SUMMARY:Windows in Time: Railroading in Southern Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Railroads have played a pivotal role in the history and development of Southern Oregon. Robert Hirning will examine how the construction of our own Siskiyou Line influenced the present-day economies of Jackson and Josephine Counties. \nJoin us for a discussion on the rise of “Robber Barons\,” inept train robbers\, and the failed attempts to reach the California Coast that kept our region uniquely isolated. \nRobert Hirning has been a lifelong “railfan” and has chased his passion for trains since childhood. Robert has traveled widely by train over most of North America\, from the arctic to the tropics\, and across Asia from the Sea of Japan to the Baltic. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays\, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays\, in-person). DESCRIPTION:To bridge divides\, we need to understand how our mental operating systems automatically create biases\, blind spots\, and shortcuts — all of which stop us from seeing things clearly. \n“Confirmation bias is seeing what we expect to see. Desirability bias is seeing what we want to see.” — Adam Grant \nAre you feeling concerned about the growing divides occurring in our world? The first step\, and one that each one of us can do\, is to “depolarize within.” We do this by learning about our human “operating systems\,” becoming self-aware and then making different choices about how we behave. \nPolarization not only diminishes our capacity for true deliberative dialog and problem solving\, but it is dividing society into contentious\, conflicted parts. Join JCLS and the Jackson County Master Gardeners for this virtual presentation to learn how to to identify some of the bad bugs and good guys in your garden\, as well as how to cultivate a thriving garden ecosystem. \nGrace Florjancic is the Master Gardener Coordinator at the Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center (SOREC). She has a background in microbiology and horticulture from Virginia Tech. Grace has experience working in botanic gardens and research in greenhouses\, but now focuses on education outreach in our Jackson and Josephine counties.

SUMMARY:Benefit Concert to Support Our Homeless Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:Since 2018\, Havurah Shir Hadash\, 185 N. Mountain\,Ashland\, has given homeless families the opportunity to park overnight in its parking lot. To cover the expenses in offering this service\, there is a benefit concert on Saturday\, April 13\, 7-9pm. \nPerformers include ANAN Gaelic Choir under the direction of Pat O’Scannel\, singer/songwriter Gene Burnett and folk singer Daniel Jokelson. Cost is a $20 donation at the door. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase. \nThe ANAM Gaelic Choir was founded in December 2022 by Pat O’Scannell\, director of MUSICA MATRIX. The vocal ensemble presents songs in Irish Gaelic learned by ear from director O’Scannell\, who has sung for over 30 years in the Irish language. Her efforts are both in preserving Irish culture through its language and music\, and also to honor her own heritage and grandfather\, who came from Tralee in County Kerry\, Ireland. \nANAM will sing a variety of traditional Irish songs in what is referred to as ‘sean nos’ style\, which\, simply stated\, means traditional. The songs are sung unaccompanied\, or to a drone. Other instruments such as the shruti box\, whistle\, guitar and bodhran will be included. The songs speak of rural Irish origins with herding songs\, spinning songs\, shearing songs\, love songs and songs mourning the passing of life. The single line melodies are lyrical and poignant\, with rich nuance of ornamentation and the subtle bending of tone and inflection giving it its identifiable sound. \nBurnett\, who calls himself “an acoustic troubadour singing heartfelt songs for thinking people\,” has written over 800 songs. DESCRIPTION:Weekly: A weekly Men’s Circle Fire Ceremony on Monday nights from 6:30-8:30 pm around the fire at the Island Fire Pit in scenic Lithia Park in Ashland\, Oregon. \nWhat could be more natural than gathering around the fire and talking about the challenges of being a man and/or assuming masculine roles in our current culture? \nCeremony: This Men’s Circle is conducted as a shamanic ceremony to establish connection and community. It is compatible with any religious and spiritual beliefs. We offer intentions\, smudge with sage\, and release things into the fire. A weekly theme such as “confidence” or “purpose” is introduced. \nTalking Stick and Fire Ceremony: A talking stick is passed to speak your truth on this topic and things coming up in your life. The Men’s Circle will be conducted as a fire ceremony as long as we are allowed to build fires this year. After this time\, a new form of ceremony will be considered to continue the Men’s Circle. \nInclusive: This ceremony is for anyone looking to awaken and integrate dynamic masculine energy and roles. This includes all gender identities and sexual orientations. \nDrug and alcohol-free: This form of ceremony does not utilize plant medicine or psychedelics. Please do not be under the influence of any drugs or alcohol during this ceremony. \nAge: This ceremony is for ages 18 and older. \nFacilitator: This ceremony is conducted by Michael Hoffman\, LCSW. He is a licensed psychotherapist and spiritual coach. He trained with a spiritual teacher/shaman for 22 years and offered psychotherapy and relationship counseling for the past 28 years.
