SUMMARY:Introduction to Teaching at OLLI at Southern Oregon University Course
DESCRIPTION:In April 2024\, OLLI will hold a course dedicated to learning more about teaching at OLLI. Participants do not need to be a member of OLLI to participate in the course. \nThe course is not required in order to teach at OLLI\, but it will provide a lot of information that will be helpful in creating your OLLI course and completing your first course proposal form. \nHave you ever wondered what it would be like to teach an OLLI course yourself? This three-session course is designed to answer that question and to help you prepare a course. We’ll talk about OLLI demographics and the OLLI learner. You’ll hear from experienced instructors about teaching online and in the classroom\, and the art of lecturing and leading discussions. Seasoned instructors will also help you with your own course design during the final session. This course will be led by the OLLI Curriculum Committee and will include some distinguished guests. Join us to see how your dedication to lifelong learning can include the creative endeavor of course design and teaching. Join us to learn how sharing your passion can bring joy to yourself and others. \nThe facilitators of this course are the co-chairs of the Curriculum Committee\, Ginny Blankinship and Anne Coleman. Support for teaching this course also comes from committee members who specialize in technology or a specific curriculum area. Many of these are also OLLI instructors who love sharing their skills\, knowledge and enthusiasm with OLLI members\, and who look forward to sharing their teaching experience as well.

SUMMARY:Waiting for the Kick- film with director Q&A
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Oregon Fringe Festival\, director Ilima Considine will be presenting her feature film musical\, Waiting for the Kick. \nOscar Wilde’s Salome is remade into a darkly comedic fever dream of a rock opera written and composed by the Ilima Considine of The Sexbots\, reset in an after hours club full of off-duty strippers\, bartenders\, and mountains of cocaine and John the Baptist is an autistic drug dealer. \nThis is a gay\, feminist retelling of Salome- retold not as a story of a man in power led astray by a teenage temptress\, but of a young girl caught in an impossible situation in a world where patriarchy forces women to objectify both themselves and others in order to survive. And yet\, in spite of everything\, young queer folk discover themselves and each other — irrepressible as dandelions growing out of a sidewalk. The 85-minute film will immediately be followed by a director Q&A.

SUMMARY:Plumbing the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument - Friday Night Talk
DESCRIPTION:The quote\, “Whiskey is for drinking and water is for fighting over” has been attributed to Mark Twain and frames the controversy over western water policies. Euro-American settlement of the west cannot be separated from the moving of water from sources to distant mines\, farms\, and cities. While California is the most plumbed of all states\, Oregon has a fair share of dams\, ditches\, and water diversions — including in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. \nWestern water development went into high gear with the 1902 passage of the Newlands Reclamation Act. Under the act\, the Bureau of Reclamation began development of projects all over the west\, including the Rogue Basin Project. This project saw water storage on both sides of the Cascade Crest and deliverance of a secure supply of water to the orchards and towns in the Rogue Valley. Many projects also include flood control and hydroelectric power generation. This presentation will look at the overall history of western water development up to the current removal of dams on the Klamath River. \nJohn Schuyler is a retired forester who received a B.S. in forestry from the University of California at Berkeley. During his 32-year career with the USDA Forest Service\, he worked on national forests in Oregon\, California\, and Arizona — working in timber management\, recreation\, minerals\, planning\, and administration. \nThe Friday Night Lecture will take place at the SOU Science Building in room 161 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. \nFriends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is a nonprofit organization\, and our mission is to support the protection\, restoration and conservation of the monument through service\, advocacy and education. Our Hike and Learn programs are designed to introduce the public to different topics and locations within the Monument. Hike and Learns are co-created with local scientists\, historians\, artists\, students\, and more.

SUMMARY:Pigs on the Wing: A Pink Floyd Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:Pigs on the Wing’s 2023-2024 tour\, “A Pink Floyd Retrospective”\, will feature a meticulously curated collection of the very best of classic-era Pink Floyd cuts organized into 2 distinct sets. \nRather than performing a single album from start to end\, expect to hear the band focus on their favorite sections of the classic albums\, including hits\, deep cuts\, and the band’s trademark willingness to explore the sonic space in experimental improvisation. Fans can expect an immersive visual show in a don’t-miss event for any Pink Floyd fan! \nFrom its garage-rock roots in 2006 as a one-off show\, to full album productions and performing for thousands of fans each year\, Portland\, Oregon-based Pigs on the Wing have built a loyal following dedicated to the band’s high energy take on Pink Floyd’s music. All members of Pigs on the Wing are seasoned veterans of the Pacific NW rock scene and are unapologetic in bringing their wide-ranging musical influences to the table. Setting the band aside from other tribute rock acts\, Pigs on the Wing balance a decidedly un-tribute-like attitude towards the music with precision to detail and a deep understanding of the importance of Pink Floyd’s music in many fans’ lives.

