelist husband\, “Learn to live with your disappointments.” \n“I mean\,” she thinks\, “I could give him the party line\, you know\, follow your bliss\, etc.\, etc.\, but that’s where the disappointments come from\, don’t they? I mean that’s where bliss leads if you’re no good at the thing that you think makes you happy.” Borofka\, whose collection “A Longing for Impossible Things” was selected by the American Book Fest as the 2021 winner of the American Fiction Award for the Short Story\, masterfully charts the spectrum of human emotion and the difficulty of connection in these pages. \nHapless and bumbling though they may be\, the characters in “The Bliss of Your Attention” continue to move forward despite all evidence to the contrary. As novelist Peter Manseau noted\, “The comedy of seeking is rarely so sympathetically portrayed as in Borofka’s hands; he captures perfectly the poignancy of dopey mortals dreaming and scheming to reach the divine.” \nDavid Borofka taught at Reedley College for more than thirty-five years before retiring in 2019. He now teaches in the Writers’ Program at UCLA Extension. The author of Hints of His Mortality\, A Longing for Impossible Things\, and The Island\, his work has appeared in Southern Review\, Massachusetts Review\, Shenandoah\, Image\, Glimmer Train\, and elsewhere.

DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2007 by Norwegian trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth as a fun and exciting collaboration between musical friends\, the ten-piece\, all-female brass ensemble tenThing (pronounced tenTing) has firmly established itself on the international scene to great acclaim. \nThe ensemble first came into prominence thanks to performances all over its native Norway\, eventually delighting a huge national audience by opening the 2011 Norwegian Grammy Awards. Soon after\, the group drew international attention after its highly successful appearance at the BBC Proms at London’s Cadogan Hall. \nThe concert program features varied repertoire\, including music by Hindegard von Bingen\, Florence Price\, Gabriel Fauré\, Camille Saint-Säens\, Astor Piazziolla\, and many more.
