SUMMARY:Author Talk: Love\, Death\, and Penguins in the Galápagos Islands with Midge Raymond
DESCRIPTION:In the 1930s\, three small groups of Europeans settled on the Galápagos island of Floreana\, each with their own hopes and dreams for a new life. \nLess than five years later\, two of them had vanished\, one perished after a shipwreck\, and another died a mysterious death. Meanwhile\, nearly one hundred years later\, scientists are working hard to help protect the endangered penguin population in the Galápagos. In Midge Raymond’s latest novel\, Floreana\, a penguin researcher on Floreana in 2020 finds the hidden\, secret diary of one of the settlers and learns what really happened on the island all those years ago. \nJoin us to learn more about the natural and human history of the Galápagos Islands\, for a reading from Floreana\, and for a chat/Q&A about how this novel was inspired by penguins and an unsolved mystery. \nThis event is free to the public. Copies of Floreana will be made available to purchase.

SUMMARY:SOU Choirs present: "The United States v. We the People"
DESCRIPTION:The SOU Chamber and Concert choirs present their fall concert titled: “The United States v. We the People” directed by Dr. Jerron Jorgensen on Thursday\, December 5\, 2024 at 7:30pm at the SOU Music Recital Hall. \n$15 general admission\, $10 seniors. Free for SOU Faculty\, Staff\, and Students. Free livestream: https://youtube.com/live/R1IoARRJuFs?feature=share \nABOUT THE CONCERT: The generation of outrage and division is a feature—not a flaw—of many systems in which we operate today\, from politics and news to social media and art. In the wake of an exhaustive and divisive election cycle\, United States v. We the People will explore the ways in which others profit from the discord in America. Through the repertoire of some of the leading contemporary choral composers such as Craig Hella Johnson\, Kyle Pederson\, Stanford Scriven\, Karen Marrolli\, and Alice Parker\, we will instead focus on finding common ground and understanding despite our many differences. \nPROGRAM: \nSOU Concert Choir \n“Ahlan Wa Sahlan” by Kyle Pederson \n“Let Us Sing One Another” by Karen Marrolli \n“On the Common Ground” by Alice Parker \nSOU Chamber Choir \n“Let My Silence Grow” by Zachary Moore \n“All of Me” by Kyle Pederson \n“This is the Day” by Stanford Scriven \n“Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius\, arr. Blake Morgan \nSOU Combined Choirs \n“Walk Out On the Water” by Royal Canoe\, arr. Geung Kroeker-Lee \n“All of Us” from Considering Matthew Shepard by Craig Hella Johnson \nSpecial guest: Dr. Mikiko Petrucelli\, pianist

SUMMARY:450 Years in 45 Minutes with Oregon Black Pioneers
DESCRIPTION:People of African descent have lived and worked in Oregon since before the founding of the earliest English-speaking settlements in the Americas. Despite this\, the popular narrative of our state’s history excludes the experiences of African Americans before the mid-20th century. This erasure is the result of historic legal and social marginalization that contributes to the ignorance of Oregon’s Black heritage\, as well as influences contemporary disparities in housing access\, community investment\, and policing. For this presentation\, Oregon Black Pioneers will attempt to correct the record by highlighting key individuals and events that characterize Oregon’s unique and centuries-old Black history. \nTo see this event at other library branches\, visit: https://jcls.libcal.com/calendar/jcls_event?t=d&q=black%20pioneers&cid=3210&cal=3210&inc=0
