SUMMARY:Thinking Like an Ecosystem for Bottom-up Change
DESCRIPTION:This presentation explores how The Understory Initiative’s (TUI) grassroots approach is actively helping to restore native ecosystems in southern Oregon\, including the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. Through collaborative projects like the Rogue Native Plant Partnership and the Upper Rogue Oak Initiative\, we’ll show how involving local communities and prioritizing their knowledge creates more resilient\, thriving landscapes. By thinking like an ecosystem—valuing every part and every voice—we can tackle environmental challenges more effectively. \nKathryn Prive\, Executive Director of TUI\, grew up in Minnesota but has called the West Coast home since 2003. She has a M.S. in population genetics and ecological restoration from Oregon State University and a B.S in Environmental Science from the University of Oregon. Kathryn has expertise in partnership coordination\, population genetics\, ecological restoration\, and botany. She is passionate about native plant community restoration and seed production. \nThe Friday Hike and Learn sessions will take place in the Ashland Food Co-op Community Classroom at 300 N. Pioneer in Ashland from 6:00 to 7:30pm. The classroom is one block toward downtown from the grocery store on N 1st Street. \nFriends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is a nonprofit organization and our mission is to support the protection\, restoration and conservation of the monument through service\, advocacy and education. Our Hike and Learn programs are designed to introduce the public to different topics and locations within the Monument. Hike and Learns are co-created with local scientists\, historians\, artists\, students\, and more. \nCover photo courtesy of the Understory Initiative

SUMMARY:Thinking Like an Ecosystem for Bottom-up Change - Saturday Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:Join The Understory Initiative (TUI) and the Friends of Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument at the Sampson Creek Preserve in Ashland for a volunteer seed cleaning event where you’ll help ensure seeds are ready for grow-outs\, habitat restoration\, or long-term storage. Work alongside fellow plant nerds using basic tools to break up seed pods\, remove chaff\, and separate viable seeds. No experience is needed—just bring your enthusiasm for conservation and enjoy the company! \nAs a founder\, Kathryn’s role at The Understory Initiative is to guide program development and foster greater support for herbaceous plant community restoration in Oregon. \nThe Friends of Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument’s mission is to support the protection\, restoration and conservation of the Monument through service\, advocacy and education. SUMMARY:Jeffrey Foucault presented by the Ashland Folk Collective
DESCRIPTION:In two decades on the road Jeffrey Foucault has become one of the most distinctive voices in American music\, refining a sound instantly recognizable for its simplicity and emotional power. With a string of critically acclaimed studio albums – “Stark\, literate songs that are as wide open as the landscape of his native Midwest” (The New Yorker)\, “Beat-up troubadour folk whittled to dolorous perfection” (Uncut)\, “Songwriting Brilliance\,” (Irish Times) – he’s built a brick-and-mortar international touring career and a devoted following\, one that includes luminaries like Van Dyke Parks\, Greil Marcus\, and Don Henley. \nIn September of 2024 Jeffrey Foucault will release THE UNIVERSAL FIRE (Fluff & Gravy\, 9/6/24)\, his first album of entirely new material since 2018. A series of high-voltage performances cut live in one room\, the album is both a working wake – Foucault lost his best friend and drummer Billy Conway\, to cancer in 2021 – and a meditation on the nature of beauty\, artifact\, and loss. \nAugmenting Foucault’s all-star band with members of Calexico and Bon Iver (drummer John Convertino and producer/saxophonist Mike Lewis) THE UNIVERSAL FIRE sets Conway’s death against the massive 2008 fire at the Universal Studios lot in California that destroyed the master recordings of some of our bedrock American music\, to interrogate ideas about mortality\, legacy\, meaning\, and calling. \nErik Koskinen \nErik Koskinen is an American singer-songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist and producer\, whose music is not categorized by sub-genres. Stylistically he is on his own while heavily influenced by American roots music. The rhythmic integrity and musical tone is as important as the lyrical content and the artistic intent. Koskinen has reverently entered the anthology of uniquely crafted wry songs with the likes of Woody Guthrie and Ry Cooder while speaking as plainly as your neighbor. The Minneapolis Star Tribune calls Koskinen “the real deal” and “The Best country songwriter in Minnesota.” \nDoors 6:00pm | Show 7:00-10:00pm \n$25 online | $30 at the door

