SUMMARY:Eli Jaxon-Bear discusses his book An Outlaw Makes It Home
DESCRIPTION:“An Outlaw Makes It Home bares it all in this rapid-fire compilation of adventures…a serious quest for spiritual wisdom and enlightenment with a startling turn in his heartwarming discovery after an eighteen-year search. Jaxon-Bear does not spare himself or try to polish his flaws and mistakes\, and in that regard\, he is a warrior. I consumed this book in huge gulps and would do it again. I urge others to read it.” \n— Peter Coyote\, Emmy award winning actor and author of The Rainman’s Third Cave \n“…A coming-of-age story\, a modern journey of self-discovery\, but also a classic hero’s journey\, an odyssey\, and a return home…Eli takes us from a shattering moment in his Brooklyn childhood through radical and sometimes terrifying times in the sixties\, his escape to Peru and later travels in Japan\, Morocco\, and India … all leading to his waking up and discovering what home truly is. His honesty about fear and failure are moving\, but what really shines forth in these pages is a fierce love and commitment to the truth.\nI absolutely loved his story!” \n— Nancy Baker\, Zen Roshi and Professor of Philosophy Emerita at Sarah Lawrence College

SUMMARY:Psilocybin for Personal Transformation: Backed by Science\, Rooted in Results by Laurie Thompson & Denise Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Ashland Healing Center is a legal Psilocybin Service Center licensed by the State of Oregon. Owners Laurie Thompson and Denise Taylor are making history as a mother-daughter duo who opened one of the first legal centers in Ashland\, Oregon. \nRecent studies from top Universities and research institutions show that psilocybin can alleviate symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder\, trauma\, anxiety\, depression\, and addiction with just one dose. The results and studies dispel many misperceptions and stigmas associated with psilocybin. You will learn about: \n-Psilocybin clinical studies past and present\n-How taking psilocybin in a safe setting guided by a licensed facilitator is different from partying with friends\n-What to expect when you or someone you know comes for an experience \nLaurie and Denise have witnessed incredible results at Ashland Healing Center and will share examples of how psilocybin can help:\n-Transform depression to love (of life\, self\, others)\n-Relieve migraine headaches\n-Deepen spiritual experiences\n-Release trauma\n-Activate physical healings \nAshland Healing Center is a legal Psilocybin Service Center licensed by the State of Oregon. Owners Laurie Thompson and Denise Taylor are making history as a mother-daughter duo who opened one of the first legal centers in Ashland\, Oregon. \nLaurie Thompson: \nI am a facilitator because I am passionate about helping people change their lives. I believe healing\, transformation\, and better emotional and physical health are possible with one psilocybin experience. I am grateful to live in Oregon\, a state that allows legal use of plant medicine\, and sets regulations for its safe use. \nI raised two daughters as a single parent. My work history led me to The Boeing Company where I spent 38 years and became a technical lead in IT Cyber Security. I loved doing this\, as it was constantly new\, changing and offered opportunities for new thinking. I led teams to implement company-wide changes. I have always been an avid reader and learner. \nI retired in 2013 and began looking for service opportunities. I was a patient visitor for Hospice by the Bay in the San Francisco area. I started a mind-body eating coaching business. I have also been a CASA (court appointed advocate for abused and neglected children). \nFour years ago\, I became a meditator. I began believing in myself and changing my emotions. Coronary heart disease\, which I had most of my life\, is now healed and I am healthy\, vibrant\, and active at age 80. I have a deep desire during this critical and often-troubled time on earth\, when there are hopes for a better world\, a greater consciousness\, to be part of this change. \nDenise Taylor: \nFor as long as I can remember I have had a passion for caring for others. I have been a registered nurse for 26 years. I love interacting and connecting with people and helping them through difficult times\, and I am very good at it. \nOver the years I became discouraged with the healthcare establishment and my inability to help people. I learned about psilocybin and was amazed at the research and results – this led me to take my own journey. \nAfter my psilocybin experience\, I clearly knew that the mushrooms were calling me to share this with the world. I left my nursing career\, and in partnership with my mother\, we opened our own psilocybin administration center\, and I became a licensed facilitator. \nPresenters’ Website: AshlandHealingCenter.com \nFREE ADMISSION – 1757 Ashland St.\, Ashland\, OR. SUMMARY:AIFF ~ FREE Screening + Discussion “Divided We Fall”
DESCRIPTION:AIFF presents the powerful film on bridging divides\, “Divided We Fall: Unity Without Tragedy.” \nNew Voice Strategies proved on camera that\, despite divisions that are exploited and amplified on social media and cable news by pundits and politicians\, Americans are hungry for connection and unity. \nThey want the core of our democratic experiment –“We the People” to succeed. New Voice Strategies filmed strangers from opposite sides of our political divides – Gen Xers from Massachusetts and millennials from Chicago – gathered together for a weekend. They wrestled with what it means to be an American … our divides and our connections. \nAfter the 1-hour film\, experience a Discussion with Marla Estes\, of Bridging Builders\, an organization addressing the growing social & political polarization in our country.\nVenue: AIFF Film Center\, 389 E. Main\, Ashland

SUMMARY:First Friday Art Show in June with artist Vanessa Jo Bahr: Memento Mori
DESCRIPTION:My work implores viewers to reflect on their ecological interactions. I hope acknowledgment of past digressions will inspire a revision of our impact as co-habitants on shared land. \nI create art as a form of activism and land stewardship that fosters mutualism and intimacy facilitated by the reciprocal act of printmaking. Through illustration\, I conjure feelings of deep reverence for our inherent bond with plant and animal kin before they fade into distant memories due to human negligence. Radical renewal of our connection with the environment is necessary for our collective futures to even exist at all. \nFirst Friday Artwalk \nOn the first Friday of every month from 5 to 7 p.m. \n562 “A” St. between 4th & 5th \nWine and refreshments are provided. \nArtist Bio: \nVanessa Jo Bahr\, originally from Chicago\, Illinois\, received her BFA from Regis University in Denver\, Colorado in 2011 along with a minor in education. In 2012\, she received her teaching license and has taught art in schools\, universities and art centers in Colorado\, Oregon and Ohio. In 2022 she completed her MFA from Ohio University’s printmaking program along with an arts administration certificate. Presently she resides in Ashland\, Oregon where she recently founded the community printmaking studio\, Scavenger Studios\, which hosts various classes\, workshops and open studios.

