SUMMARY:Joyce Maynard talks about her new novel How The Light Gets In
DESCRIPTION:In this follow-up to Count the Ways\, Maynard continues the story of 54-year-old matriarch Eleanor and her family. \nFollowing the death of her former husband\, Cam\, fifty-four-year-old Eleanor has moved back to the New Hampshire farm where they raised three children to care for their brain-injured son\, Toby\, now an adult. Toby’s older brother\, Al\, is married and living in Seattle with his wife; their sister\, Ursula\, lives in Vermont with her husband and two children. Although all appears stable\, old resentments\, anger\, and bitterness simmer just beneath the surface. How the Light Gets In follows Eleanor and her family through fifteen years (2010 to 2024) as their story plays out against a uniquely American backdrop and the events that transform their world (climate change\, the January 6th insurrection\, school violence) and shape their lives (later-life love\, parental alienation\, steadfast friendship). \n“If ever we needed a novel capable of healing our troubled\, world-weary souls\, that time is now. But where\, oh where\, is the book? Actually\, it has arrived: Joyce Maynard’s new novel\, How the Light Gets In. And what a gift it is.”\n— Richard Russo\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Empire Falls and the North Bath Trilogy of Fool novels

SUMMARY:Midge Raymond and John Yunker talk about their new novel Devils Island
DESCRIPTION:On a remote island off the coast of Tasmania\, an Australian wilderness guide embarks on a four-day hike with six guests—and arrives at their destination with only two. \nDevils Island is home to abundant wildlife and is the ideal place to re-introduce endangered Tasmanian devils. It’s also a region where travelers can see firsthand the unspoiled drama of Australia’s wild places. For naturalist guide Kerry\, the trip offers a respite from the grueling work of trying to save an endangered species. American college classmates Brooke and Jane have a chance to reconnect after years of estrangement. Two Australian couples hope to escape their big-city lives and enjoy the company of longtime friends. \nWhen Jane disappears on the first night\, the group assumes she has wandered too far in the stormy weather. Yet it turns out she has a secret connection to one of the other guests—and when another hiker is found dead in camp\, the group finds itself isolated by the worsening storm and wondering who among them might be responsible. \n“Devils Island is at once a riveting mystery and an eloquent plea to protect our natural world.” — A. J. Banner\, #1 Kindle\, Publishers Weekly\, and USA Today bestselling author \n“Devils Island isn’t just a compulsively readable mystery; it’s also a vital meditation on what it means to live through extinction in all its forms. I will not forget my visit to Devils Island anytime soon.” — Mindy Mejia\, USA Today bestselling author of To Catch a Storm and Everything You Want Me to Be \n“A terrific thriller. You never quite catch your breath as all of the secrets are revealed.” — Steve Berry\, New York Times and #1 internationally bestselling author of The Atlas Maneuver

SUMMARY:REBOOT: The New Human Operating System for a Busy World by Abigail Stason
DESCRIPTION:Are you feeling overloaded in our busy world? In a global gig economy\, where every system is stretched and the world is upside down\, humans are lonelier\, more disconnected\, and divided. Today’s challenges have left many wondering how we continue to exist and thrive. \nA new level of consciousness is needed\, where we are aware of and take responsibility for our impact on ourselves\, the environment\, and others\, inviting us to learn and adapt our behavior\, creating societies of agile human beings. This is the new Human Operating System. \nIn a world reimagined\, conscious humanity becomes an indispensable imperative for navigating the complexities of our time. Embracing this imperative is simple but not easy\, making it the ultimate challenge and opportunity of our lifetime. \nIndividuals yearn for something more amidst the challenges they face. However\, they often struggle to pinpoint the precise questions to ask: How can I foster better relationships with others? What lies at the root of my inner turmoil? How do I effectively traverse this complex landscape? How do I not only survive but thrive in the modern world? \nThere’s an elusive quality to it—craving something deeper and the practical skills essential for navigating today’s world. People grapple with the biggest existential question: Who am I amidst the complexities of today’s world\, and how can I navigate it authentically? \nA new paradigm emerges – one of conscious humanity. This means approaching our activities and interactions with heightened awareness. I invite people to behave differently\, assuming responsibility for our conduct\, comprehending its effects on ourselves and others\, and summoning the courage to reimagine what it means to be a human being and transcend the collective haze. \nIn this post-COVID complex world\, redefining our existence is within our grasp. We can transform stagnation into proactive steps. We can awaken from the trance and positively influence our surroundings. We can replace incivility with civility. Picture a reality where peace\, tranquility\, and liberty reign supreme despite daunting obstacles. Envision the impact if we infused an extra 15% of awareness into our conduct\, relationships\, and endeavors. \nThe urgency compels us to stop merely imagining and to start actively reimagining. To achieve this\, we must cultivate skillful human beings. Together\, let’s forge a path toward a world defined by peace\, tranquility\, and civility. \nJoin Abigail “Abby” Stason (she/her/hers)\, a master teacher\, skill builder\, thought leader\, published author\, and speaker for this provocative topic. Abigail spent most of her career as an executive on Wall Street before becoming an entrepreneur and social activist. With over 20\,000 hours of leadership experience\, she led through the 2000 dot.com tech bubble and the 2008 market crash. Abby left a 19-year career to follow her mission statement of being an exceptional partner to the human race and planet and to facilitate global consciousness. As a certified LGBTQ+ and Women-Owned Business and having experienced discrimination\, she is passionate about championing equality and lifting humanity. \nAbby equips human beings and leaders with behavioral skills for a modern world and global economy. Abby uses neuroscience to convert abstract learning concepts into pragmatic practices that apply in our day-to-day world. Abby is the author of Evolution Revolution: Conscious Leadership In An Information Age\, a handbook of human and leadership development skills that she converted to e-learning programs. SUMMARY:Windows in Time: Shady Cove: A Centennial of Life on the Upper Rogue
DESCRIPTION:Shady Cove\, located on the Rogue River\, has been a recreational hub for tourists and Jackson County residents since its incorporation in 1972. But how did it acquire its name? Originally known as Etna by 19th-century settlers\, the current moniker may have originated nearly a hundred years ago. Join us on this journey to explore the area’s settlers\, unravel the mystery of how “The Cove” got its name\, and discover the rich history of this picturesque community. \nKim Thurman is a member of the Rogue Valley Genealogical Society and Association of Professional Genealogists. A Shady Cove resident since 2008\, her family ties to the Upper Rogue date back to their relocation from Chicago in 1971. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays\, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays\, in-person).
