Now let’s turn the focus to another distinguishing feature. \n“The Power of Public Art” is the topic of a free public discussion on Tues.\, March 5\, 4:00-5:30 p.m.\, in the Gresham Room at Ashland Library\, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Part of the “Big Ideas” program series\, it is presented by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Ashland Branch and Jackson County Library Services. \nThe speaker is Ken Engelund\, Chair\, Ashland Public Arts Advisory Committee. He will introduce a portion of the video “The Power of Public Art\,” discuss the function and purposes of public art in placemaking and outline the Advisory Committee’s role. Time for audience comments and questions will follow. \nEngelund was a vice president of human resources and a Realtor in California’s Bay Area before he and his wife Carol retired to Ashland in 1998. Other roles include Vice-Chair\, Jackson County Public Health Advisory Committee\, President of Habitat for Humanity\, Chair of Rogue Valley Choral\, a CASA volunteer and Chair of CASA Building Expansion Committee. Hear first-hand stories and experiences from Kelly’s long history as a responder with Ashland Fire and Rescue in Southern Oregon. \nKelly Burns was hired as the Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Ashland\, Oregon in February\, 2023. Kelly formerly worked as a Battalion Chief/EMT-Paramedic for the City of Ashland with Ashland Fire & Rescue for over 31 years. This compelling exhibition explores the urgent issues of our time\, delving into the mechanisms of war and colonialism while interrogating the unpredictability and legitimacy of armed conflict. It will be on view through March 23\, 2024. \n“What’s at Stake” sheds light on the devastating impacts of war\, human rights violations\, and environmental collapse\, compelling viewers to pause and reflect on our collective responsibility to one another. The exhibition raises essential questions about the consequences when violence goes unchecked and challenges us to consider what is truly at stake in a world grappling with these pressing issues. \nSMA Executive Director Scott Malbaurn shared\, “During a recent trip to San Francisco with museum members\, we visited solo exhibitions at Catharine Clark Gallery featuring Masami Teraoka\, Al Farrow\, and Zeina Barakeh. Recognizing the common theme of exploring the impact of war\, especially for artists raised in wartime milieus like Teraoka and Barakeh alongside the sculpture of Al Farrow\, which are assembled with war time munitions\, we decided to present these shows collectively as “What’s at Stake.” This group exhibition becomes a poignant question and statement\, resonating with contemporary violent events that seem to be happening all of the time globally.” \nAn opening reception will take place 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11. Curator Catharine Clark and select artists will be in attendance. The opening reception is free and open to the public; complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres will be provided. The Museum will be closed on Saturday\, Jan. 13 for a private event. \nNew Masterworks on Loan and Highlights from the Permanent Collection will also be on view in the Entry Gallery. Join us to learn more about the amazing history and evolution of plants on our planet. \nClassically trained at the UCLA Landscape Architecture program\, presenter Lucretia Weems is a Jackson County Master Gardener and has been designing gardens in the Rogue Valley for over 15 years. This compelling exhibition explores the urgent issues of our time\, delving into the mechanisms of war and colonialism while interrogating the unpredictability and legitimacy of armed conflict. It will be on view through March 23\, 2024. \n“What’s at Stake” sheds light on the devastating impacts of war\, human rights violations\, and environmental collapse\, compelling viewers to pause and reflect on our collective responsibility to one another. The exhibition raises essential questions about the consequences when violence goes unchecked and challenges us to consider what is truly at stake in a world grappling with these pressing issues. \nSMA Executive Director Scott Malbaurn shared\, “During a recent trip to San Francisco with museum members\, we visited solo exhibitions at Catharine Clark Gallery featuring Masami Teraoka\, Al Farrow\, and Zeina Barakeh. Recognizing the common theme of exploring the impact of war\, especially for artists raised in wartime milieus like Teraoka and Barakeh alongside the sculpture of Al Farrow\, which are assembled with war time munitions\, we decided to present these shows collectively as “What’s at Stake.” This group exhibition becomes a poignant question and statement\, resonating with contemporary violent events that seem to be happening all of the time globally.” \nAn opening reception will take place 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11. SUMMARY:Oregon Butterflies: What They Need to Thrive
DESCRIPTION:Join JCLS and the Jackson County Master Gardeners to learn about native butterflies and their habitats! This virtual presentation by Master Gardener Lynn Kunstman will share information about butterflies found in Oregon\, their native landscapes and food sources\, and how we can help them thrive. \nLynn Kunstman is a Master Gardener living in Medford\, Oregon. She has lived in the Rogue Valley since 1986. She holds a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management and a Master’s Degree of Science in Education. A retired middle school science and special education teacher\, Lynn’s students at Ashland Middle School established the school’s butterfly garden. Her first project upon retiring and moving from Ashland to Medford was to mulch out all the lawns on her property. Lynn’s entire front yard in Medford is now given over to wildlife\, planted with edible trees and shrubs\, as well as pollinator plants. The back yard is planted in fruit trees\, berries and vegetables\, for the humans. She is an enthusiastic advocate of gardens planted with wildlife\, pollinators\, and butterflies in mind.

