DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon University’s Schneider Museum of Art (SMA) reopens at 5 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11\, 2024\, with a new exhibition\, “What’s at Stake.” \nCurated by Catharine Clark\, owner and founding director of Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco\, this exhibition will feature artists Zeina Barakeh\, Al Farrow\, and Masami Teraoka. This compelling exhibition explores the urgent issues of our time\, delving into the mechanisms of war and colonialism while interrogating the unpredictability and legitimacy of armed conflict. It will be on view through March 23\, 2024. \n“What’s at Stake” sheds light on the devastating impacts of war\, human rights violations\, and environmental collapse\, compelling viewers to pause and reflect on our collective responsibility to one another. The exhibition raises essential questions about the consequences when violence goes unchecked and challenges us to consider what is truly at stake in a world grappling with these pressing issues. \nSMA Executive Director Scott Malbaurn shared\, “During a recent trip to San Francisco with museum members\, we visited solo exhibitions at Catharine Clark Gallery featuring Masami Teraoka\, Al Farrow\, and Zeina Barakeh. Recognizing the common theme of exploring the impact of war\, especially for artists raised in wartime milieus like Teraoka and Barakeh alongside the sculpture of Al Farrow\, which are assembled with war time munitions\, we decided to present these shows collectively as “What’s at Stake.” This group exhibition becomes a poignant question and statement\, resonating with contemporary violent events that seem to be happening all of the time globally.” \nAn opening reception will take place 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11. Curator Catharine Clark and select artists will be in attendance. The opening reception is free and open to the public; complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres will be provided. The Museum will be closed on Saturday\, Jan. 13 for a private event. \nNew Masterworks on Loan and Highlights from the Permanent Collection will also be on view in the Entry Gallery. SUMMARY:Losar\, the Tibetan New Year
DESCRIPTION:Tibetan New Year is celebrated in early February this year. To honor Losar\, we practice a meditation of cutting through obstacles. This clears the energy of the old year\, to make space for a fresh start. \nOur Losar meditations are Mahakala\, a fierce expression of loving kindness and compassion\, followed by Chenrezig\, a peaceful expression of loving kindness and compassion. These companion practices offer a balance of methods to lift the suffering of beings. \nLama Yeshe will lead the two practices\, opening each with a short talk about Losar and the practices themselves. Mahakala will be done in chanted Tibetan; Condensed Chenrezig will be done in English. \nAll are welcome to attend either or both of the meditations. For those who attend in person\, you are invited to bring contributions of non-perishable foods to benefit the Talent Food Bank\, and also clothing and warm camping gear for the “In the Warm” project. \nMay we all join in clearing obstacles from the past\, to welcome in a new year! \nPlease contact the office if you need the Zoom link: office@kscashland.org

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting – Guitar Society of Southern Oregon
DESCRIPTION:The Guitar Society of Southern Oregon meets from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month in the beautiful tasting room of Paschal Winery in Talent. \nThe gatherings are open to the public\, and all are welcome. They start with a set of music by volunteer performers\, followed by an intermission to socialize and to discuss Society business and upcoming guitar-related events. The evening concludes with a second set of music\, sometimes performed by visiting or local featured artists. \nThe meeting program includes a wide variety of selections\, performed mostly on guitar\, and some vocal by amateurs\, students and professionals. Anyone may announce upcoming events during the intermission as well.

