SUMMARY:Lama Sundays – Calm Abiding Meditation
DESCRIPTION:This meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \n“From this practice\, we can experience a stable and calm mind. We learn to maintain and return to a sense of stillness\, no matter what our outer circumstances. The mind is relaxed\, alert and aware. The results of this practice are serenity\, freedom in the face of circumstances\, and ultimately Buddhahood.” From Meditation for Beginners\, by Bokar Rinpoche \nJoin in-person or via Zoom (hybrid). Please contact the office to receive our monthly emails and the Zoom link for this practice: OFFICE@KSCASHLAND.ORG \nHeld 9 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday\, Feb. 4\, March 10\, and April 7.

SUMMARY:Sunday Service: Our Commitment to Transformation
DESCRIPTION:When the Article II process began\, one of the things that many people hoped would become explicit is our willingness to be changed by being in community. \nThe Commission was determined to go beyond agreement with ideas to commitment to values that we knew would challenge us to grow\, change\, and become more willing to embody in the world. What transformations does Unitarian Universalism invite us to engage? \n“Change is inevitable\, but transformation is a choice. ” – Heather Ash Amara \nAttend in person or watch live or recorded on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@roguevalleyunitarianuniver8871

SUMMARY:From Thorns to Blossoms: A Japanese American Family in War and Peace with author Mitzi Asai Loftus
DESCRIPTION:“Mitsuko “Mitzi” Asai was not yet ten years old in the spring of 1942 when President Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066 sent 120\,000 people of Japanese ancestry–about two-thirds of them US citizens–from their homes on the West Coast to inland prison camps. \nThey included Mitzi and most of her family\, who operated a fruit orchard in Hood River\, Oregon. The Asais spent much of World War II in the camps while two of the older sons served in the Pacific in the U.S. Army. Three years later\, when the camps began to close\, the family returned to Hood River to find an altered community. Shop owners refused to serve neighbors they had known for decades; racism and hostility were open and largely unchecked. Humiliation and shame drove teenaged Mitzi to reject her Japanese heritage\, including her birth name. More than a decade later\, her life took another turn when a Fulbright grant sent her to teach in Japan\, where she reconnected with her roots. In “From Thorns to Blossoms\,” Mitzi recounts her rich and varied life\, from a childhood surrounded by barbed wire and hatred to a successful career as a high school English teacher and college instructor in English as a Second Language. Today\, Asai descendants continue to tend the Hood River farm while the town confronts its shameful history. It’s the remarkable story of a transformation from thorns into blossoms\, pain into healing. \nBorn on a fruit orchard in Hood River\, Oregon\, in 1932\, Mitzi Asai Loftus spent three years of her childhood in government incarceration camps in California and Wyoming. For more than seventy years\, she has given public talks about her family’s experience to audiences of all ages. Having lived much of her adult life in Eugene and Coos Bay\, she now resides in Ashland.

SUMMARY:Rogue Valley Men’s Circle Fire Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Weekly: A weekly Men’s Circle Fire Ceremony on Monday nights from 6:30-8:30 pm around the fire at the Island Fire Pit in scenic Lithia Park in Ashland\, Oregon. \nWhat could be more natural than gathering around the fire and talking about the challenges of being a man and/or assuming masculine roles in our current culture? \nCeremony: This Men’s Circle is conducted as a shamanic ceremony to establish connection and community. It is compatible with any religious and spiritual beliefs. We offer intentions\, smudge with sage\, and release things into the fire. A weekly theme such as “confidence” or “purpose” is introduced. \nTalking Stick and Fire Ceremony: A talking stick is passed to speak your truth on this topic and things coming up in your life. The Men’s Circle will be conducted as a fire ceremony as long as we are allowed to build fires this year. SUMMARY:Maureen Hicks discusses her new biography The Gift Shop at the DMZ
DESCRIPTION:When a Buddhist therapist contracts to counsel soldiers around the world\, her ingrained opposition to war stands in the way of happiness. \nRepelled but curious about military culture\, her careful listening to servicemembers and families leads to empathy and understanding for their challenges. In postings from the U.S. to Germany to Korea\, serving soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan\, she learns to respect and serve those enduring trauma. Forced to practice informal counseling\, she wonders how she can make an impact. When the too-rare sessions lead to a struggle with depression\, she must reach out with letters to friends. Can a deeper study of Buddhism steady her? The immersion in military culture grows more savvy\, sanguine beliefs – so she might wrest deep meaning from absurdity. \nMaureen Hicks\, Ph.D. is a psychologist with thirty years of therapy experience.

