SUMMARY:Windows in Time: Medford and Ashland’s Historic Theaters: “It all Began with the ‘IT’”
DESCRIPTION:As the towns Ashland and Medford grew in the 1880’s\, residents sought a place to gather for musical\, dramatic\, educational\, and social entertainments. Join us to hear the stories and histories of these “public amusement” spaces like the Rialto\, the still-standing Craterian and Holly\, and the forgotten ones like the Ugo\, the Isis\, the Liberty and the Savoy. \nRon Kramer was the executive director of Jefferson Public Radio from 1974 to 2012 and since 2021\, he has served as the Southern Oregon Historical Society’s Executive Director. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays\, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays\, in-person). Recordings of Medford presentations are available on the JCLS Beyond YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Bridging Divides Video & Discussion Series: Learning to Depolarize our Relationships with Marla Estes M.A.
DESCRIPTION:January’s topic: A prerequisite to bridging divides is being able to not be so certain about\, and cling so tightly\, to our perspectives. \n“Let go of certainty. The opposite isn’t uncertainty. It’s openness\, curiosity and a willingness to embrace paradox\, rather than choose up sides.” \nAre you feeling concerned about the growing divides occurring in our world? \nThe first step\, and one that each one of us can do\, is to “depolarize within.” We do this by learning about our human “operating systems\,” becoming self-aware and then making different choices about how we behave. \nPolarization not only diminishes our capacity for true deliberative dialog and problem solving\, but it is dividing society into contentious\, conflicted parts. Left unchecked\, it is becoming a fundamental threat to social harmony and ultimately the core mechanisms of democratic society. \nJoin facilitator Marla Estes\, MA every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. and learn how to “depolarize within.” Watch fascinating and insightful videos carefully selected to explore ways to depolarize and then engage in facilitated discussion to help integrate new perspectives. \nWith a background in Psychology\, Marla created Building Bridgers in 2017 to address the growing social and political polarization in our country. \nFor over 15 years\, she has been giving presentations\, movie nights\, book groups\, workshops\, and classes helping people learn to develop insights and skills in approaching difficult conversations\, deepening and growing healthy\, functional\, and fulfilling relationships. \nMarla is currently the Jackson County Coordinator for Urban Rural Action which builds relationships through differences. \nPresenter’s Website: https://www.BuildingBridgers.com

SUMMARY:Newcomers’ Night & Calm Abiding Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Calm Abiding Meditation followed by a talk by the lamas and gathering. All are welcome! \nCalm Abiding meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \nAfter a guided meditation practice with our two lamas\, there will be a welcome and introduction to all the classes and offerings this winter and spring. This gathering is sometimes lovingly called “Newcomers’ Night” because it is a great way for new people to meet sangha members and to get the lay of the land at KSC. Simultaneously\, many long-time members also like to attend to celebrate the start of a new season of deep and rich learning

SUMMARY:What's at Stake
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon University’s Schneider Museum of Art (SMA) reopens at 5 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11\, 2024\, with a new exhibition\, “What’s at Stake.” \nCurated by Catharine Clark\, owner and founding director of Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco\, this exhibition will feature artists Zeina Barakeh\, Al Farrow\, and Masami Teraoka. This compelling exhibition explores the urgent issues of our time\, delving into the mechanisms of war and colonialism while interrogating the unpredictability and legitimacy of armed conflict. It will be on view through March 23\, 2024. \n“What’s at Stake” sheds light on the devastating impacts of war\, human rights violations\, and environmental collapse\, compelling viewers to pause and reflect on our collective responsibility to one another. The exhibition raises essential questions about the consequences when violence goes unchecked and challenges us to consider what is truly at stake in a world grappling with these pressing issues. \nSMA Executive Director Scott Malbaurn shared\, “During a recent trip to San Francisco with museum members\, we visited solo exhibitions at Catharine Clark Gallery featuring Masami Teraoka\, Al Farrow\, and Zeina Barakeh. Recognizing the common theme of exploring the impact of war\, especially for artists raised in wartime milieus like Teraoka and Barakeh alongside the sculpture of Al Farrow\, which are assembled with war time munitions\, we decided to present these shows collectively as “What’s at Stake.” This group exhibition becomes a poignant question and statement\, resonating with contemporary violent events that seem to be happening all of the time globally.” \nAn opening reception will take place 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11. Curator Catharine Clark and select artists will be in attendance. The opening reception is free and open to the public; complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres will be provided. The Museum will be closed on Saturday\, Jan. 13 for a private event. \nNew Masterworks on Loan and Highlights from the Permanent Collection will also be on view in the Entry Gallery. Museum hours will be Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is always free\, but a $5 donation is suggested. \nWhat:\nSchneider Museum of Art presents: “What’s at Stake \nFree\, and open to the public. SUMMARY:Belief\, Behavior\, and the Questions of Megan Phelps-Roper
DESCRIPTION:Most of us use our beliefs as proxies for truth\, but we don’t often consider the potential for those beliefs to take us down a ‘bad path.’ \nA vivid example of someone who discovered the bad path she was following is Megan Phelps-Roper\, who went from being a purveyor of hatred as a spokesperson for the Westboro Baptist Church to a kind\, insightful\, and empathetic interviewer on the podcast “The Witch Trials of JK Rowling.” She has summarized her transformation in the form of questions that all of us should be able to answer to justify our firmly held beliefs. Her questions include: Are you attacking ideas or attacking the people who hold them? Are you willing to cut off close relationships with people who disagree with you\, particularly over small points of contention? \nThe Jefferson Center invites members and guests to discuss these and related questions from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday\, Jan. 14 at The Jefferson Center\, in the Old Ashland Armory\, 208 Oak St.\, Ashland. \nWe’ll explore Megan Phelps-Roper’s questions as they apply to the hateful social media attacks advocating physical violence towards JK Rowling\, as an extreme example of a bad path. We will also apply them to the less harmful but nonetheless unexamined beliefs we might hold ourselves. We’ll consider the possibility that when we are convinced something is right\, this may not always set us on the most productive path in life. \nFacilitating the discussion is Tom Woosnam\, who has had a lifelong interest in the question of how we know that what we’re told is the truth really is the truth. In his 45 years of teaching high school physics and math before retiring in 2019\, he has had many opportunities to present that question to his students. \nThe program will be held in the Jefferson Center space\, suite 101\, in the Old Armory Building\, 208 Oak St.\, in Ashland. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. It is part of the Salon series of The Jefferson Center\, a Rogue Valley non-profit focused on critical thinking using secular humanist values to understand and engage with issues important to our community.