DESCRIPTION:With the guidance of the Ashland Culture of Peace Commission\, the Ashland\, Oregon City Council joined the International Cities of Peace (ICP) on May 16\, 2017\, with a proclamation identifying Ashland as a City of Peace. Ashland was the 164th City of Peace of the current 399 cities globally. There are only two International Cities of Peace in the world that have a World Peace Flame\, and Ashland is one of them. \nVery quickly\, Ashland was seen as an emerging ICP model with its strong and extensive community base and innovative actions. Ashland has been acknowledged as such globally. We installed the World Peace Flame in 2018 which was followed the next year by the Ashland Global Peace Conference attended by UN Ambassador Anwarul K. Chowdhury.\nThe goals of an International City of Peace are encouraging a local and global culture of peace through safety\, prosperity\, and quality of life. \nCurrent actions include:\n• Mayor Graham acknowledged Ashland as a City of Peace\, City Council\, December 5\, 2023.\n• The World Peace Flame is a perpetual beacon of hope\, peace\, and resilience for Ashland\, Oregon\, the United States\, and internationally.\n• Derry-Londonderry\, Northern Ireland\, the only other city with a World Peace Flame\, joined ICP on 9/21/2023\, a major milestone after years of bloody warfare. Ashland and Derry Londonderry\, Ireland are developing a special City of Peace relationship initially focused on young people engaged in climate change\, music\, and song.\n• Plans for establishing beneficial relationships between International Cities of Peace and businesses and corporations through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are being developed. \nLearning objectives in this presentation:\n• Learn about the role and impact of Ashland as an International City of Peace.\n• Identify and discuss your action ideas for Ashland as a City of Peace. \nDAVID WICK has over 30 years of executive and management training and organizational development consulting experience and has held important positions within Sun Microsystems\, Stanford University\, Levi Strauss\, and the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD). \nHe has designed extensive international training programs and has received accolades in both the business and peacebuilding arenas. \nAfter working in the NGO peacebuilding arena since 1980 and helping to develop the early days of the International Day of Peace in civil society\, David co-founded the Ashland Culture of Peace Commission (ACPC) with Irene Kai on September 21\, 2015. The mission of ACPC is to provide leadership and guidance for Ashland as a City of Peace dedicated to transforming our attitudes\, behaviors\, and institutions into ones that foster harmonious relationships with each other and the natural world. This compelling exhibition explores the urgent issues of our time\, delving into the mechanisms of war and colonialism while interrogating the unpredictability and legitimacy of armed conflict. It will be on view through March 23\, 2024. \n“What’s at Stake” sheds light on the devastating impacts of war\, human rights violations\, and environmental collapse\, compelling viewers to pause and reflect on our collective responsibility to one another. The exhibition raises essential questions about the consequences when violence goes unchecked and challenges us to consider what is truly at stake in a world grappling with these pressing issues. \nSMA Executive Director Scott Malbaurn shared\, “During a recent trip to San Francisco with museum members\, we visited solo exhibitions at Catharine Clark Gallery featuring Masami Teraoka\, Al Farrow\, and Zeina Barakeh. Recognizing the common theme of exploring the impact of war\, especially for artists raised in wartime milieus like Teraoka and Barakeh alongside the sculpture of Al Farrow\, which are assembled with war time munitions\, we decided to present these shows collectively as “What’s at Stake.” This group exhibition becomes a poignant question and statement\, resonating with contemporary violent events that seem to be happening all of the time globally.” \nAn opening reception will take place 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11. DESCRIPTION:William Green T’Vault has been celebrated for his accomplishments: Oregon’s first newspaper editor\, the first Postmaster General of the Oregon Territory\, Jacksonville’s first newspaper editor and publisher\, and the first Speaker of the House in the first Oregon State Legislature. Join Carolyn Kingsnorth she traces T’Vault through legal and political careers in Indiana\, Arkansas\, and Oregon and explains how T’Vault or Tevault or Teevault was also a first-rate scallywag\, reinventing himself whenever his past came close to catching up with him. \nCarolyn is President of Historic Jacksonville\, Inc. and Vice President of the Southern Oregon Historical Society. She has served as a state level spokesperson for adult literacy programs\, worked as a researcher for discrepancies between business needs and educational offerings for Los Angeles County\, and been an editor and publisher of the Jacksonville Review. Today\, she contributes history themed articles to local publications and creates live and virtual tours for Historic Jacksonville\, Inc. (https://historicjacksonville.org) along with daily social media posts. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays\, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays\, in-person).
