SUMMARY:Newcomers’ Night & Calm Abiding Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Calm Abiding Meditation followed by a talk by the lamas and gathering. All are welcome! \nCalm Abiding meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \nAfter a guided meditation practice with our two lamas\, there will be a welcome and introduction to all the classes and offerings this winter and spring. This gathering is sometimes lovingly called “Newcomers’ Night” because it is a great way for new people to meet sangha members and to get the lay of the land at KSC. Simultaneously\, many long-time members also like to attend to celebrate the start of a new season of deep and rich learning

SUMMARY:What's at Stake
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon University’s Schneider Museum of Art (SMA) reopens at 5 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11\, 2024\, with a new exhibition\, “What’s at Stake.” \nCurated by Catharine Clark\, owner and founding director of Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco\, this exhibition will feature artists Zeina Barakeh\, Al Farrow\, and Masami Teraoka. This compelling exhibition explores the urgent issues of our time\, delving into the mechanisms of war and colonialism while interrogating the unpredictability and legitimacy of armed conflict. It will be on view through March 23\, 2024. \n“What’s at Stake” sheds light on the devastating impacts of war\, human rights violations\, and environmental collapse\, compelling viewers to pause and reflect on our collective responsibility to one another. The exhibition raises essential questions about the consequences when violence goes unchecked and challenges us to consider what is truly at stake in a world grappling with these pressing issues. \nSMA Executive Director Scott Malbaurn shared\, “During a recent trip to San Francisco with museum members\, we visited solo exhibitions at Catharine Clark Gallery featuring Masami Teraoka\, Al Farrow\, and Zeina Barakeh. Recognizing the common theme of exploring the impact of war\, especially for artists raised in wartime milieus like Teraoka and Barakeh alongside the sculpture of Al Farrow\, which are assembled with war time munitions\, we decided to present these shows collectively as “What’s at Stake.” This group exhibition becomes a poignant question and statement\, resonating with contemporary violent events that seem to be happening all of the time globally.” \nAn opening reception will take place 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11. Curator Catharine Clark and select artists will be in attendance. The opening reception is free and open to the public; complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres will be provided. The Museum will be closed on Saturday\, Jan. 13 for a private event. \nNew Masterworks on Loan and Highlights from the Permanent Collection will also be on view in the Entry Gallery. Museum hours will be Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is always free\, but a $5 donation is suggested. \nWhat:\nSchneider Museum of Art presents: “What’s at Stake \nFree\, and open to the public. SUMMARY:Belief\, Behavior\, and the Questions of Megan Phelps-Roper
DESCRIPTION:Most of us use our beliefs as proxies for truth\, but we don’t often consider the potential for those beliefs to take us down a ‘bad path.’ \nA vivid example of someone who discovered the bad path she was following is Megan Phelps-Roper\, who went from being a purveyor of hatred as a spokesperson for the Westboro Baptist Church to a kind\, insightful\, and empathetic interviewer on the podcast “The Witch Trials of JK Rowling.” She has summarized her transformation in the form of questions that all of us should be able to answer to justify our firmly held beliefs. Her questions include: Are you attacking ideas or attacking the people who hold them? Are you willing to cut off close relationships with people who disagree with you\, particularly over small points of contention? \nThe Jefferson Center invites members and guests to discuss these and related questions from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday\, Jan. 14 at The Jefferson Center\, in the Old Ashland Armory\, 208 Oak St.\, Ashland. \nWe’ll explore Megan Phelps-Roper’s questions as they apply to the hateful social media attacks advocating physical violence towards JK Rowling\, as an extreme example of a bad path. We will also apply them to the less harmful but nonetheless unexamined beliefs we might hold ourselves. We’ll consider the possibility that when we are convinced something is right\, this may not always set us on the most productive path in life. \nFacilitating the discussion is Tom Woosnam\, who has had a lifelong interest in the question of how we know that what we’re told is the truth really is the truth. In his 45 years of teaching high school physics and math before retiring in 2019\, he has had many opportunities to present that question to his students. \nThe program will be held in the Jefferson Center space\, suite 101\, in the Old Armory Building\, 208 Oak St.\, in Ashland. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. It is part of the Salon series of The Jefferson Center\, a Rogue Valley non-profit focused on critical thinking using secular humanist values to understand and engage with issues important to our community. See https://thejeffcenter.org for more details on this and other events.