Education and Community Service Grants assist individuals with achieving some sort of artistic project that will benefit our community such as teaching classes and workshops\, creating public art\, and more. \nAwardees include FolkSoul Farm\, Grants Pass Museum of Art\, LIFE Art Studio & Cultural Center\, Rogue Gallery & Art Center\, Vanessa Jo Bahr\, Gabriel Barrera\, Bruce Bayard\, Alex Brehmer\, Christian Burchard\, Diane Choplin\, Dara Daniel\, Kaya Doolaege\, Laurie Gadbois\, Zion Kroll\, Kristy Kun\, Betty LaDuke\, Abby Lazerow\, Erin Linton\, Scott Malbaurn\, Ryan Moon\, Micah Ofstedahl\, Mabrie Ormes\, Xavi Panneton\, Nick Simons\, Denise Souza Finney\, Daniel Sperry\, Leif Trygg\, Peter Van Fleet\, Carole Whitridge\, and Manya Yana Orescan Campos. \nThe Creative Awardees Celebration will take place during June First Friday Art Walk on Friday\, June 7\, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 88 North Main Street in Downtown Ashland. SUMMARY:Amy Hagstrom will be reading and discussing her writing process for her novel The Wild Between Us
DESCRIPTION:The rescue of two missing boys in the Sierra Nevada mountains relies on unraveling the mysteries of the past in an addictive novel of heartrending suspense. \nAfter inheriting his uncle’s lodge\, Silas Matheson hopes the grandeur of the California Sierra Nevada will be a fresh start for his two young sons\, and a chance to finally face his demons. When his boys go missing in the same dark woods\, the fear and guilt that Silas has been running from ever since come crashing back. \nSilas’s panicked call brings in the local search-and-rescue unit\, and two familiar faces: Danny and Meg. As the frantic search gets underway\, the three friends are plunged into a painfully recurring nightmare\, each of them thinking\, This can’t be happening again. \nWith a storm brewing and the boys’ fates threatened with every desperate hour\, the secrets of the past begin to surface\, and this time\, for Silas\, Danny\, and Meg\, there’s no escaping the truth.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Universe: A Deep Dive into the Wonders of the Night Sky with Ms. Galaxy
DESCRIPTION:Join Jessica Vineyard\, aka Ms. Galaxy\, as she takes you on a journey into the farthest reaches of the cosmos. Her engaging and entertaining presentations make astronomy fun\, entertaining\, and easy to understand. This is a don’t-miss opportunity! \nWe live in an extraordinary time with respect to exploration of the universe. The Hubble Space Telescope\, launched in 1990\, and the James Webb Telescope\, launched in 2021\, have expanded our view of the universe beyond all expectations. Utilizing the phenomenal images that these space telescopes have sent back to our home planet\, Ms. Galaxy will share her extensive knowledge of the stars and deep sky objects\, including globular clusters\, galaxies\, supernovas\, and more. \nJessica Vineyard\, “Ms. Galaxy” has found that most people are curious about and interested in the night sky and all its wondrous glories\, but very few have more than a passing understanding of the spectacular images taken by our space telescopes. The size and distance of these stunningly beautiful objects are beyond our human comprehension\, but we can certainly marvel at and appreciate our current understanding of how they came into being and what\, exactly\, we’re looking at. \nMs. Galaxy founded the Southern Oregon Skywatchers Astronomy Club in 1993 and was president for five years. She co-hosted The Milky Way Starlight Theater on JPR\, wrote astronomy articles for a local paper\, and has brought astronomy to the public through summer camps\, library talks\, OLLI classes\, homeschooling\, and more. She is available for private star parties (under the stars with a telescope). Her mission is to make astronomy fun\, entertaining\, and accessible to everyone. SUMMARY:Windows in Time: Out in the Valley: Southern Oregon LGBTQ+ Histories
DESCRIPTION:Using items from the SOHS Collection as a starting point\, Dr. Anna Sloan will explore expressions of LGBTQ+ life\, identity\, community\, and resilience in Southern Oregon over the past 150+ years. \nLearn how the western frontier made space for some settlers’ alternative gender and sexual identities while simultaneously erasing Indigenous expressions of the same. Explore how changing social mores of the early 20th century affected peoples’ lives and livelihoods. Hear more recent stories of local LGBTQ+ community-building\, meaning-making\, artistry\, and resilience\, even in the face of discrimination and violence. Additionally\, attendees will learn about new efforts at SOHS to integrate more of these stories into our collection — and why this task is as challenging as it is important. \nDr. Anna Sloan (she/her/hers) is the Curator of Collections for the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS)\, and a Research Archaeologist with the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology (SOULA). She is passionate about connecting communities with their histories through the objects that reflect our lived experiences — from the smallest of pottery sherds to the largest of wagon wheels. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays\, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays\, in-person). Recordings of Medford presentations are available on the JCLS Beyond YouTube channel.
