SUMMARY:ART ON FIRST: An Artful Life\, Solo Exhibition John Palombo
DESCRIPTION:Currently featured at ART on FIRST are nature inspired paintings by John Palombo. With just enough challenges growing up to gain some deep colors and spectrums in his life\, John has made use of the follies and torture of being human and turned them into joy and happiness by finding something that truly speaks to his soul – visiting remote natural areas and painting. \nJohn loves color and creating color. His focus has always been on landscapes of Southern Oregon\, particularly Southeastern Oregon. When creating a composition\, John’s interest is to translate the magic that he sees in the world and in nature onto his surface. With this\, he hopes to inspire his viewers to find the same magic\, or something that is personal to just them. \nFor more information\, please visit www.artonfirstashland.com. \nMonday\, March 31 – Monday\, April 28\, 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. \nOpening Reception: Friday\, April 4\, 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Three short films about resistance
DESCRIPTION:Producer/Director Walter Haussner is presenting three films about resistance at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday\, April 11 and 12\, 2025.\n\nThe venue is Gypsy Road Studio\, 369 E. Main St.\, Ashland\, Oregon.\n\n“Dulce et Decorum Est” (5 minutes)\, a dramatization of Wilfred Owen’s classic World War I poem starring Steven Oliver\, starts the evening out. Elizabeth Owen\, niece of the poet and president of The Wilfred Owen Association\, said this about Oliver’s performance:  “What a wonderful rendering of Dulce. I think that it is the best I have ever heard. I feel that Steven must have experienced dreadful things.  I hope I am wrong and that he is just an amazing actor. The way it comes from him is from his heart and soul. He is not just reciting it”.\n\nThe evening’s next film\, also starring Steven Oliver\, is “The Partisan” (4 minutes)\, a dramatization of an anti-fascist anthem about the French Resistance in World War II. The song was composed in 1943 by Russian-born Anna Marly\, with lyrics by French Resistance leader Emmanuel d’Astier de La Vigerie. Hy Zaret later adapted it for English and it is this version that was popularized by singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen.\n\nThe evening concludes with a screening of “Xpendable” (30 minutes)\, which takes the evening’s theme into the realm of Film Noir. Inspired by Evan Hunter’s (The Birds\, High and Low) early short story “The Last Spin\,” “Xpendable” tells the story of a dispute between two crime organizations and the decision to settle matters with a representative from each “club”. Whereas the original story dealt with juvenile males from rival gangs\, “Xpendable” shifts the focus to age and gender\, along with a dose of dark humor. Featuring actors Preston Mead\, Annette MacGregor\, Adam Lewis\, Jeffrey Hunter\, and Johnny Whelchel\, “Xpendable” is the director’s love letter to Film Noir and David Mamet’s view that “Old age and treachery will always beat youth and exuberance”.\n\nThe three films have been featured in over 75 festivals worldwide and have won over 25 awards. Walter Haussner will introduce the films and will be available for questions and answers.\n\nAdmission is free.

SUMMARY:Palm Sunday Services at Trinity Episcopal Church
DESCRIPTION:The Palm Sunday 8 am early service begins outside the door of the church. \n(There is also 10 am service that begins on the Trinity Labyrinth at the corner of 2nd Street and Lithia Way.) We hear the story of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and bless palm fronds to carry in procession. Upon entering the church\, the focus of the service shifts to the Passion story\, which we present in a dramatic reading. But because this is a Sunday\, we place the remembrance of Christ’s suffering and death in the larger context of God’s mighty acts of love\, concluding the service with the celebration of Holy Communion. It is traditional to keep the palm fronds from this day until Shrove Tuesday the following year\, when they are burned for the imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday. Some will choose to fold their fronds into palm crosses\, and instruction for those who need it will be available in the Parish Hall after church. \nThe services of the Holy Week form a single great liturgy. Their meaning and power is cumulative\, bringing participants deep into contemplation of the mystery of Christ’s passion and resurrection. That said\, even if it only possible to attend one of these services\, each highlights a particular aspect of the great Christian drama of redemption. For more information\, see https://www.trinitychurchashland.org/ or https://www.facebook.com/TrinityAshland.

SUMMARY:Ali Davidson talks about her book – It’s Between You and Me: For Adult Children and their Senior Parents
DESCRIPTION:No one wants to get old…but we’ve all got to do it. What if there was a way to use the aging process as a catalyst for bringing your family closer together\, to heal old wounds\, and discover new things about each other? What if there were a way to infuse the aging process with cooperation\, empowerment\, and appreciation. \nWorking with seniors and their families for ten years led the author to write this book to help people avoid the struggles she witnessed when we age without a plan. If you have ever thought about your own aging and asked yourself “what will I do when?” Then It’s Between You and Me will help answer those questions. \nThis book will take both the senior and the adult child on a rich and meaningful journey to the conversation that everyone wants to have but few are able to request. This will lead to harmony\, greater respect\, and clear expectations of each other’s desire. \nThis book is a manual taking you through a series of questions that enable you to create a plan for the aging years so that no crisis catches you off guard. It ensures that you remain independent throughout your life because you are in charge and making decisions that others can implement with peace of mind. Filled with information\, stories\, and guidance for creating your plan\, this book is a must for anyone over 50

DESCRIPTION:Women experiencing trauma from breast cancer\, COVID and wildfire (or other sources) can now register for free 4-week small group gatherings on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons at Riding Beyond in April and May.\n\nNo horse experience is required. Instead of riding\, sessions involve small group activities with remarkably interactive horses who provide insight and fresh approaches to the future.\n\nTypical reports from participants state: “Every layered detail is designed to empower us to connect safely\, heart to heart\, with these enormous\, magnificent beings\, for a positive\, life-changing program. The sessions are educational\, deep\, fun\, and exhilarating. Poems\, stories\, sharing within the circle\, all weave through each session\, making it a holistic healing experience. Horses have woven their way into my sleeptime dreams as well! Please accept this offering. You will be delighted.”\n\nApril 4-week sessions begin on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons\, April 16 or 17\, 1-4 pm.\nMay 4-week sessions begin on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons\, May 20 or 21\, 1-4 pm.\n\nSee ridingbeyond.org for details\, including the award-winning video by Robin Miller\, MD\, on the home page. Call 541-482-6210 for registration information.\n\nRiding Beyond has served breast cancer survivors and thrivers in the Rogue Valley since 2013 with their equine assisted services in human development. Located in Ashland\, their mission is to open doors to the future with trauma recovery from breast cancer treatment\, and since 2021\, from other life challenges\, such as COVID and wildfire trauma.  The founder and director of the program\, Trish Broersma\, is certified with the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl) as a therapeutic riding instructor and as an equine specialist in mental health and learning. Licensed mental health counselors and certified equine specialists assist in designing and conducting programs\, along with a large volunteer crew and five specially-trained and talented horses (plus one donkey)\, all of whom endeavor to explore and share the remarkable benefits of the horse/human relationship.
