SUMMARY:PACING: Photographs by Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon University’s Schneider Museum of Art (SMA) is thrilled to announce its summer exhibition\, “PACING: Photographs by Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak.” \nThe exhibition will open at 5 p.m. on Thursday\, June 13\, and will be on view through August 10\, 2024. \nAbout the Exhibition: \nThe act of pacing involves moving forward in a measured\, rhythmic manner\, where each step is taken in consideration of the one before it. “PACING” explores this duality of ease and tension through the lens-based works of three midcareer\, female-identifying photographers: Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak. Each artist employs performative methods to document their bodies and those of others\, reflecting on their relationships to social histories\, expectations\, and structures. \nMeet the Artists: \nMelanie Flood has used the camera as a tool for self-expression throughout her life. Her photographs\, spanning from childhood to the present\, explore her evolving femininity and critique gender constructs through a blend of vulnerability and playful experimentation. \nTarrah Krajnak reclaims the photographic medium’s masculine history through her Indigenous transracial adoptee experience. Her interrelated works use the body to reenact lost histories\, employing rituals and performances to create a continuous connection between her presence\, the work’s origins\, and its future. \nDru Donovan highlights the strength and ability of the female body in both athletes and caregivers. Her crisp black-and-white images juxtapose the force and endurance required for various actions\, emphasizing the interdependence and mutual responsibility inherent in these roles. \nMore information: https://sma.sou.edu/exhibitions/pacing-photographs-by-dru-donovan-melanie-flood-and-tarrah-krajnak/ \nImage: Dru Donovan\, Liberty Pose\, 2017\, Video loop\, 35 x 57 inches\, courtesy of the artist.

SUMMARY:Poetry Reading – Rachel Barton and Louise Barden read their poetry
DESCRIPTION:Rachel Barton is a poet\, writing coach\, and founding editor of Willawaw Journal. She also serves as an associate editor for Cloudbank Books. Her collection\, This is the Lightness\, was published by The Poetry Box in 2022. \nHer chapbook\, Happiness Comes\, was published by dancing girl press in 2018. Barton’s recent publications include Across the Margins\, SALT\, SLEET\, Cirque\, and the Oregon English Journal. She is at home in the PNW\, but also has roots in Alaska\, West Virginia\, and Indiana. For more information about the author\, go to rachelbartonwriter.com. \nThe poems in Jacob’s Ladder are not so much steps to Heaven as they are portals going deeper into the daily. “What am I supposed to see today?” they ask\, which at turns will require hanging out with the dead\, dreaming of houses ablaze\, or\, more frequently\, re-considering chores\, garden\, relationships—while not forgetting clouds\, moss\, rain. The poems aim to live closer to one’s life. They are ready to walk through the next door. –Richard Robbins\, Oratory of All Souls \nLouise Cary Barden\, a 2023 New Women’s Voices semi-finalist\, has won the Lois Cranston Prize (Calyx Journal)\, Oregon Poetry Association award\, the Harperprints chapbook competition\, and others. Her poems recently appeared in such journals as Timberline\, humana obscura\, Willawaw and Cathexis Northwest. Her work is imbued with the imagery of nature as narrated by a self-described tree-hugger whose career indecisiveness led her from college English instruction to advertising and editorial copywriting\, and marketing management. After living from Maine to Wyoming\, she spent 40 years in North Carolina before retiring to Oregon\, where she is still trying to learn to love the rain.

SUMMARY:Turning Back the Rivers of Time with Fascia Decompression by Jessica-Mycelia
DESCRIPTION:At some point\, we all probably go “whoa-whoa-whoa\, what happened? I wasn’t supposed to get old and achy and all twisted up…stop this train!” \nAnd the train keeps rolling along. Little did we know how those surgeries\, or sports injuries\, or broken hearts\, or broken toes\, or moments of being shamed in the first grade…..or driving\, sitting at the computer\, crossing our legs\, slouching\, being “handed” left or right\, or any ways that we are “unconscious” was going to take us into the future. \nEven young people are suffering pain and degenerative problems these days. \nEver since we were tapped on the behind when we entered this realm and “took our first breath” and cried\, did anyone show us how to breathe? Much less why we breathe? Most of us are likely unconsciously in a subtle yet collective “fight or flight” breathing pattern. \nWe all have thresholds of comfort\, approach\, and courage to defy perceptions and explore new paradigms. In this presentation\, we’re going to do a functional fly-over of the deep and “fascinating” world of Fascia\, aka Connective Tissue: the body’s most abundant material. \nLearn about Fascia:\n• Its form – a fluid\, gel-like matrix that envelopes all other structures of the body\n• Its function – hydration\, sensing\, responding\n• Its purpose – protection\, perception\, communication\n• Its language – flexibility\, balance\, structure\, strength\, movement\, resilience\, awareness\, and\, very importantly\, pain and silence. \nWe’ll learn about Block Therapy\, a DIY (do it yourself)\, simple approach to gaining more access\, understanding\, and cooperation with ourselves by working with the Fascia system so that we can be directly involved in how we age(less)\, recover\, process\, and consciously turn the tides on aging\, degeneration\, and un-wellness. Specifically\, we will learn about decompressing Fascia\, breathing\, and bringing life back into tissues. \nJessica-Mycelia is dedicated to wholistic and simple approaches to life. As an international flight attendant in the 80’s and 90s\, she was touched by many different cultures and how nature and love shone through good times and bad; and how unbelievably resilient people really are. As a wholistic Aesthetician her approach to skincare and beauty is bringing out the natural glow and healing ability within each person. Her specialty is facial massage\, working with the fascia and lymph to cleanse\, uplift\, and rejuvenate\, along with the traditional Chinese understanding of raising “Shen” or the light within. She is at Waterstone Spa if you are looking for a facial! \nBlock Therapy and Fascia Decompression came along during a very difficult time in Jessica’s life as a lifeline and a pathway to unexpected healing and renewal. The practice is simple. The effects are profound. She recently became a Certified Block Therapy Instructor and is teaching classes at Inward Bound Wellness Pilates and Yoga Center in Ashland.\nAnd yes\, Block Therapy will get you feeling and looking more youth-full and healthier. Fascia is the Matrix. If fascia touches it\, fascia changes it. Can Block Therapy help you? Let’s grab a Block Buddy\, kick our feet up\, take a deep diaphragmatic breath and find out! \nFREE ADMISSION – 1757 Ashland St.\, Ashland\, OR. One mile west of I-5 Exit 14

SUMMARY:Windows in Time: Mining the Archives: Recent Discoveries Among the Glass Negatives
DESCRIPTION:Join Ben Truwe for an update on discoveries made during SOHS’ ongoing glass negative scanning project\, which is bringing thousands of new images to light. \nThis project has uncovered new photos by Peter Britt\, including the original negatives of his first successful trip to Crater Lake\, his tour up the Klamath River in the 1870s\, and his visits to the railroad construction camps in the 1880s. SOHS has also scanned a trove of portraits by Central Point photographer Robert Vinton Beall and mysterious images by unidentified photographers. This presentation will showcase the most intriguing of these scans of local people and scenes that have gone unseen for over a century. \nBen Truwe is a Research Associate of the SOU Laboratory of Anthropology\, serves on the West Side Community Coalition Board of Directors\, and conducts monthly historical walking tours of Medford. He is the author of the “Looking Back” Jackson County history books and creator of the Southern Oregon History\, Revised website. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays\, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays\, in-person). Recordings of Medford presentations are available on the JCLS Beyond YouTube channel.
