SUMMARY:Electrify Ashland Now! meetup
DESCRIPTION:You know the shift is on from gas-powered to electric cars. Have you also heard about the equally important shift to 100% electric homes? \nCome join us for an informal discussion about going 100% electric for your home energy needs — heating/cooling\, water heating\, and cooking. Electrify Ashland Now! (EAN) is a group Ashland volunteers who have come together to provide resources\, tips\, and info to help you plan your journey to all-electric for improved health\, comfort\, lower utility costs\, and dramatically reduced greenhouse gas emissions. \nPlease RSVP to lorrie@ashlandclimate.org. It’s not required but helps us plan for you!

SUMMARY:Orchid Child a talk with author Victoria Costello
DESCRIPTION:Ashland resident Victoria Costello invites local readers to celebrate the publication of her debut novel\, “Orchid Child\,” which blends history\, science\, mystery\, and magic to tell a three-generation story based\, in part\, on the author’s Irish-American family. In its review\, WritersnAuthors.com called “Orchid Child” “captivating\,” and went on to say\, “Victoria Costello expertly navigates through the depth and complexity of psychological resilience\, neurodiversity and ancient Celtic wisdom to create a story that is both gripping and thought-provoking.” \nAt Bloomsbury Books\, the author will discuss some fascinating discoveries she made while researching her book\, including: the science of intergenerational trauma and neurodiversity; aspects of Celtic folklore still influencing Irish culture\, including stone circles\, fairies and second sight; and little-known history of America’s role in The Troubles\, going back 100 years. \nVictoria Costello is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker\, a teacher of life writing at the Osher Lifelong Learning Insitute and Southern Oregon University and WritingWorkshops.com\, and the author of a memoir\, “A Lethal Inheritance” (Prometheus Books/2012). Her science and parenting articles have appeared in Scientific American Mind\, Huffington Post and Psychology Today. Find out about her work at www.victoriacostelloauthor.com.

SUMMARY:Hanna Somatic Education and the Myth of Aging by Victor Novick
DESCRIPTION:FREE ADMISSION – 1757 Ashland St.\, Ashland \nHanna Somatic Education is a system of what we might call “directed self-healing.” The work includes hands-on sessions and patterns of exercise. In both of these practices\, the emphasis is on the inner experience of the person and their awareness of the proprioceptive sense. \nThe primary focus is on alleviating conditions in the body caused by chronically contracted muscles. Once these become habitual\, they are no longer within the realm of the person’s control. They can neither be relaxed nor asked to participate in movement\, as that can create serious problems in the body. Joints may pull out of natural alignment which\, in turn\, pulls nerves out of their proper place. This distorts the integrated function of the muscle systems and can lead to painful conditions like sciatica and other inflammatory conditions. \nHanna Somatic work is designed to restore the brain’s lost connection to these muscles. In this presentation\, the audience will be invited to experience a movement sequence while seated in their chairs with the intention that this will provide a more profound understanding of this work than words can convey. \nVictor Novick graduated in 2014 from a 3-year training course in Hanna Somatic Education. The primary focus of the training was a hands-on type of practice in which the client’s own conscious experience of the workings of their bodies is the primary healing factor. In reality\, Hanna Somatic Education is more of an invitation to self-healing\, rather than a mode of therapy.\nVictor practiced hands-on work with a variety of clients\, and slowly it became clear that his best offering would be to teach classes where people could learn their own self-directed movements. After that insight\, he taught somatic healing classes at OLLI for 6 years and private classes for 3 years. \nIn addition to his fascination with somatic healing\, Victor was enchanted by the slow grace of Tai Chi movement some 45 years ago. He has been engaged in virtually a daily practice ever since. He taught large classes at OLLI for six years\, and small private classes for four years. \nView full events calendar: https://rvml.org/events

SUMMARY:Courageous Conversations about Religion\, Sex & Love with Joanie Lindenmeyer
DESCRIPTION:What happens when two women commit to serving the Catholic Church as nuns-Brides of Christ\, taking vows of chastity-but fall passionately in love? They must defy the Church’s rules against same-sex relationships and blaze a bold trail for a joyous\, adventurous life together- at a time when LGBTQ people could be killed for being gay and same-sex marriage was decades in the future. \n“Carol and I had great trust and faith in ourselves and in our higher power to confront\, tackle\, and live a life of prayer\, hope\, and joy. Love always wins! I’ll share our positive outlook for humanity. I will talk about being gay\, keeping it secret\, coming out\, and how all of that wrapped around our Catholicism as nuns and as believers. We eventually married\, officiated as a sacrament from an Episcopal priest. There is enormous beauty inside each of you. Let it shine! Be a lamp on a table — not hidden under a basket! Prayers\, hugs\, and love.” — Joanie \nJoanie Lindenmeyer is the co-author of “Nun Better: An AMAZING Love Story.” She’s a former Catholic nun and retired teacher and coach who enjoys playing and watching sports\, traveling\, fishing\, gardening\, playing guitar\, listening to music\, hiking and walking\, baking treats\, and hanging out with family and friends. \nFilled with joy and hope\, she believes Jesus is her best friend. In 1982\, she met Carol Tierheimer and they married on August 5\, 2020. Raised in San Diego\, California\, she taught physical education and health in public high school for 25 years\, after teaching religion and P.E. for four years in Catholic elementary schools. \nShe coached boys and girls sports teams for 20 years. Joanie worked at two nonprofits and a county department of health in areas of community health\, addictions\, teen pregnancy\, sexuality\, child abuse prevention\, HIV/AIDS prevention\, STI testing and counseling\, and wellness. A San Diego State University graduate\, she was a member of the university volleyball team and has a California teaching credential. \nShe was a Catholic Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet\, ministering in many ways. Her dedication shines to people of all ages\, making their lives brighter\, happier and healthier. She was committed to her one and only\, lifetime lover and spouse of 40 years and is a recent widow. Joanie and Carol Tierheimer began writing “Nun Better: An AMAZING Love Story” together in the Brookings\, Oregon home they shared for 31 years. \nView full events calendar: https://rvml.org/events.
