SUMMARY:Oregon Butterflies: What They Need to Thrive
DESCRIPTION:Join JCLS and the Jackson County Master Gardeners to learn about native butterflies and their habitats! This virtual presentation by Master Gardener Lynn Kunstman will share information about butterflies found in Oregon\, their native landscapes and food sources\, and how we can help them thrive. \nLynn Kunstman is a Master Gardener living in Medford\, Oregon. She has lived in the Rogue Valley since 1986. She holds a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management and a Master’s Degree of Science in Education. A retired middle school science and special education teacher\, Lynn’s students at Ashland Middle School established the school’s butterfly garden. Her first project upon retiring and moving from Ashland to Medford was to mulch out all the lawns on her property. Lynn’s entire front yard in Medford is now given over to wildlife\, planted with edible trees and shrubs\, as well as pollinator plants. The back yard is planted in fruit trees\, berries and vegetables\, for the humans. She is an enthusiastic advocate of gardens planted with wildlife\, pollinators\, and butterflies in mind.

SUMMARY:Lama Sundays – Calm Abiding Meditation
DESCRIPTION:This meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \n“From this practice\, we can experience a stable and calm mind. We learn to maintain and return to a sense of stillness\, no matter what our outer circumstances. The mind is relaxed\, alert and aware. The results of this practice are serenity\, freedom in the face of circumstances\, and ultimately Buddhahood.” From Meditation for Beginners\, by Bokar Rinpoche \nJoin in-person or via Zoom (hybrid). Please contact the office to receive our monthly emails and the Zoom link for this practice: OFFICE@KSCASHLAND.ORG \nHeld 9 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday\, Feb. 4\, March 10\, and April 7.

SUMMARY:What's at Stake
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon University’s Schneider Museum of Art (SMA) reopens at 5 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11\, 2024\, with a new exhibition\, “What’s at Stake.” \nCurated by Catharine Clark\, owner and founding director of Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco\, this exhibition will feature artists Zeina Barakeh\, Al Farrow\, and Masami Teraoka. This compelling exhibition explores the urgent issues of our time\, delving into the mechanisms of war and colonialism while interrogating the unpredictability and legitimacy of armed conflict. It will be on view through March 23\, 2024. \n“What’s at Stake” sheds light on the devastating impacts of war\, human rights violations\, and environmental collapse\, compelling viewers to pause and reflect on our collective responsibility to one another. The exhibition raises essential questions about the consequences when violence goes unchecked and challenges us to consider what is truly at stake in a world grappling with these pressing issues. \nSMA Executive Director Scott Malbaurn shared\, “During a recent trip to San Francisco with museum members\, we visited solo exhibitions at Catharine Clark Gallery featuring Masami Teraoka\, Al Farrow\, and Zeina Barakeh. Recognizing the common theme of exploring the impact of war\, especially for artists raised in wartime milieus like Teraoka and Barakeh alongside the sculpture of Al Farrow\, which are assembled with war time munitions\, we decided to present these shows collectively as “What’s at Stake.” This group exhibition becomes a poignant question and statement\, resonating with contemporary violent events that seem to be happening all of the time globally.” \nAn opening reception will take place 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11. Curator Catharine Clark and select artists will be in attendance. The opening reception is free and open to the public; complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres will be provided. The Museum will be closed on Saturday\, Jan. 13 for a private event. \nNew Masterworks on Loan and Highlights from the Permanent Collection will also be on view in the Entry Gallery. SUMMARY:Windows in Time: A Corset Won't Kill You: Demystifying the 19th Century Woman's Wardrobe
DESCRIPTION:From the underpinnings out\, this talk will explore the ways societal norms\, class differentials\, self-expression\, the Industrial Revolution\, and even the invention of the bicycle impacted the world of fashion. \nCassidy Hausmann-Mason has six years of historical tailoring experience and over a decade of antique collecting under her belt. Cassidy is excited to share her wealth of knowledge and help her audience look past the myths\, biases\, and preconceptions that so often color the discussions of the 19th century woman’s wardrobe. \nPrograms are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays\, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays\, in-person). Recordings of Medford presentations are available on the JCLS Beyond YouTube channel. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services.

