SUMMARY:Rainbow Girls presented by the Ashland Folk Collective
DESCRIPTION:In a world where the line between the living and the dead blurs… \nThis fall\, prepare yourself for a Rainbow Girls show like no other. As the lights dim\, and the fog rolls in\, you’ll step into a realm where shadows dance\, and whispers echo through the night. Welcome to the “Haunting” album release tour—a spine-tingling journey into the unknown. Feel the chill as each note reverberates through the darkness\, see the spectral visions come to life on stage\, and as the music swells\, you’ll find yourself drawn deeper into the abyss. But beware—once you enter\, you may never leave. This isn’t just a show… it’s a journey into the unknown\, where every song beckons you deeper into the shadows. \nKing Dream \nKing Dream is a Bay Area rock ‘n’ roll band helmed by Oakland native Jeremy Lyon\, a lifelong songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who crafts dive bar anthems with heart\, brains and soul. Hard-rocking yet poignant\, his music combines a love for American rock masters like Springsteen and Petty with ‘60s West Coast psychedelia and more contemporary torch-bearers like My Morning Jacket and The War on Drugs — all brought to life by a band of Northern California’s most in-demand players.

Orphic means “beyond ordinary\,” a phrase that characterizes the ensemble and its mission: to commission and premiere new works by today’s most compelling composers; to broaden the audience for contemporary music; and to present concerts that are vibrantly communicative\, musically expressive\, and inspiringly virtuosic—or\, quite simply—extraordinary. \nThe quartet\, formed in 2017\, has gained notoriety both stateside and abroad. Having presented multiple tours in the United States\, as well as tours in both Germany and Austria\, Orphic continues its mission of commissioning new works for Percussion Quartet. To date\, the ensemble has over thirty original compositions to their commissioning credit. \nOrphic’s recent highlights include recital tours in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest\, the world premiere of Stefan Cwik’s Relics: Dances for Percussion Quartet and Orchestra with San Francisco’s Symphony Parnassus (nominated by the San Francisco Classical Voice for “Best New Music Performance” of the 2017-18 season)\, university residencies at Southern Nazarene University (OK) and George Fox University (OR)\, and a return engagement at the Arcata Playhouse (CA). In addition\, Orphic has been self-producing an ongoing concert series at University Presbyterian Church (CA) since early 2017\, and maintains a close relationship with the Nevada County Composer’s Cooperative\, having premiered works by Alexis Alrich\, Mark Vance\, and Durwynne Hsieh. \nOrphic will perform their flagship show\, Orphic: Unheard\, featuring a presentation of works commissioned by the ensemble. Covering a variety of genres and instrumentation\, the program seeks to expose the listener to sounds that are sure to fascinate the senses. Works by Dave Maric\, Kenneth Froelich\, Shaun Tilburg\, Bryce Cannell\, and Alejandro Viñao. \nOrphic’s upcoming engagements include the group’s international debut at the 2019 Day of Percussion in Nuremberg\, Germany\, an appearance on San Francisco’s Old First Concert Series\, a residency with the composition department at Las Positas College\, and a recital tour of the southern United States. \nOrphic Percussion is sponsored by Marimba One\, Black Swamp Percussion\, and Beetle Percussion.

SUMMARY:Full Circle: Turtle Wisdom Concert Premiere featuring Longshore's Music and LaDuke's Artwork at ScienceWorks
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, November 8 from 6-8pm\, percussionist Terry Longshore will premiere his new work for gong orchestra\, Full Circle: Turtle Wisdom at the ScienceWorks Museum in Ashland. Tickets are $10 and available online at https://scienceworksmuseum.org and will also be available for purchase at the door the evening of the event. \nScienceWorks Members and all SOU Faculty\, staff\, and students can get complimentary tickets by emailing: info@scienceworksmuseum.org\, and you will get a coupon code to receive your free ticket. \nThe new work will be performed at two times during the evening – 6:30pm and 7:30pm by the SOU Percussion Ensemble and students of Longshore’s Honors Course – “Making Music”. \nThe inspiration for the work is Betty LaDuke’s Turtle Wisdom – a series of works that features more than 20 colorful turtles as part of the musical score. LaDuke’s artworks will also be on display. \nABOUT THE MUSIC AND ART: \nFull Circle: Turtle Wisdom by Oregon composer and percussionist Terry Longshore draws its inspiration from his 2021 hour-long composition for large solo gong\, This Moment In Time\, and renowned artist Betty LaDuke’s series\, Turtle Wisdom. It is performed by a gong orchestra\, in which at least six and up to an unlimited number of members\, each with their own gong\, interpret one of Betty LaDuke’s Turtle Wisdom series of artworks\, guided by a text- and time-based score composed by Longshore. \nLaDuke’s Turtles explore themes of personal\, political\, and playful nature. Emerging from the pandemic in 2021\, LaDuke states that “TURTLES became my symbolic storytellers\, commenting on the events currently reshaping our lives.” \nThe performers utilize a plethora of implements and techniques to produce a seemingly endless array of sounds from their instruments. Spatialized throughout the performance space\, the audience is encircled by sounds of nature\, by the gongs’ captivating voices\, and by LaDuke’s dynamic artworks. The composition is composed in a way that allows anyone to participate\, regardless of musical or percussive experience. A pre-performance workshop provides participants with instruction on performance practice and score interpretation. \nThe compositional structure of Full Circle: Turtle Wisdom is inspired by the lunar calendar and numerous Indigenous peoples’ belief that turtles’ shells symbolize the 13 lunar cycles. The central area of the upper shell (carapace) displays 13 larger scutes\, each representing a lunar month. Additionally\, the encircling smaller scutes total 28\, corresponding to the days in a lunar cycle. The numbers 13 and 28 are used in rhythmic sections of the composition\, alternating with more lyrical and textural sections highlighted by the playing techniques.