SUMMARY:Mythic Acts: Power Moves for Personal Transformation by Sophia Blanton
DESCRIPTION:The telling and enacting of Myth is one of the oldest forms of group therapy.\n\nAncient peoples gathered to immerse in mythic narratives and themes that mirror the journeys and dramas of the human psyche\, finding in them inspirational templates for personal growth. This workshop with Sophia Blanton presents the mythic Birth of Athena\, Greek Goddess of Wisdom in a weaving of myth-telling\, movement and ceremony.\n\nWe will read between the lines of the story to examine how the Greeks converted the energies of earlier mythologies. We will align with key mythic themes from the Birth of Athena and learn to enact them through Sophia’s lifework in Ritual Embodiment and “Prayerformance.” Be prepared to listen\, question\, move and transform!\n\nSophia Blanton works at the intersection of Myth\, Movement and Magic. She renders key mythic themes of the collective psyche into ceremonies\, sacred dramas and ritual movement practice. From Delphi to Giza to Avalon\, Sophia has inspired communities to tap into the deep well of sacred-soul wisdom bubbling up through the timeless stories that shape our cultures. Her work brings the healing power of the myth into the here and now through the movement of the body.\n\nPresenter’s Website: https://www.rogueworldmusic.org\n\nFREE ADMISSION – 1757 Ashland St.\, Ashland\, OR. SUMMARY:Windows in Time: Railroading in Southern Oregon
DESCRIPTION:Railroads have played a pivotal role in the history and development of Southern Oregon. Robert Hirning will examine how the construction of our own Siskiyou Line influenced the present-day economies of Jackson and Josephine Counties. \nJoin us for a discussion on the rise of “Robber Barons\,” inept train robbers\, and the failed attempts to reach the California Coast that kept our region uniquely isolated. \nRobert Hirning has been a lifelong “railfan” and has chased his passion for trains since childhood. Robert has traveled widely by train over most of North America\, from the arctic to the tropics\, and across Asia from the Sea of Japan to the Baltic. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays\, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays\, in-person). Recordings of Medford presentations are available on the JCLS Beyond YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:"Bridging Divides" Monthly Video Discussion Series: How Our Minds Play Tricks on Us with Marla Estes
DESCRIPTION:To bridge divides\, we need to understand how our mental operating systems automatically create biases\, blind spots\, and shortcuts — all of which stop us from seeing things clearly. \n“Confirmation bias is seeing what we expect to see. Desirability bias is seeing what we want to see.” — Adam Grant \nAre you feeling concerned about the growing divides occurring in our world? The first step\, and one that each one of us can do\, is to “depolarize within.” We do this by learning about our human “operating systems\,” becoming self-aware and then making different choices about how we behave. \nPolarization not only diminishes our capacity for true deliberative dialog and problem solving\, but it is dividing society into contentious\, conflicted parts. Left unchecked\, it is becoming a fundamental threat to social harmony and ultimately the core mechanisms of democratic society. \nJoin facilitator Marla Estes\, MA every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. and learn how to “depolarize within.” Watch fascinating and insightful videos carefully selected to explore ways to depolarize\, and then engage in facilitated discussion to help integrate new perspectives. \nWith a background in Psychology\, Marla created Building Bridgers in 2017 to address the growing social and political polarization in our country. \nFor over 15 years\, she has been giving presentations\, movie nights\, book groups\, workshops\, and classes helping people learn to develop insights and skills in approaching difficult conversations\, deepening and growing healthy\, functional\, and fulfilling relationships. \nMarla is currently the Jackson County Coordinator for Urban Rural Action\, which builds relationships through differences. \nPresenter’s Website: https://www.BuildingBridgers.com \nFREE ADMISSION – 1757 Ashland St.\, Ashland\, OR.
