SUMMARY:The Total Flowering of Activity to Help Others: Profound Instructions of the Glorious Shangpa Kagyu\, A Special Weekend Retreat with Lama Sarah Harding:
DESCRIPTION:In the 1970s\, the late\, great Kalu Rinpoche traveled extensively in the West\, including North America. \nWhere there was interest among those listening to these early teachings\, Rinpoche gave the Chenrezig empowerment and recommended this service as a daily practice for anyone interested in Tibetan Buddhism and the strengthening of compassion. It had long been practiced at his monastery in India. \nLama Sarah will introduce the meditation\, and we will do the practice during the weekend. It includes The Four Thoughts Which Turn the Mind toward the Dharma\, Refuge and Bodhicitta\, and visualizing Chenrezig\, the Bodhisattva of Compassion\, as well as your primary teacher. \nThe practice unfolds as we meditate on compassion for all beings\, utilizing both Chenrezig’s mantra\, and the Tonglen practice of welcoming and offering. The meditation concludes with a renewing of concern for all beings and a dedication of the benefits of the practice to them. \nEspecially for this teaching visit\, Lama Sarah is providing a new edition of the service\, including a new translation. The wisdom dakini Niguma is associated with this practice\, so Lama Sarah will also teach on her translation of Niguma’s Aspiration Prayer. \nThis weekend will introduce the visualization style of meditation\, as well as the chance to deepen one’s connection to two compassion practices — Chenrezig and Tonglen. The teachings are suitable for those interested in learning more about either of these styles of meditation\, as well as those drawn to a new expression of compassion practice. \nKagyu Sukha Choling\, Ashland\nFriday\, May 2 (6 -7 pm)\, Introduction\nSaturday and Sunday\, May 3 – 4 (10 am – noon & 2 – 4pm) \nBase Tuition: $140\nReduced Tuition (for financial need): $90

SUMMARY:“Preparing for the Final Quest – Essential plans\, tools and tasks to develop before life’s end” with author Katherine Silver
DESCRIPTION:There are few milestone passages in our lives – births\, graduations\, marriage\, professional accomplishments. We anticipate and make conscientious plans to honor such passages – but tend to ignore the one we ALL experience – The Final Quest. \nPreparing for the Final Quest – Essential plans\, tools and tasks to develop before life’s end will inform the reader: \nHow not engaging in planning for our end can create crisis for our loved ones \nThe business of life and anticipating needs of your survivors \nThe language and assessments used by providers to discuss changing abilities \nHow and why to plan ahead for accidents and incidents common to aging \nAdvocating for your loved ones across the lifespan \nWhat changes are natural and expected on the aging journey \nResources for End of life\, hospice and aftercare \nThe author weaves a narrative story as a case study for each topic. The main character\, Rowan\, is assigned the quest to make Death an ally once again. Rowan’s journey with mentor Wim is written to both entertain and instruct us on the aging journey. Chapters begin with a segment of Rowan’s Quest\, followed by contemporary discussion of the business of life and the common changes experienced along the aging and end-of-life journey. Each chapter closes with a task list to help you develop tools\, find resources and embrace your new knowledge to prepare for your own Final Quest. \nMonday May 5th\, 7:00 to 8:00 pm

SUMMARY:How do you reconcile a lynching? A story of justice and redemption
DESCRIPTION:This event will focus on the legacy of Alonzo Tucker\, Oregon’s most widely documented African American victim of lynching\, and how his memory has inspired a movement for historical reconciliation. \nTaylor Stewart will share about how the search for an answer to this question transformed his life and taught him the potential to find true justice for Oregon’s history of racial injustice. \n“This story is not just about reconciliation; it’s about finding a way to heal and foster hope in our communities\,” Stewart explains. “By confronting these painful narratives\, we can begin to foster understanding and pave the way for a more just future.” \nGabrielle Johnsen\, founder of Grants Pass Remembrance (from Sundown to Sunrise) and Community Engagement Director of ORP\, will join the discussion. A Q&A session will follow. \nPlease register for the event at: https://ashlandtogether.org/event/how-do-you-reconcile-a-lynching-a-story-of-justice-and-redemption. \nMeese Auditorium address and directions are on the website.

SUMMARY:Thursday Evening Calm Abiding Meditaion
DESCRIPTION:This meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \n“From this practice\, we can experience a stable and calm mind. We learn to maintain and return to a sense of stillness\, no matter what our outer circumstances. The mind is relaxed\, alert and aware. The results of this practice are serenity\, freedom in the face of circumstances\, and ultimately Buddhahood.” \nFrom Meditation for Beginners\, by Bokar Rinpoche. \nTo attend Calm Abiding Meditation via Zoom\, email the office at OFFICE@KSCASHLAND.ORG to join the mailing list. \n
