SUMMARY:SOU 5k Glow Run to Benefit the American Cancer Society
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon University’s Pre-healthcare Society is hosting a 5K Glow Run/walk to benefit the American Cancer Society. This event is a fun way to raise money for those affected by cancer. It will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday\, May 20 at the Raider Stadium\, 379 Wightman St.\, Ashland. \nThe theme is “GLOW\,” and we will provide glowsticks and glow paint! It will start at the stadium\, go down to the bike path\, loop around\, and end back at the stadium. There will be a ceremony where everyone can decorate luminary bags\, line them around the track\, and put battery-operated candles inside to honor those affected by cancer. The event will take place rain or shine. \nCancer survivors and those fighting cancer are free. Activities like bracelet making\, nail painting\, etc.\, will take place while the run is going on\, so those not running have something to do until the luminary ceremony.

SUMMARY:Religion\, Atheism\, and Critical Thinking: A Roundtable Discussion
DESCRIPTION:More than ever\, Americans describe themselves as atheists\, agnostics\, or “nothing in particular” when surveyed about their religious identity (about three in ten\, according to the Pew Research Center.) But what do these terms mean? The Jefferson Center invites members and guests to discuss their ideas on the subject at 4 p.m. Sunday\, May 21. \nHaving “no religion” might just mean it is not present in one’s life. But claiming atheism or agnosticism suggests that one has pondered the concepts and practices and made a decision not to be religious. Just as some religious proselytize\, some non-religious people assert that good critical thinking means one should be atheist\, or at least agnostic. One such person\, arguably\, was Thomas Jefferson. \nAt the same time\, stereotypes and discrimination against non-religious people\, especially atheists\, remains strong in our society. Atheists\, for example\, may be assumed to have no morals because they have no god\, or to be incapable of deep feelings such as awe and reverence. (Atheists themselves disagree.) What do non-religious (or anti-religious) people think about faith\, belief\, and the source of goodness? Should non-religious people keep quiet about their ideas in order to avoid offending the religious? Or to avoid being stigmatized by some religious? \nFor its next salon\, The Jefferson Center will host a “Roundtable” discussion in which participants sit in a circle and everyone has a chance to share thoughts about the topic. Very brief opening remarks and facilitation will be provided by the Program Committee. \nThe program will be held in the Jefferson Center space\, suite 101\, in the Old Armory Building\, 208 Oak St.\, in Ashland. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. Visit https://www.thejeffcenter.org/religion-atheism-and-critical-thinking-roundtable-discussion for more information.

SUMMARY:Ashland History - Stories of Triumph & Tragedy\, Humor & Ghosts with Peter Finkle
DESCRIPTION:FREE ADMISSION – 1757 Ashland St.\, Ashland; one mile west of I-5 Exit 14 \nAfter thousands of hours of rummaging through old newspapers\, internet websites and aging brains\, Peter has discovered hundreds of Ashland history stories. Among the stories you will hear this evening: \n\nHumor from a 1929 Ashland High School newspaper.\nHow did Ashland peaches get voted best in the country in 1893?\nLearn about one woman who did more than the Oregon Shakespeare Festival to keep Ashland restaurants and motels busy in the 1940s and 1950s.\nMeet one of the ghosts of Ashland – by name!\n\nPeter Finkle is the author of the premiere blog and website about Ashland: WalkAshland.com. He is a regular contributor to the online Ashland.News\, Ashland Living Magazine\, and other publications\, and also leads Ashland history and art walking tours. He received an Individual Award from the City of Ashland Historic Commission in 2019 for contributions to the historic Railroad District “Marking Ashland Places” project. He also cooperates with the Public Arts Commission to raise awareness of the rich arts heritage in Ashland. \nPrior to founding WalkAshland LLC\, Peter’s leading role at a nationally successful dietary supplement company brought him to Ashland in 1991. His education responsibilities at the company included speaking about health and nutrition to audiences in four countries. Outside his professional life\, he has been a poet and writer for more than 50 years. \nPeter has lived in Ashland for more than 30 years. Since founding WalkAshland\, thousands of hours of walking neighborhoods\, interviews with leading Ashlanders\, and deep-dive research have prepared Peter to share hundreds of fascinating little-known stories with you\, both in writing and in person. \nPresenter’s Website: https://WalkAshland.com
