SUMMARY:Walk into Ashland's Past
DESCRIPTION:Although maybe not as exciting as having an actual “time machine\,” Klamath Bird Observatory board member Jeff LaLande (archaeologist and historian) will again offer a “Walk Into Ashland’s Past.” It was more than a year ago that Jeff first offered this event. It proved to be very popular. \nYou will walk through the site of the Shasta Indians’ village\, where the Plaza is now\, and through the town’s changes — from initial settlement by White Americans in the 1850s to the present time. This history walk is meant to enrich your own experience of the town. (Plus\, all of your $$$ go to KBO!) \nChoose to join one of the two “history walks”: Oct. 7 and Oct. 14. Both walks will follow the same route\, each lasting about three hours. The walk will be followed by the enjoyment of your choice of a “cheerful beverage” and snack at a downtown eatery — Jeff is picking up the tab. \nWhen: Saturday\, October 7th and October 14th\, 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM\nWhere: We will meet outside the front of the Ashland Library (near the statue at the intersection of Siskiyou Blvd. and Gresham St. We’ll spend time moseying along East Main Street and along North Main Street to Laurel\, then we’ll walk through the Granite St./Skidmore neighborhood\, and end at the Plaza.\nMax. number of people for each history walk: 18\nDonation per person: $75

SUMMARY:Oppenheimer’s Dilemma
DESCRIPTION:“Now I am become death\, the destroyer of worlds”\, quoted Robert Oppenheimer years after leading development of the atomic bomb. Will someone in the future say the same thing about genetic engineering\, artificial intelligence\, geoengineering\, or some other 21st-century technology? \nIn the mid-20th century\, invention\, development and use of nuclear weapons reminded the world of moral and ethical implications of scientific and technological development. In this salon\, we’ll discuss the responsibilities of those who create new and transformational technology. Who is responsible to ensure responsible use of technology? Is it us? \nThe Jefferson Center invites you to join a discussion of these questions. This event is part of the Salon series of The Jefferson Center\, a Rogue Valley nonprofit focused on critical thinking using secular humanist values to understand and engage with issues important to our community. See https:thejeffcenter.org for more details on this and other events.

SUMMARY:Willi Carlisle presented by the Ashland Folk Collective
DESCRIPTION:Willi Carlisle is a poet and a folk singer for the people\, but his extraordinary gift for turning a phrase isn’t about high falutin’ pontificatin’; it’s about looking out for one another and connecting through our shared human condition. \nBorn and raised on the Midwestern plains\, Carlisle is a product of the punk to folk music pipeline that’s long fueled frustrated young men looking to resist. After falling for the rich ballads and tunes of the Ozarks\, where he now lives\, he began examining the full spectrum of American musical history. This insatiable stylistic diversity is obvious in his wildly raucous live performances\, where songs range from sardonic trucker-ballads like “Vanlife” to the heartbreaking queer waltz “Life on the Fence\,” to an existential talkin’ blues about a panic attack in Walmart’s aisle five. With guitar\, fiddle\, button-box\, banjo\, harmonicas\, rhythm-bones\, and Willi’s booming baritone\, this is bonafide populist folk music in the tradition of cowboys\, frontier fiddlers\, and tall-tale tellers. Carlisle recognizes that the only thing holding us back from greatness is each other. With a quick wit and big sing-alongs\, these folksongs bring us a step closer to breaking down our divides. \nOriginally from Chicago\, Rachel Baiman moved to Nashville at eighteen\, and has spent the last decade working as a musician in a wide variety of roles\, from session musician (Molly Tuttle\, Kelsey Waldon\, Caroline Spence)\, to live sidewoman (Kacey Musgraves\, Amy Ray)\, to bandmate and producer. Fiddle music was her first love\, and she is known in the bluegrass and old time world for her work with progressive acoustic duo 10 String Symphony with fiddle player Christian Sedelmyer. Her first solo album\, Shame\, was produced by Andrew Marlin of Mandolin Orange\, and established her role as part of a new generation of political songwriters.

