SUMMARY:Beyond the Comfort Zone: A Photographer’s Journey into Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Meet author and photojournalist Christopher Briscoe as he shares photographs and experiences from his time in Ukraine. \nWhile journalism documents the initial chapters of history\, it’s Christopher Briscoe’s lens and first-person accounts that bring those moments into sharp focus\, immortalizing them in vivid detail. As a seasoned photojournalist\, Briscoe delves into compelling stories no matter where he is: from a tense visit to Oregon’s Death Row to photo-essays of New Orleans\, Ethiopia\, and Cambodia. \nIn his latest gripping book\, “The Child on the Train\,” Briscoe travels to war-torn Ukraine\, navigating perilous routes to uncover the poignant narratives of ordinary people grappling with the harsh realities of the Russian invasion. Through his evocative photographs and narratives\, Briscoe illuminates the resilience and spirit of a nation under siege\, shining a light in a time of darkness. \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.

SUMMARY:Rogue Valley Farm to School Celebrates 15 Years!
DESCRIPTION:TURNIP THE BEET! Celebrate Rogue Valley Farm to School’s 15th anniversary with the Eight Dollar Mountain Trio and Friends\, dancing\, a rousing raffle\, food\, wine\, and beer. \nJoin us from 4-8 p.m.\, June 29\, at Fry Family Farm\, 2184 Ross Lane\, Medford. Click here to buy tickets: bit.ly/3wZnjUa. \nHANLEY FARM — “Don’t yuk my yum!” Rogue Valley Farm to School educator Meghan Murphy reminds a bushel of third graders from Central Point as they gather for lunch at Hanley Farm\, just outside Jacksonville. On the menu today: radishes. \nStarted in 2009\, Rogue Valley Farm to School (RVF2S) is part of a national network that connects schools\, local farmers\, and communities\, cultivating healthy kids and local economies alike. \nIn this enormously successful program\, students gain access to healthy local foods\, to be sure. But they also gain educational opportunities that include weekly classes — taught by a member of the RVF2S staff — about living and eating healthy\, school gardens\, cooking lessons\, and farms visits\, two per year. \nEach month\, school-based educators also serve samples of a local\, seasonal fruit or vegetable to students in their own cafeteria. This month\, the featured vegetable has been — you guessed it — radishes. \n“Everything we do is about building a culture of health\, about forging relationships and connections around growing food\,” says co-executive director Rebecca Slosberg. The economic benefits are real\, too. A recent study by the nonprofit Ecotrust found that for every dollar allocated through Oregon’s Farm to School program for procurement of Oregon grown and processed foods\, two dollars of economic activity is generated in the local economy.

SUMMARY:Visual Artist Performance
DESCRIPTION:Interdisciplinary artist Beca Blake will make a performative art statement about intersectional identity in the post-pandemic era from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday\, June 29\, at The Gallery @ AIFF\, 389 Main St.\, Ashland. \nBlake will be assembling\, by hand and machine sewing\, new textile art in the street front window via a mock studio process to finish Origin: Intersectional\, an identity art garment that Blake began fabricating in May 2024. \nThe garment is comprised of a compilation of references to postcolonial aesthetics on issues of identity\, authority\, freedom\, and rights. \nThis ultra-contemporary art practice functions as a spark to ignite critical thinking through creative engagement\, dialogue\, and cultural activation in the post-settler social constructs of rural Southern Oregon. \n

SUMMARY:The Crest Fest
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for Crest Fest\, a day filled with live music and dancing\, farm and pond tours\, goat hikes\, children’s activities and entertainment\, and food\, wine\, beer\, and soft drinks for sale. \nThe event will be held 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday\, June 30\, at Willow-Witt Ranch\, 658 Shale City Road\, Ashland. No dogs or outside alcohol are permitted. Visit thecrestatwillowwitt.org for more information. \nFeatured musical artists include: \nBen Rice and the PDX Hustle \nBen Rice might be described as quiet and unassuming – until he picks up a guitar. That stealthy quality has earned him the moniker “blues ninja\,” evidenced in his vocal chops and songcraft as well as his guitar playing. While Ben started in traditional blues\, over the years he’s built upon that foundation with soul\, R&B\, folk and country to fashion a welcoming front porch where everybody wants to hang out into the wee hours. Since his large-stage debut at the International Blues Challenge in 2014\, Ben has made the leap from Northwest act to national and international touring artist\, featuring at festivals and stages far and wide. \nRice’s guitar style has been described as “fearless\,” “inventive\,” and “powerful.” Whether he’s sliding up and down on a steel resonator or reeling off stinging leads on his custom-crafted electric\, Ben’s intensity and inventiveness never fail to turn heads. Audiences also respond to his heartfelt songwriting that carries a classic\, strongly relatable vibe. \nIn 2023 Ben added horns\, vocal harmonies\, piano and organ to his lineup for a larger\, more energetic band that he calls Ben Rice & The PDX Hustle. The response locally and on tour has been electric. \nVictoria Lawton-Diaz \nVictoria is a local singer/songwriter who you might have had a chance to hear at Martino’s or the Vintage Cafe. She writes beautiful songs and performing covers of other musicians. \n Rachel Buklad & the Creekside Dance Band Performing Contra Dance tunes with a dance caller \nRachel and the advanced students of Creekside Strings\, a nonprofit providing young fiddlers a variety of activities to develop their skills and their relationships\, will perform contra dance music. The audience is invited to join the fun and get up and dance. Contra dance is done in two long lines of couples. The movements are similar to square dance steps. No experience necessary. There will be a caller to teach the moves and tell you when each is to be done. \nThe Blueberry Blossoms \nBlueberry Blossoms\, the duo of Jodie Jean Marston and Andrea Johnson\, offers whimsical bluegrass and folk-inspired music for children of all ages. Marston and Johnson combine years of teaching early childhood education\, friendship and performing music with songs about the magic of nature into an act that teaches as well as entertains.

SUMMARY:PACING: Photographs by Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon University’s Schneider Museum of Art (SMA) is thrilled to announce its summer exhibition\, “PACING: Photographs by Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak.” \nThe exhibition will open at 5 p.m. on Thursday\, June 13\, and will be on view through August 10\, 2024. \nAbout the Exhibition: \nThe act of pacing involves moving forward in a measured\, rhythmic manner\, where each step is taken in consideration of the one before it. “PACING” explores this duality of ease and tension through the lens-based works of three midcareer\, female-identifying photographers: Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak. Each artist employs performative methods to document their bodies and those of others\, reflecting on their relationships to social histories\, expectations\, and structures. \nMeet the Artists: \nMelanie Flood has used the camera as a tool for self-expression throughout her life. Her photographs\, spanning from childhood to the present\, explore her evolving femininity and critique gender constructs through a blend of vulnerability and playful experimentation. \nTarrah Krajnak reclaims the photographic medium’s masculine history through her Indigenous transracial adoptee experience. Her interrelated works use the body to reenact lost histories\, employing rituals and performances to create a continuous connection between her presence\, the work’s origins\, and its future. \nDru Donovan highlights the strength and ability of the female body in both athletes and caregivers. Her crisp black-and-white images juxtapose the force and endurance required for various actions\, emphasizing the interdependence and mutual responsibility inherent in these roles. \nMore information: https://sma.sou.edu/exhibitions/pacing-photographs-by-dru-donovan-melanie-flood-and-tarrah-krajnak/ \nImage: Dru Donovan\, Liberty Pose\, 2017\, Video loop\, 35 x 57 inches\, courtesy of the artist.
