SUMMARY:Barry Kraft reads the poetry of Charlotte Mew and Louis MacNeice
DESCRIPTION:Barry Kraft will read poems by Charlotte Mew and Louis MacNeice from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday\, Sept. 28\, at Bloomsbury Books\, 290 E. Main St.\, Ashland. \nPoetry happens\, and keeps on happening. It accumulates. Poets who are published\, say\, during the 1970s in collections bearing titles such as “Today’s Poetry\,” soon find themselves no longer “today’s” poets. \nThe avalanche of new poems doesn’t slow down\, but can leave glistening patches behind. Two such bright patches are poems by Charlotte Mew (1869-1928) and Louis MacNeice (1907-1963). Please join Barry for a shared hour of acquaintance — or reacquaintance — with these two fine poets.

We offer multiple programs to help realize our goal to increase\, protect\, and steward native plants for native pollinators. Our Growing Gardens for Pollinators program encompasses our on-site nursery\, where we propagate native plants to share with the community through donations and plant sales. Seed is packaged and sold or donated to schools\, community gardens\, and other community partners. \n\nPlease expect the first hour or two to be VERY crowded!\nParking is very limited at the sale site. You will find parking on Main Street\, along neighborhood streets\, and in the Umpqua Bank and Civic Center lots. Be prepared to walk a block or two.\nVendors are not able to accept payments for other vendors — please pay for plants in the space they are in.\nNot all vendors take credit cards. If paying in cash\, small bills are always appreciated.\nIf possible\, please bring boxes\, bins\, baskets\, or other containers to carry your plants.\nRestroom facilities will not be available.\nHelpful volunteers will be available to help with plant selection and to load out large purchases.\nVehicles will be able to access the area for pickup after purchase\, but bringing a cart to transport your purchases back to your car is a good idea.\nPollinator Project Rogue Valley will have merchandise for sale (native plant books\, bumble bee books\, yard signs) and donations are always appreciated!\n\n\n\nLocation: Parking lot behind The Pollination Place\, 312 N. Main St.\, Phoenix \nThank you to Mountain Rose Herbs for sponsoring and supporting our nursery and plant sale!

SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Lucretia Weems
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk from Lucretia Weems\, author of “This Wild Life: Heroines in the History of Botany\, 1650-1850.” \nThese are the forgotten stories of a remarkable group of European women. They made tremendous contributions to the world of plants and plant exploration\, overcoming the gender bias and marginalization of their time. Some traveled to India\, some to South America and Africa\, collecting plants unknown beyond their native habitats. Each was a true heroine: brave\, talented and deeply adventurous. \nPlease join us to hear more about the fascinating tales of the Heroines in the History of Botany. Copies of “This Wild Life” will be available for purchase and signing at the event. \nLucretia Weems was classically trained at the UCLA Landscape Architecture program\, is a Jackson County Master Gardener\, and has been designing gardens in the Rogue Valley for over 15 years. SUMMARY:Workshop: Testify to Electrify!
DESCRIPTION:Following on September’s successful Rally for Climate and Clean Air\, the Rogue Climate Action Team is hosting a workshop in advance of the City of Ashland’s public engagement sessions on an emissions standard for new homes in Ashland\, to be held later in October. \nWe’ll be providing updates on the ordinance\, help one another prepare comments for the city’s engagement sessions\, and share about outreach opportunities to make sure the public meetings are well-attended. It will be crucial that Ashland hears from as many community members as possible about what they want to see in this policy\, and why meaningful policy action for climate justice and clean air is essential. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and get support to write your own comment. Light snacks provided.

SUMMARY:Big Ideas: The Future of Ashland’s Schools
DESCRIPTION:Join local experts for a discussion of the future of public schools in Ashland. What does it mean for our community that we have fewer kindergarteners than high school seniors? Where do charter and alternative schools fit in? \nErika Bare\, Assistant Superintendent for the Ashland School District\, has been a proud educator for more than 20 years\, serving in a variety of roles. She grew up in Portland and graduated from the University of Oregon with a Master’s in Education in 2001. Bare dove head first into her career as a special education teacher at the middle school level when her family relocated to Southern Oregon\, and she became a special education teacher on special assignment serving K-12 students. Bare earned her administrative credential in 2012 at Southern Oregon University and transitioned to an administrative role at Ashland High School as assistant principal and then principal. She recently published “Connecting Through Conversation: A Playbook for Talking With Students” with co-author and colleague\, Tiffany Burns. \nEva Skuratowicz\, Ashland School Board Director\, moved to Ashland in 2004 and has two children who attend Ashland schools. She has enjoyed volunteering in their classrooms and assisting with a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Skuratowicz has a doctorate in sociology and is the Director of the Southern Oregon University Research Center. In her research\, she works with local non-profit and governmental organizations and has gained a great deal of knowledge of the Rogue Valley. When she actually has spare time\, she enjoys gardening\, cooking\, hiking and traveling. \nThe monthly Big Ideas discussion series features prominent local experts speaking on relevant and timely issues affecting our community. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Ashland Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Jackson County Library Services.
