SUMMARY:The Storyspinner Journey of the Secret Storyworld by Cynthia Salbato
DESCRIPTION:Learn the 10 steps of the Storyspinner Journey in this interactive exploration of the Secret Storyworld\, a story writing ‘game’ that brings our best stories to life. \nWe begin with an ancient map that underlies all stories. We all can read this map\, even if we can’t quite explain it. This map helps us navigate between two worlds: the invisible world of stories and the visible world these stories create. \nThis map delineates the path to bring our inspired ideas into visible reality. Some call this map the Hero’s Journey. We call it the Storyspinner Journey because it weaves us together with other readers\, writers and creators to rewrite the stories that no longer serve us. \nWe are living through an extraordinary moment in the human story. As creative citizens of this world\, we face environmental\, economic\, and social change at an accelerated pace. We seek powerful new stories to navigate into that more beautiful world that we know is possible. These new stories reside inside each of us\, ready to be shared. In our time together\, we will specifically explore the Storyworld realm of health and fitness and write a story together that will be shared at Superheroes After Dark on July 28 at ScienceWorks Museum. Come help us write the world. \nTHE STORYWORLD is comprised of 12 Storyrealms\, each with its own story landscape\, characters\, and seasons that correspond to the Gregorian calendar and the Storyspinner Journey. The Storyspinner Journey follows the energetic pathway of the Chakras and Sefirot (known as the Tree of Life)\, the path of energy into matter. Storyspinners are invited on a quest into the 12 Storyrealms to find 12 Artifacts that will help change the Story. YOU are a Storyspinner. You can use the monthly storygames of the Storyworld to write a story\, achieve a goal\, and establish a habit in 30 days. \nCynthia Salbato is the co-founder of The Secret Storyworld. Cynthia self-identifies as a Community Experience Architect. From her childhood beginnings organizing small parties\, plays and haunted houses for her neighborhood to present-day orchestration of large-scale parades\, processions and events for her town\, Cynthia’s passion is building community through shared experience. She has worked her community event-building magic in partnership with the Ashland Chamber\, SOU and Rogue Valley Community Television\, SOPTV\, Treehouse Books and Downtown Merchants\, and ASF. \nHer current architecting involves a Storyworld exhibit and Storyworld themed After Dark Parties at ScienceWorks Museum.\nPresenter’s Website: https://secretstoryworld.org \nFREE ADMISSION – 1757 Ashland St.\, Ashland. SUMMARY:The Bad Film Society's salute to Alan Arkin
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to the next Bad Film Society meeting\, held at 6 p.m. Saturday\, August 5\, in The Ashland Elks’ Dungeon. \nTo commemorate Alan Arkin’s recent death\, quite possibly the strangest film ever made\, “The Return of Captain Invincible\,” will be shown. It never played in theaters in the U.S. because days before it was supposed to open in 1983\, the production company went out of business. Arkin stars as a superhero from the 30s and 40s who is forced into retirement by McCarthy-style anti-communist persecution. He is also charged with flying without a proper license and wearing underwear in public. He disappears from the public eye and becomes a fat old alcoholic. Thirty years later\, his arch enemy\, the super-villain Mr. Midnight (Christopher Lee!)\, re-emerges and steals a top-secret super-weapon: The Hypno-Ray. The government asks Captain Invincible to come back\, and the story follows his attempts to return to super-heroing and redeem his reputation\, but can he sober up and remember how to fly again? Plus…it’s a musical…with songs by the guys from THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW!! OMG! \nPrior to the feature\, look for fascinatingly strange shorts\, cartoons\, trailers\, etc.! \nMembers should bring a dish for the potluck dinner starting at 6 p.m. Some bottom feeders just come for the great food! It sure beats dumpster diving! \nThe entrance to the Ashland Elks Dungeon is on Will Dodge Way (the alley between East Main Street and Lithia Way and First and Second streets.) You’ll see the “Elks Dining” sign. The private Elks parking lot will be open for use. To park\, enter on Second Street. A $4 donation is requested to support The Elks and all the good they do.

SUMMARY:Learn the craft of making crossworld puzzles
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to construct your own crossword puzzle? Or just been curious about what goes on inside and outside those boxes? \nAshland.News’ crossword editor Steve Weyer will introduce the process and techniques of crossword construction from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday\, Aug. 10\, at the Ashland library\, 410 Siskiyou Blvd.\, Ashland. The event is open to the public. \nThis second presentation of a two-part series will cover conventions\, software tools\, theme entries\, grid layout\, fill words\, clues\, and publication/sharing. After demoing how easy it is to generate a free-form word puzzle\, Weyer will shift focus to the more interesting world of U.S. newspaper-style\, symmetric crosswords. \nWeyer has been a cruciverbalist (“crossword aficionado”) since the 1990s. Besides solving crosswords\, he teaches crossword courses at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and constructs crosswords for local organizations and submits to national publications. His first New York Times crossword puzzle is scheduled to debut in 2023. \nAshland.News plans to introduce crosswords with locally inspired themes\, answers and clues this Fall. Stay tuned!
