How much should colleges cater to job requirements\, the pursuit of bigger salaries\, and garnering credentials? Should higher education aim to lead students toward the best in human achievement and creativity? Is it all wasted on the young\, or is the cost simply too high? \nThe Jefferson Center invites members and guests to discuss these and related themes from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday\, Nov. 12 at The Jefferson Center\, in the Historic Ashland Armory\, 208 Oak St.\, Ashland. \nThe discussion will be facilitated by Joseph Graf\, Jefferson Center Board member and former Dean of Sciences at Southern Oregon University. Serving as resources to aid our discussion of these broad topics will be Charles Lane and Steve Thorpe\, former faculty members and administrators at a number of private and public institutions in Oregon\, Texas\, Hawaii and California. \nLight refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. It is part of the Salon series of The Jefferson Center\, a Rogue Valley nonprofit focused on critical thinking using secular humanist values to understand and engage with issues important to our community.

Mary’s benevolent skills have now cast her and her young brother under suspicion of witchery. Soon\, the husband of one of Mary’s patients is found murdered. For Hopkins\, it’s further evidence of dark arts. When the whispering village turns against her\, Mary dares to trust a stranger: an enigmatic alchemist\, scarred body and soul\, who knows the dead man’s secrets. \nAuthor Jennifer Sherman Roberts holds a PhD in Renaissance literature from the University of Minnesota. She became interested in early modern recipes and recipe books as she researched the medicinal properties of folk cures. She has written about early modern recipes on the academic blog The Recipes Project\, and she has worked with Oregon Humanities facilitating conversation projects about the historical roots and cultural implications of the recipe genre. SUMMARY:Barry Kraft Explores the First Folio
DESCRIPTION:Barry Kraft explores the First Folio of William Shakespeare’s plays—the first collected edition published in 1623\, 7½ years after Shakespeare’s death. \nFolio editions were large and expensive books that were seen as prestige items. Shakespeare had a hand in writing about 40 plays\, 36 of which are contained in the First Folio. This talk is part of Ashland Library’s celebration of the 400th anniversary of the First Folio’s publication. \nBarry Kraft has been an actor and lecturer at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for 31 seasons\, including dramaturging nearly 60 productions. Other acting credits include Colorado and Utah Shakespeare Festivals\, Old Globe at San Diego\, Berkeley Shakespeare Festival\, San Jose Repertory Theatre\, Shakespeare Santa Cruz\, A Contemporary Theater in Seattle\, American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco\, and Marin Shakespeare Company\, among others. He has acted in 88 full productions of 38 of Shakespeare’s plays\, more than 100 roles. Barry has written After Dinner Shakespeare and Shakespeare Insult Generator. He has recorded several books on tape\, including Ovid’s Metamorphoses.

What technological issues regarding our generation\, distribution\, storage\, and conservation of electrical power must we prioritize at this moment? \nTechnological pioneers Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla have given us prosperity in the past with their numerous innovations\, inventions\, and patents over many decades\, from 1870 to 1940. \nLooking forward\, what innovative opportunities does the 21st century hold? How will we meet the world’s increasing need for efficient\, low carbon energy generation and distribution? \nWill Elon Musk with his enterprises help give us a secure future? Or should we put more trust in the corporate media and our elected administrators? \nDrawing from his experience and expertise as a Master Electrician and the inventor of an electric car in 1970\, Jerry Paschen will share his thought-provoking insights and ideas about quintessential questions that concern us all. Born in Berlin in 1938 and immigrating to Canada when he was 19\, Paschen has been fascinated with all matters electrical since he was a teenager\, earning his Master Electrician license in 1966. \nActive in public service while in Canada\, Jerry served on the Board of the Archaeological Society for 16 years\, and on the Provincial Government Environmental Board’s “Environmental Council” for 20 years\, proposing resolutions to the Minister of the Environment. He ran at least 16 times for civic\, provincial\, and federal elections for the Green Party\, and in 1982 was almost elected into the Cabinet. \nJerry and his wife Betty have been community members of Ashland\, Oregon for over 40 years. They bought a city lot in Ashland in 1982\, built a house and returned every winter thereafter as snowbirds. In 2003 Jerry and Betty raised $1.2 million among 60 share-holders and erected an industrial wind turbine. He and his son Syd installed numerous photovoltaic installations in Alberta\, including at the Cold Lake Airport and on Native reservations\, both on and off-grid. DESCRIPTION:“Canopy of Titans: The Life and Times of the Great North American Temperate Rainforest\,” by Paul Koberstein in conversation with Dr. Dominick A. DellaSala\, chief scientist at Wild Heritage. \nCanopy of Titans examines the global importance of the Pacific Coastal Temperate Rainforest that stretches from Northern California to Alaska. It catalogs the threats to this vital environmental resource\, and it provides readers with easy-to-grasp insights into the value of forests as climate mitigation. The story starts with the wildfires that raged across the American West in the summer of 2020 and ends at the UN Climate Change Conference in November 2021\, with many historical flashbacks along the way. The authors pull back the curtain on governmental policies that have seriously diminished the rainforest’s capacity to store carbon\, and they uncover industry practices that have led to the destruction of this major ecological resource. Through the lens of environmental justice\, the book also shines a light on the indigenous communities that have lived in the rainforest for millennia\, and the impact forest policies have had on their lives. \nPaul Koberstein co-founded Cascadia Times in 1995 and has been its editor ever since. A journalist for 40 years\, Paul was a staff writer for the Oregonian and Willamette Week in the 1980s and 1990s. In 2004\, Paul won the John B. Oakes Award\, given annually by Columbia University for the most distinguished environmental journalism in the United States\, and in 2016\, the Bruce Baer Award\, given annually to an Oregon journalist for excellence in investigative journalism. \nDr. Dominick A. DellaSala is chief scientist at Wild Heritage and former president of the Society for Conservation Biology\, North America Section. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to sing for fun? Have you ever wanted to discover your singing voice? Rehearse with us for Rogue World Wassailing this Dec. 1 and 16! \nRehearsals are held 2 to 4 p.m. Saturdays\, Oct. 28 to Nov. 25\, at Aryze Hot Yoga Studio\, 330 Oak St.\, Ashland. \nRuth Hoffecker\, of Ashland School of Uncovering the Voice\, brings her two major passions together for this project: traditional folk songs that celebrate the turning of the seasons and creating a singing community where all people feel welcome. Folk traditions like Wassailing were born out of a time when all people sang as part of daily life. We invite you to come experience singing in community\, lifting each other up with our voices\, making a joyful noise! \nWe will meet for five weeks to learn winter\, Christmas\, New Year’s and traditional Wassailing songs. Each session will begin with gentle exercises to warm up our voices.\nWith music in our hearts and rhythms in our feet\, we will serenade the community\, first in two public street events\, and later going door to door offering blessings of health and happiness for the New Year. \nAll singing experience levels are welcome – including folks who have always thought ‘I can’t sing.’ \nAll ages are welcome. All voices are welcome. Participation levels of all types are welcome. (Singing everything\, singing just the choruses\, clapping along\, humming\, etc.) \nYou don’t have to attend every rehearsal. Attend as many or as few as you’d like. \nParticipation is free.