SUMMARY:Neil Holland talks about his new book “Magnetic Moments” the fascinating story of the development of MRI technology
DESCRIPTION:“Magnetic Moments” is the inside story of the birth and growth of the medical technology that changed the world of diagnostic imaging\, authored by one of the first members of one of the pioneering research teams that brought the technology we know today as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) from pure research into clinical use. \nPart autobiography\, the book covers the author’s journey from being born in bombed-out Liverpool\, England in the aftermath of World War II; how he utilized his curiosity and interest in all things electronic to leave pharmaceutical research and become one of the key contributors to the development and commercialization of MRI\, ultimately moving to the United States. Holland charts the fifty-year pathway of development; from the crude experiments on samples a few millimeters in size to the creation of huge high-powered machines that probe the inner workings of the human body\, combining technologies and science from diverse branches of physics\, chemistry and engineering. \n“Magnetic Moments” tells not only the story of its author and his contribution to the development of MRI\, but also the intrigue and inside story of the competition\, jealousy\, and sometimes collaboration between competing research teams in the UK and the US – the academic infighting\, the sometimes hilarious misadventures and missteps\, the clash of egos. And as the technology emerges from academia into commercial development\, Holland provides the reader with a fascinating potpourri of first-hand stories from around the globe of corporate greed\, management ineptitude\, medical malpractice and ultimately triumph as the modality finally emerges as a powerful clinical tool. And how the Brits lost it all\, from being the first to launch MRI to no longer being a significant presence in the diagnostic imaging business. Holland’s stories are a vivid recollection illuminated by over 170 pictures\, mostly from his personal archive\, many never before published. As an accomplished musician\, he intertwines the history of MRI development with music references which astound and delight the reader. \nNeil Holland is an experienced published author of over fifty peer-reviewed scientific papers\, book chapters\, and journal articles. In his first full-length book\, his gift for storytelling comes to light. After leaving university research in the early 1980s\, he moved to the US shortly after beginning his professional career. Now retired\, he lives in Ashland\, Oregon where he writes and performs music and spends as much time hiking\, running\, biking\, camping\, and kayaking outdoors as he can.

SUMMARY:Building Post-Election Common Ground
DESCRIPTION:“Building Post-Election Common Ground” is a conversation between Mike and Emily Green co-founders of Common Ground Conversations on Race (CGC)\, \, Taylor Stewart\, founder of the Oregon Remembrance Project\, and host Tara Houston\, Community and Engagement Manager\, Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF). \nThe post-election narrative in this nation\, regardless of who wins\, will be of key importance. Political messaging and media play a significant role in the influence of perspectives nationwide. \nIn this talk\, Mike & Emily Green will introduce paradigm-shifting new knowledge and understanding of racial dynamics in American society today through an informed lens of historical context. The evening’s conversation will highlight how we can build a common ground of understanding. \n“Developing an understanding among people who disagree doesn’t mean they will find agreement. SUMMARY:REBOOT: The New Human Operating System by Abigail Stason
DESCRIPTION:Are you feeling overloaded in our busy world? In a global gig economy\, where every system is stretched and the world is upside down\, humans are lonelier\, more disconnected\, and divided. Today’s challenges have left many wondering how we continue to exist and thrive. \nIndividuals yearn for something more amidst the challenges they face. However\, they often struggle to pinpoint the precise questions to ask: How can I foster better relationships with others? What lies at the root of my inner turmoil? How do I effectively traverse this complex landscape? How do I not only survive but thrive in the modern world? \nThere’s an elusive quality to it—craving something deeper and the practical skills essential for navigating today’s world. People grapple with the biggest existential question: Who am I amidst the complexities of today’s world\, and how can I navigate it authentically? \nA new level of consciousness is needed\, where we are aware of and take responsibility for our impact on ourselves\, the environment\, and others\, inviting us to learn and adapt our behavior\, creating societies of agile human beings. This is the new Human Operating System. \nJoin us as Abby shares:\n• How technology is advancing faster than we are as a species\n• Why our current human operating system is outdated\n• What the new human operating system looks like\n• Skills you can take away and start applying right away\n• How to experience more peace\, ease\, and freedom \nWe must cultivate skillful human beings. Together\, let’s forge a path toward a world defined by peace\, tranquility\, and civility. \nJoin Abigail “Abby” Stason (she/her/hers)\, a master teacher\, skill builder\, thought leader\, published author\, and speaker for this provocative topic. Abigail spent most of her career as an executive on Wall Street before becoming an entrepreneur and social activist. With over 20\,000 hours of leadership experience\, she led through the 2000 dot com tech bubble and the 2008 market crash. Abby left a 19-year career to follow her mission statement of being an exceptional partner to the human race and planet and to facilitate global consciousness. As a certified LGBTQ+ and Women-Owned business\, and having experienced discrimination\, she is passionate about championing equality and lifting humanity. \nAbby equips human beings and leaders with behavioral skills for a modern world and global economy. SUMMARY:Windows in Time: Lost Oregon Ski Areas
DESCRIPTION:Oregon is currently home to 13 downhill ski areas and resorts\, but many others have come and gone over the years. Bend resident Steve Stenkamp\, retired teacher and firefighter\, has researched these “lost” ski areas of Oregon. To date\, he has found 50 different ski areas that are no longer used today\, with 11 of them in southern Oregon. Join us to hear the stories of some of the lost ski areas of southern Oregon and beyond. Steve will give this presentation live via Zoom in the Gresham Room of the Ashland Library. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays\, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays\, in-person). Recordings of Medford presentations are available on the JCLS Beyond YouTube channel.
