DESCRIPTION:My work implores viewers to reflect on their ecological interactions. I hope acknowledgment of past digressions will inspire a revision of our impact as co-habitants on shared land. \nI create art as a form of activism and land stewardship that fosters mutualism and intimacy facilitated by the reciprocal act of printmaking. Through illustration\, I conjure feelings of deep reverence for our inherent bond with plant and animal kin before they fade into distant memories due to human negligence. Radical renewal of our connection with the environment is necessary for our collective futures to even exist at all. \nFirst Friday Artwalk \nOn the first Friday of every month from 5 to 7 p.m. \n562 “A” St. between 4th & 5th \nWine and refreshments are provided. \nArtist Bio: \nVanessa Jo Bahr\, originally from Chicago\, Illinois\, received her BFA from Regis University in Denver\, Colorado in 2011 along with a minor in education. In 2012\, she received her teaching license and has taught art in schools\, universities and art centers in Colorado\, Oregon and Ohio. In 2022 she completed her MFA from Ohio University’s printmaking program along with an arts administration certificate. Presently she resides in Ashland\, Oregon where she recently founded the community printmaking studio\, Scavenger Studios\, which hosts various classes\, workshops and open studios.

DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to be co-hosting a reception for this year’s Medford District BLM Artist-in-Residence\, Serena Richelle. \nSerena Richelle is a gifted scientific illustrator. She combines science and art to raise awareness about the relationships that exist between species\, their importance\, their endangerment\, and what we can do to preserve them. \nSerena will spend two-weeks in the Monument this June surrounded by the lush forests\, rugged mountains\, and pristine waters that define this remarkable landscape. She will have the opportunity to explore\, sketch\, paint\, and create in an environment that inspires creativity. You can follow Serena on Instagram @serena_richelle. Samples of her completed artwork will become part of CSNM’s collection\, contributing to the ongoing dialogue about the intersection of art\, conservation\, and public lands. \nAt the reception\, Serena will showcase some of her art and give us a presentation on how her Artist-in-Residence experience has been thus far. Light food and refreshments will be provided . \nFriends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is a nonprofit organization\, and our mission is to support the protection\, restoration and conservation of the monument through service\, advocacy and education.

DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon’s second annual VegFest will take place at Tikkun Olam Farm Sanctuary (TOFS) from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday\, June 9\, 2024\, at 460 Hartley Road in Phoenix. Admission and all events for kids and adults are free. \nAs a fundraiser for TOFS\, items donated by local businesses will be raffled throughout the day\, and all proceeds from raffle ticket sales will benefit the sanctuary. The Hubble Space Telescope\, launched in 1990\, and the James Webb Telescope\, launched in 2021\, have expanded our view of the universe beyond all expectations. Utilizing the phenomenal images that these space telescopes have sent back to our home planet\, Ms. Galaxy will share her extensive knowledge of the stars and deep sky objects\, including globular clusters\, galaxies\, supernovas\, and more. \nJessica Vineyard\, “Ms. Galaxy” has found that most people are curious about and interested in the night sky and all its wondrous glories\, but very few have more than a passing understanding of the spectacular images taken by our space telescopes. The size and distance of these stunningly beautiful objects are beyond our human comprehension\, but we can certainly marvel at and appreciate our current understanding of how they came into being and what\, exactly\, we’re looking at. \nMs. Galaxy founded the Southern Oregon Skywatchers Astronomy Club in 1993 and was president for five years. DESCRIPTION:Using items from the SOHS Collection as a starting point\, Dr. Anna Sloan will explore expressions of LGBTQ+ life\, identity\, community\, and resilience in Southern Oregon over the past 150+ years. \nLearn how the western frontier made space for some settlers’ alternative gender and sexual identities while simultaneously erasing Indigenous expressions of the same. Explore how changing social mores of the early 20th century affected peoples’ lives and livelihoods. Hear more recent stories of local LGBTQ+ community-building\, meaning-making\, artistry\, and resilience\, even in the face of discrimination and violence. Additionally\, attendees will learn about new efforts at SOHS to integrate more of these stories into our collection — and why this task is as challenging as it is important. \nDr. Anna Sloan (she/her/hers) is the Curator of Collections for the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS)\, and a Research Archaeologist with the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology (SOULA). She is passionate about connecting communities with their histories through the objects that reflect our lived experiences — from the smallest of pottery sherds to the largest of wagon wheels. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. We project possible fulfillment onto things\, others\, and experiences\, themselves incapable of satisfying our deepest wish. \nBuddha Shakyamuni\, the consummate healer\, offers myriad teachings and practices serving to salve\, and ultimately cure\, the longing that colors our days. Our very lives offer the priceless opportunity for encountering his path and practicing the subtle art of making it come alive in our own experience. \nCome join us in opening an exploration of the Buddha’s profound approach to healing the heartbreak of being human! \nKarma Yeshe Chödrön and Karma Zöpa Jigme are students of Kyabje Bokar Rinpoche\, and have been full-time practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism for over twenty years. She lives in Fairfield\, California\, and volunteers as an adult literacy tutor. She co-authored Come Dream With Me\, a work of creative nonfiction that is part travelogue\, part hippie nostalgia\, detailing the adventures of Inese Civkulis.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting – Guitar Society of Southern Oregon
DESCRIPTION:The Guitar Society of Southern Oregon meets from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month in the beautiful tasting room of Paschal Winery in Talent. \nThe gatherings are open to the public\, and all are welcome. They start with a set of music by volunteer performers\, followed by an intermission to socialize and to discuss Society business and upcoming guitar-related events. The evening concludes with a second set of music\, sometimes performed by visiting or local featured artists. \nThe meeting program includes a wide variety of selections\, performed mostly on guitar\, and some vocal by amateurs\, students and professionals. Anyone may announce upcoming events during the intermission as well.
