SUMMARY:The Side Door: Rethinking Equity in a White Community
DESCRIPTION:Ashland is often celebrated as idyllic—a place where many people move to enjoy its beauty and charm. But in a community that is predominantly white\, does focusing on racial equity feel like a priority\, especially with pressing economic\, social\, and climate challenges? It’s a fair question—and for many\, the answer might be\, “Yes\, I care\, but it’s not something I focus on regularly.” \nBut what if there’s another way to think about it? If “the front door” represents traditional equity\, diversity\, and inclusion (EDI) work\, what if there was a “side door” that proved more effective—one that doesn’t exclude understanding the history of where we are? \nJoin Ashland Together team members Gina DuQuenne\, Hillary Larson and Harriet Watson for a lively and engaging discussion that might make you think outside the box when it comes to where we all live.

SUMMARY:Oregon Shakespeare Festival On The Radio: Changing Ashland and the Festival
DESCRIPTION:NBC radio aired an annual OSF broadcast starting in 1951. This began the Festival’s rise from a local theater to a national destination\, but in 1951 Ashland did not have the tourist infrastructure it has today. This talk explores the impact radio had on OSF and the town\, growing together until both were big enough to be sustained without the radio series. This talk celebrates OSF’s 90th anniversary season in 2025. \nMichael P. Jensen is a Shakespeare scholar of international reputation\, with over 100 published articles about William Shakespeare. He is the author of The Battle of the Bard: Shakespeare on U.S. Radio in 1937\, the first book about radio Shakespeare.

SUMMARY:Calm Abiding Sunday - Meditation & Teaching with Lama Pema
DESCRIPTION:Join Lama Pema for a guided Calm Abiding Meditation\, followed by a tea break and teaching. All are welcome. One Sunday each month\, from 9:00 to 11:30 am. \nIn this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \n“From this practice\, we can experience a stable and calm mind. We learn to maintain and return to a sense of stillness\, no matter what our outer circumstances. The mind is relaxed\, alert and aware. The results of this practice are serenity\, freedom in the face of circumstances\, and ultimately Buddhahood.” From Meditation for Beginners\, by Bokar Rinpoche \nPlease contact the office to receive our monthly emails and the Zoom link for this practice: OFFICE@KSCASHLAND.ORG

Charting Elaine’s promising early life through her years of motherhood and self-sacrifice\, finally tracing their relationship to its inevitable end\, Time Passages playfully explores Kyle’s conflicting feelings of love\, grief\, guilt\, and helplessness. Beneath the Kodachrome smiles and grainy Super-8 home movies lie the difficult truths that so many families hide. From his SXSW premiered documentaries University Inc.’s exploration of toxic higher-ed corporatization and American Cowboy’s sensitive stereotype toppling portrayal of a gay rodeo champ; to Sundance and Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight premiered fiction feature Room’s psychic journey of a working class woman in post-9/11 America\, Fourplay’s vivid investigation of sexual intimacy\, to Chicago set Rogers Park’s “eye for the intimate\, dividend-paying gesture” (NYTimes) that is “brimming with universal truths” (Chicago Sun-Times)\, his deep mining of human experience has the purposeful goal of facilitating community discussion\, as he tours with all of his works to converse directly with audiences in a variety of settings. Time Passages is his re-emergence as a documentarian after 20 years making fiction films.