SUMMARY:Mars Mediocrity and Fermi's Paradox: A Case for an Inhabited Universe by Dr. John E. Brandenburg
DESCRIPTION:Dr. John E. Brandenburg will speak on the discovery of both a dead humanoid civilization and a past massive thermonuclear holocaust on Mars. Mars was once much like Earth in climatic conditions\, with a northern paleo-ocean\, and based on its red color\, like Earth’s deserts viewed from space\, with an oxygen rich atmosphere. The discovery of a dead past civilization\, based on strong evidence of eroded archeology found at several sites in NASA images\, will be discussed as will its demise. \nThe meaning of this discovery for the human place in the universe will also be discussed in the context of “Mediocrity” the concept that Earth \, its Biosphere\, and Humanity itself are unremarkable in the universe. It will also be pointed out that this makes Fermi’s Paradox \, the seeming silence in the universe\, when we would expect it to be noisy with radio broadcasts from kindred civilizations\, even more acute. The importance of these discoveries in the context of the current UAP/UFO controversy will also be explored. \nDr. Brandenburg\, PhD\, is a theoretical plasma physicist who was born in Rochester\, Minnesota\, and grew up in Medford\, Oregon. He presently lives in Midland\, Texas. \nHe is the originator of the GEM unification theory\, unifying Gravity and EM which he hopes will lead to advanced space propulsion and which predicts the value of the Newton Gravitation constant “G” to unrivaled accuracy. He is the inventor and developer of the MET (Microwave Electro-Thermal) thruster using water propellant\, now flying successfully in space. \nHe is also the discoverer of the Paleo-Ocean of Mars. He obtained his BA in Physics\, with a Mathematics minor\, from Southern Oregon University in 1975 and obtained his MS in 1977 and PhD in Plasma Physics\, both from University of California at Davis in 1981\, with a working fellowship at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories. \nHis first professional position was at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque working on controlled fusion and directed energy weapons. He was working at Kepler Aerospace LDT in Midland Texas as Chief Scientist of the Astronautics Division on the subjects of Advanced Space propulsion and Fusion Energy. He is now an independent space/physics consultant. Before this he was a consultant at Cal State Fullerton on Advanced Space Propulsion. Before that he was a consultant at Morningstar Applied Physics LLC and a part-time instructor of Astronomy\, Physics and Mathematics at Madison College and other learning institutions in Madison Wisconsin. \nBefore this\, he worked at Orbital Technologies in Madison Wisconsin\, as Senior Propulsion Scientist\, working on space plasma technologies\, nuclear fusion\, and advanced space propulsion. He is the principle inventor of the MET (Microwave Electro-Thermal) plasma thruster using water propellant for space propulsion. He has previously worked on SDI\, the Clementine Mission to the Moon\, Rocket Plume-Regolith Interactions on the Moon and Mars\, Vortex theory of Rocket engine design\, and the GEM unification theory\, which is a combined Sakharov-Kaluza-Klein theory of Field Unification for purposes of space propulsion and Mars science. He is a lifetime member of the AIAA. He also performed an architecture study for a Human Mars Mission using solar electric propulsion. Before coming to ORBITEC he was teaching and performing research at the Florida Space Institute of the University of Central Florida\, at Aerospace Corporation in Chantilly Va.\, and earlier at Research Support Instruments (RSI) in Lanham Maryland. During the Reagan years he worked at Mission Research Corporation and Sandia National Laboratories on SDI and plasmas for controlled fusion and directed energy weapons. \nHe has authored the popular science books “Death on Mars” (2014)\, “Life and Death on Mars” (2010)\, “Beyond Einstein’s Unified Field” (2011)\, and “Dead Mars\, Dying Earth” (1999) with Monica Rix Paxson\, which won the Ben Franklin Silver Medal award for best Science/Environmental book in 2001.He has written two science fiction novels under the pen name “Victor Norgarde”: “Morningstar Pass\, The collapse of the UFO Coverup” and “Asteroid 20-2012 Sepulveda” He is the recipient of the William Gerald Award in 2006 from the Harlem Children Society for his work with underprivileged students\, and the 2012 Devi Bhargava Award at Madison College for working with students with disabilities. \nFREE ADMISSION – 1757 Ashland St.\, Ashland\, OR.