SUMMARY:Rogue Valley Men’s Circle Fire Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Weekly: A weekly Men’s Circle Fire Ceremony on Monday nights from 6:30-8:30 pm around the fire at the Island Fire Pit in scenic Lithia Park in Ashland\, Oregon. \nWhat could be more natural than gathering around the fire and talking about the challenges of being a man and/or assuming masculine roles in our current culture? \nCeremony: This Men’s Circle is conducted as a shamanic ceremony to establish connection and community. It is compatible with any religious and spiritual beliefs. We offer intentions\, smudge with sage\, and release things into the fire. A weekly theme such as “confidence” or “purpose” is introduced. \nTalking Stick and Fire Ceremony: A talking stick is passed to speak your truth on this topic and things coming up in your life. The Men’s Circle will be conducted as a fire ceremony as long as we are allowed to build fires this year. After this time\, a new form of ceremony will be considered to continue the Men’s Circle. \nInclusive: This ceremony is for anyone looking to awaken and integrate dynamic masculine energy and roles. This includes all gender identities and sexual orientations. \nDrug and alcohol-free: This form of ceremony does not utilize plant medicine or psychedelics. Please do not be under the influence of any drugs or alcohol during this ceremony. \nAge: This ceremony is for ages 18 and older. \nFacilitator: This ceremony is conducted by Michael Hoffman\, LCSW. He is a licensed psychotherapist and spiritual coach. He trained with a spiritual teacher/shaman for 22 years and offered psychotherapy and relationship counseling for the past 28 years. Michael’s role and responsibility as the facilitator is to ensure that the ceremony is emotionally safe. Judgment and criticism will be stopped. He will also encourage you to venture deeper into your dynamic masculine energy. \nDirections: The ceremony is at the Island Fire Pit in Ashland’s scenic Lithia Park. It is just south (away from downtown) of the Parks Office between the Cotton Memorial and Hillside on a small island in Ashland Creek. There is a parking area off Granite St. \nYou can just show up or register at https://www.naturalwayofbeing.com/rogue-valley-men’s-circle-ceremony. You can also get more information on this webpage. \nCost: The suggested donation is $15 per circle. You can pay at the ceremony with cash or Venmo. You can pay online with a credit card\, debit card\, or HSA credit card by registering at the above web address. \nQuestions: Feel free to call Michael Hoffman at 541-639-6246 with questions or concerns. Hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Awakening through your Natural Rhythms: Breath\, Heartbeat and Spinal Fluid by Nando Raynolds
DESCRIPTION:Join Nando Raynolds for an exploration of how perceiving\, supporting\, and following the pre-existent natural flows of energy and sensation in the body can power up your experience of being alive! \nApply your mindfulness skills to deepen embodiment. We’ll examine the physiology that underlies these three rhythms and then move into the more experiential portion of the evening. We’ll also explore the rich spectrum from control to surrender and how your position in this spectrum impacts the contents of your awareness. \nIf there is a more powerful flow happening through you\, something that is more fundamental than your own egoic effort to control and stay safe\, how might that manifest? If it were possible to support\, follow and surrender to that flow\, how would one go about it? If the Tao exists\, how can one perceive and follow the Way? \nMy suggestion is that you look no further than your persistent organic rhythms. Might not your breath be the first and most obvious pathway? By building your understanding of what is already happening all the time in your body\, you will more easily perceive it. Then\, you can support and surrender to it. Doing so makes rapid and delightful changes in your subjective experience of the present moment. \nNando is a skillful and entertaining presenter\, well-known in the community for his years of dedication to supporting residents in their pursuit of well-being. \nNando Raynolds is a psychotherapist with a somatic mindfulness focus. He is also a long-time T’ai Chi and Qigong instructor and holds a 5th-degree blackbelt in Kenpo Karate. He’s been helping people live mindfully in their bodies for 40 years. \nHis focus in counseling is helping people manage their thinking\, feeling\, and behavior with skill and compassion to achieve their goals. Through explorations of breath\, posture\, movement\, and sound\, his students and clients learn to embody their positive changes with joy and surrender.