Dr. Houston is noted for her ability to combine a deep knowledge of history\, culture\, new science\, spirituality and human development into her teaching. She is known for her inter-disciplinary perspective delivered in inspirational and humorous keynote addresses. \n“Jean Houston’s mind should be considered a national treasure”\, said Buckminster Fuller\, a renowned American philosopher\, thinker\, visionary\, inventor\, architect\, engineer\, mathematician\, poet and cosmologist. A life-long friend of Jean Houston\, his observation is shared by the thousands of individuals\, communities\, organizations and nations that have been and continue to be inspired by her words. \nUnity Community of Ashland is an Interfaith Unity Community founded by Rev. Maybe you just need some inspiration for your next cheese platter? \nIn this cheese pairing class\, participants will be invited to mix and match an assortment of cheeses and artisanal foods\, chosen to highlight some of the pairing principles used by industry professionals. We will then discuss some of the scientific research in the field of gastronomy that corresponds to these pairing principles. \nAs a former Cheese Master\, Cody Reese spent 8 years working in specialty cheese shops packaging\, sampling\, and peddling a selection of over 150 different artisan cheeses from around the world. During that time\, Cody delivered a variety of tasting\, pairing\, and cooking demos to help share the wonders of cheese with his customers. All cheeses provided will include dairy. DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon University’s Schneider Museum of Art (SMA) reopens at 5 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11\, 2024\, with a new exhibition\, “What’s at Stake.” \nCurated by Catharine Clark\, owner and founding director of Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco\, this exhibition will feature artists Zeina Barakeh\, Al Farrow\, and Masami Teraoka. This compelling exhibition explores the urgent issues of our time\, delving into the mechanisms of war and colonialism while interrogating the unpredictability and legitimacy of armed conflict. It will be on view through March 23\, 2024. \n“What’s at Stake” sheds light on the devastating impacts of war\, human rights violations\, and environmental collapse\, compelling viewers to pause and reflect on our collective responsibility to one another. The exhibition raises essential questions about the consequences when violence goes unchecked and challenges us to consider what is truly at stake in a world grappling with these pressing issues. \nSMA Executive Director Scott Malbaurn shared\, “During a recent trip to San Francisco with museum members\, we visited solo exhibitions at Catharine Clark Gallery featuring Masami Teraoka\, Al Farrow\, and Zeina Barakeh. Recognizing the common theme of exploring the impact of war\, especially for artists raised in wartime milieus like Teraoka and Barakeh alongside the sculpture of Al Farrow\, which are assembled with war time munitions\, we decided to present these shows collectively as “What’s at Stake.” This group exhibition becomes a poignant question and statement\, resonating with contemporary violent events that seem to be happening all of the time globally.” \nAn opening reception will take place 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11. Curator Catharine Clark and select artists will be in attendance. The opening reception is free and open to the public; complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres will be provided. The Museum will be closed on Saturday\, Jan. 13 for a private event. \nNew Masterworks on Loan and Highlights from the Permanent Collection will also be on view in the Entry Gallery. Museum hours will be Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is always free\, but a $5 donation is suggested. \nWhat:\nSchneider Museum of Art presents: “What’s at Stake \nFree\, and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:The Ashland emergency severe weather shelter at 2200 Ashland St. will open at 5 p.m. \nThe doors close and lights go out by 10 p.m. \nThe shelter closes at 9 a.m. the next morning. \nThis is a low barrier\, no frill\, overnight shelter for anyone needing to get out of the cold. \nThe shelter is managed by OHRA (Opportunities for Housing Resources and Assistance)\, which will coordinate and staff with OHRA employees and volunteers.