SUMMARY:UFOs and the Public Psyche: The Massive Arizona UFO Flyover by Stacey Wright\, MUFON State Director
DESCRIPTION:The March 1997 events in and around Phoenix\, AZ commonly known as “The Phoenix Lights Incident\,” remains the world’s largest UFO/UAP mass-sighting to this day. \nLights and huge low-flying objects of varying descriptions were seen by thousands of people across 300 miles of Arizona desert the evening of March 13\, 1997. With her knowledge and investigative expertise\, Stacy examines data points from eyewitness accounts\, tracking the one very large boomerang-shaped craft as it traversed the entire state\, and the numerous lesser-known other sightings of strange-shaped craft linking this landmark event. \nDuring her fascinating lecture and slideshow\, Stacey lays out the facts\, busts the myths\, and presents interesting timelines\, details\, and narratives surrounding this now-infamous and misunderstood case and its impact on the public. \nNOTE: Stacey Wright will be presenting IN PERSON \nStacey Wright is the State Director for Arizona MUFON\, and the Director of Phoenix MUFON (Mutual UFO Network.) MUFON is one of the oldest and largest ET/UFO research and education organizations in the world\, with more than 4\,000 members in 50 states and more than 40 countries. \nStacey is a certified Field Investigator and STAR Team member for MUFON\, and over the past 16 years she has helped to build the Phoenix MUFON chapter from the ground up to become MUFON International’s 2017 Chapter Of The Year. \nStacey has worked as team leader on Roswell archaeological digs with Don Schmitt\, helped design and produce the Phoenix Lights exhibit for the Arizona Historical Society Museum\, and was team leader for the revision of MUFON’s State Director Handbook. She is the organizer of MUFON’s Annual Field Investigator Boot Camp\, which has been held in Mesa\, AZ for the past six years. The Boot Camp is a weekend of concentrated instruction on the protocols for completing a quality investigation of a UFO-related event. \nStacey has a true passion for investigating and appreciating numerous mysteries\, whether they be archaeological\, interdimensional\, or celestial. She has enjoyed working 28 years for the public school system\, raising two amazing children\, and four amazing grandchildren. In her spare time\, she enjoys kayaking\, star watching\, archery\, and camping/hiking in the tall pines and high country of Arizona. \nPresenter’s Website: https://www.PhoenixMUFON.com \nPart of RVML’s October “UFOs & ETs Month”\nFull Event Calendar: https://rvml.org/events \nFREE ADMISSION – 1757 Ashland St.\, Ashland\, OR. SUMMARY:Windows in Time: The Tumultuous “Jackson County Rebellion:” One Historian’s Personal Perspective
DESCRIPTION:During the early 1930s — the “worst hard times” of the early Great Depression — Jackson County experienced a political convulsion of political extremism. Two local demagogues relentlessly issued reckless (and untrue) charges and baseless accusations in their newspapers during the early Depression. Their campaign to wrest control of county government away from the local establishment successfully stoked resentment and anger among hard-pressed residents. Now known as the “Jackson County Rebellion\,” this dramatic episode gained Southern Oregon unwanted negative attention nationally. It ended in ballot theft and murder. Historian Jeff LaLande\, who has authored the book “The Jackson County Rebellion: A Populist Uprising in Depression-Era Oregon\,” will discuss past events\, as well as how he came to be interested in them and eventually came to write a book about what occurred in Jackson County. If attendees have read LaLande’s book before attending the program\, they will have the opportunity to pose questions and give comments to the presenter. \nJeff LaLande has been a resident of the Rogue Valley for over fifty-five years. He graduated from Georgetown University in Washington\, D.C.\, and later received his M.A. in archaeology from Oregon State University and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Oregon. He worked for more than thirty years with the U.S. Forest Service as an archaeologist and historian and has published articles and several books on regional history. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services.

SUMMARY:Jeffrey LaLande talks about "The Jackson County Rebellion"
DESCRIPTION:Local historian and archeologist Jeff Lalande will discuss his new book\, “The Jackson County Rebellion” — a chronicle of a historic populist uprising during the Great Depression — at 5:30 p.m. Thursday\, Oct. 12\, at Southern Oregon University’s Hannon Library\, in the Meese Room\, according to a news release. \nThe talk\, hosted by Friends of the Hannon Library\, is free and open to the public. A Zoom link will also be available at https://hanlib.sou.edu/friends/lectureseries.html. \n\n\n\n\n\nLalande’s presentation will focus on a historic local event that national media took note of. It involved the theft of ballots at the hands of county officials\, resulting in a community response that eventually led to fatal violence. The Medford Mail Tribune\, a newspaper that closed in 2022 after more than 100 years of covering the Rogue Valley\, won a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the event. \n\n\n\nThere is metered parking for in-person attendees in parking lots 1\, 12\, 29\, 36\, 37\, and 41. Those who need disability accommodations can contact SOU’s Disability Resources office at 541-552-6213. \n\n\n\nEmail libraryevents@sou.edu or call 541-552-6816 for more information. \n\n

SUMMARY:John Craigie with guest Bella White presented by the Ashland Folk Collective
DESCRIPTION:Portland-based singer\, songwriter\, and producer John Craigie adapts moments of solitude into stories perfectly suited for old Americana fiction anthologies. \nInstead of leaving them on dog-eared pages\, he projects them widescreen in flashes of simmering soul and folk eloquence. On his 2022 full-length album\, Mermaid Salt\, we witness revenge unfurled in flames\, watch a landlocked mermaid’s escape\, and fall asleep under a meteor shower. \nAfter selling out shows consistently coast-to-coast and earning acclaim from Rolling Stone\, Glide Magazine\, No Depression\, and many more\, his unflinching honesty ties these ten tracks together. \n__ \nTwenty-two-year-old singer/songwriter Bella White has a one-of-a-kind musical talent: a finespun breed of country/folk both fresh in perspective and wholly steeped in bluegrass tradition\, despite her upbringing in the Canadian city of Calgary. Her sophomore album\, Among Other Things (Produced by Jonathan Wilson)\, unfolds with gorgeously textured layers encompassing elements of country\, folk\, indie\, and classic rock.

SUMMARY:Walk into Ashland's Past
DESCRIPTION:Although maybe not as exciting as having an actual “time machine\,” KBO Board member Jeff LaLande (archaeologist and historian) will again offer a “Walk Into Ashland’s Past.” It was over a year ago that Jeff first offered this event.
