SUMMARY:BIG IDEAS DISCUSSION SERIES PRESENTS “Tackling the Affordable Housing Shortage Head-On”
DESCRIPTION:The Ashland branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Jackson County Library Services are hosting a free “Tackling the\nAffordable Housing Shortage Head-On” discussion for the public. \nOregon is in the throes of a full-blown housing crisis facing a current deficit of 140\,000 units. \nThe lack of housing is driving homelessness\, increasing prices\, and eroding the state’s livability. Marsh was first elected in November 2016 and currently serves as Chair of the House Committee on Climate\, Energy and Environment. District 5 reaches from Applegate to the Greensprings\nand includes Ashland\, Talent\, Phoenix\, a southern portion of Medford\, Jacksonville and Ruch. \nBrandon Goldman is an experienced urban planner and community development professional. He has more than 24 years of experience in planning and housing development. He\nhas long worked to promote Ashland as a livable community that prioritizes the needs of all citizens. \nThe monthly “Big Ideas” discussion series features prominent local experts speaking on relevant and timely issues affecting our community. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Ashland\nBranch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Jackson County Library Services. SUMMARY:My Only Resolution for the New Year: Honoring My True Self by Linda Reppond
DESCRIPTION:Perhaps\, like me\, you have given up on making New Year’s resolutions after so many quickly fell away and became one more way to beat yourself up. \nMost people make resolutions about various aspects of self-improvement: diet and exercise; creating and maintaining order in home\, finances\, or work life; or changing habits that are self-destructive. \nThe problem is that when the new behaviors fail\, as they often do\, we end up using them to make ourselves miserable and to validate our inner critic. Learn and explore how we might turn this\, instead\, into ways to nurture and honor ourselves. Focusing on our strengths\, not our weaknesses\, we can begin to honor our true selves\, and allow our best self to shine. \nRev. Dr. Linda Reppond lives in Ashland\, Oregon\, as a mostly retired CSL minister. While no longer working in a full-time ministry role\, Dr. Linda remains a fierce advocate for young\, emerging spiritual leaders: as a mentor and coach\, as an honored elder at events\, and Chair of ReGeneration\, the scholarship fund for young people entering ministry. \nDr. Linda was the founding minister of the Launching Pad\, a dedicated young adult church in Centers for Spiritual Living. For over ten years\, the Launching Pad\, with locations in Berkeley\, CA\, St. George\, Utah\, and Ashland\, Oregon\, served as a magnet for conscious young adults who chose to live in community and be supported in deepening a personal spiritual practice and a community of peers who are living their truth and loving their lives. \nShe served as director of the National Runaway Switchboard\, President of the National Network for Youth\, and Executive Director for Seattle Youth and Community Services\, Special Olympics Washington\, and other charities. \nDr. Linda received a Masters in Consciousness Studies at the Holmes Institute in San Diego. She received her Doctor of Ministry at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley. She currently serves as the Youth Minister of her home church\, CSL Rogue Valley in Medford. SUMMARY:Windows in Time: Medford and Ashland’s Historic Theaters: “It all Began with the ‘IT’”
DESCRIPTION:As the towns Ashland and Medford grew in the 1880’s\, residents sought a place to gather for musical\, dramatic\, educational\, and social entertainments. Join us to hear the stories and histories of these “public amusement” spaces like the Rialto\, the still-standing Craterian and Holly\, and the forgotten ones like the Ugo\, the Isis\, the Liberty and the Savoy. \nRon Kramer was the executive director of Jefferson Public Radio from 1974 to 2012 and since 2021\, he has served as the Southern Oregon Historical Society’s Executive Director. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays\, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays\, in-person). Recordings of Medford presentations are available on the JCLS Beyond YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Bridging Divides Video & Discussion Series: Learning to Depolarize our Relationships with Marla Estes M.A.
DESCRIPTION:January’s topic: A prerequisite to bridging divides is being able to not be so certain about\, and cling so tightly\, to our perspectives. \n“Let go of certainty. The opposite isn’t uncertainty. It’s openness\, curiosity and a willingness to embrace paradox\, rather than choose up sides.” \nAre you feeling concerned about the growing divides occurring in our world? \nThe first step\, and one that each one of us can do\, is to “depolarize within.” We do this by learning about our human “operating systems\,” becoming self-aware and then making different choices about how we behave. \nPolarization not only diminishes our capacity for true deliberative dialog and problem solving\, but it is dividing society into contentious\, conflicted parts. Left unchecked\, it is becoming a fundamental threat to social harmony and ultimately the core mechanisms of democratic society. \nJoin facilitator Marla Estes\, MA every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. and learn how to “depolarize within.” Watch fascinating and insightful videos carefully selected to explore ways to depolarize and then engage in facilitated discussion to help integrate new perspectives. \nWith a background in Psychology\, Marla created Building Bridgers in 2017 to address the growing social and political polarization in our country. \nFor over 15 years\, she has been giving presentations\, movie nights\, book groups\, workshops\, and classes helping people learn to develop insights and skills in approaching difficult conversations\, deepening and growing healthy\, functional\, and fulfilling relationships. \nMarla is currently the Jackson County Coordinator for Urban Rural Action which builds relationships through differences. \nPresenter’s Website: https://www.BuildingBridgers.com

SUMMARY:Newcomers’ Night & Calm Abiding Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Calm Abiding Meditation followed by a talk by the lamas and gathering. All are welcome! \nCalm Abiding meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \nAfter a guided meditation practice with our two lamas\, there will be a welcome and introduction to all the classes and offerings this winter and spring. This gathering is sometimes lovingly called “Newcomers’ Night” because it is a great way for new people to meet sangha members and to get the lay of the land at KSC. Simultaneously\, many long-time members also like to attend to celebrate the start of a new season of deep and rich learning