SUMMARY:"Bridging Divides" Learning to Depolarize our Relationships with Marla Estes
DESCRIPTION:A Monthly Video and Discussion Series Facilitated by Marla Estes\, MA.\nHeld every Second Wednesday\, 7 PM at RVML.\nMarch 13 Topic: “Let Go of Certainty” \nA pre-requisite to bridging divides is being able to not be so certain about ~ and cling so tightly ~ to our perspectives. \n“Let go of certainty. The opposite isn’t uncertainty. It’s openness\, curiosity\, and a willingness to embrace paradox\, rather than choose up sides. The ultimate challenge is to accept ourselves exactly as we are\, but never stop trying to learn and grow.” – Tony Schwartz \nSeries Description: Are you feeling concerned about the growing divides occurring in our world? The first step\, and one that each one of us can do\, is to “depolarize within.” We do this by learning about our human “operating systems\,” becoming self-aware and then making different choices about how we behave. \nPolarization not only diminishes our capacity for true deliberative dialog and problem solving\, but it is dividing society into contentious\, conflicted parts. Left unchecked\, it is becoming a fundamental threat to social harmony and ultimately the core mechanisms of democratic society. \nJoin facilitator Marla Estes\, MA every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7 pm and learn how to “depolarize within.” Watch fascinating and insightful videos carefully selected to explore ways to depolarize and then engage in facilitated discussion to help integrate new perspectives. \nWith a background in Psychology\, Marla created Building Bridges in 2017 to address the growing social and political polarization in our country. \nFor over 15 years\, she has been giving presentations\, movie nights\, book groups\, workshops\, and classes helping people learn to develop insights and skills in approaching difficult conversations\, deepening and growing healthy\, functional\, and fulfilling relationships. \nMarla is currently the Jackson County Coordinator for Urban Rural Action which builds relationships through differences.

SUMMARY:9D Transformational Breathwork with Nikki Clifton
DESCRIPTION:Experience a new generation of breathwork — artfully engineered sound and breath journeys that catalyze life-changing transformational experiences. \n9D breathwork combines cutting edge audio technology with guided vocal coaching\, music\, subliminal suggestion\, frequencies and vibrations that sculpt your neurology. It uses timeless wisdom and modern inspiration with transformational breathwork for a powerful and paradigm-shifting journey into your nervous system that clears trauma and limiting beliefs\, and shifts anxiety\, depression and negative thoughts\, deeply restoring your body to optimum health at a cellular level and ushering in a deep feeling of peace and wellbeing. \nAs a former practicing acupuncturist\, Nikki Clifton is highly trained in the energy systems of the body. She discovered that although acupuncture is highly effective for many types of pain and other “dis-eases\,” transformational breathwork is one of the most effective and quickest ways to release blocked energy in the body which has been found to often be the root cause of pain and suffering of the body\, mind or spirit. This blocked energy is usually caused by unresolved trauma\, negative thoughts\, emotions and/or limiting beliefs. Many people discover that even one session of breathwork is as effective as many hours of talk therapy. Discover your authentic self\, increase your resilience\, ignite your sense of purpose\, renew your joy for living and tap into a deep well of energy and vitality. \nBreathwork as a treatment is most commonly sought out by people struggling with:\nTrauma and PTSD\nPatterns of self-sabotage\nChronic pain\nGrief and loss\nMoney blocks\nAddiction challenges\nRelationship struggles\nand more… \nSmall group 9D breathwork sessions are held every 2nd and 4th Thursdays at 7 p.m.\, at the Rogue Valley Metaphysical Library. Receive 50% off your first session with coupon code 9D50. Nikki is also available for private sessions for individuals or groups up to 12 people.