SUMMARY:MUSIX: A Musical Harvest
DESCRIPTION:The MUSIX rock band will perform their fall rock concert “A Musical Harvest” Tuesday\, November 5th at 7:30pm at the SOU Music Recital Hall. Directed by Larry Smith. \n$15/ general admission/ $10 seniors. Free for SOU Faculty\, Staff\, and Students. \nAll concerts include repertoire composed and performed by SOU students in the Music Industry & Production Studies program. \nFREE livestream: https://youtube.com/live/vIHih5rjH2w?feature=share \nFREE parking in Lot #36 across from the music building. \nABOUT MUSIX & the MIPS Program at SOU \nStudents in MUSIX are performers\, producers\, composers\, lyricists\, and audio engineers. All of the music you will hear tonight is original. Over the course of every term\, MUSIX members pair up\, or consolidate into sub-groups to create music in a variety of ways. Some who read music will partner with those who intuit music\, and vice-versa. The music is sometimes created through an improvisational\, or “by rote” fashion. Other times it is completely conceived\, written out and prepared by a single individual for further development and rehearsal by a band. The MIP Lab is equipped with session mixers that allow up to 5 players to plug in and monitor themselves while rehearsing. Dr. Terry Longshore\, head of percussion at SOU\, has mentioned gleefully that it is bit like “blissful chaos” when observing the lab full of songwriters\, and two bands rehearsing at the same time in two different keys\, tempos\, and singers – the session mixers allow for near totally isolation through the players’ headphones! \nAll of MUSIX’s compositional approaches\, this music is aimed towards preparing an evening-length concert or to produce audio recordings worthy of release to the masses. Tonight’s concert will feature music from our catalog and several new songs owing to our growing collective of students.

SUMMARY:Rainbow Girls presented by the Ashland Folk Collective
DESCRIPTION:In a world where the line between the living and the dead blurs… \nThis fall\, prepare yourself for a Rainbow Girls show like no other. As the lights dim\, and the fog rolls in\, you’ll step into a realm where shadows dance\, and whispers echo through the night. Welcome to the “Haunting” album release tour—a spine-tingling journey into the unknown. Feel the chill as each note reverberates through the darkness\, see the spectral visions come to life on stage\, and as the music swells\, you’ll find yourself drawn deeper into the abyss. But beware—once you enter\, you may never leave. This isn’t just a show… it’s a journey into the unknown\, where every song beckons you deeper into the shadows. \nKing Dream \nKing Dream is a Bay Area rock ‘n’ roll band helmed by Oakland native Jeremy Lyon\, a lifelong songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who crafts dive bar anthems with heart\, brains and soul. Hard-rocking yet poignant\, his music combines a love for American rock masters like Springsteen and Petty with ‘60s West Coast psychedelia and more contemporary torch-bearers like My Morning Jacket and The War on Drugs — all brought to life by a band of Northern California’s most in-demand players.

Orphic means “beyond ordinary\,” a phrase that characterizes the ensemble and its mission: to commission and premiere new works by today’s most compelling composers; to broaden the audience for contemporary music; and to present concerts that are vibrantly communicative\, musically expressive\, and inspiringly virtuosic—or\, quite simply—extraordinary. \nThe quartet\, formed in 2017\, has gained notoriety both stateside and abroad. Having presented multiple tours in the United States\, as well as tours in both Germany and Austria\, Orphic continues its mission of commissioning new works for Percussion Quartet. To date\, the ensemble has over thirty original compositions to their commissioning credit. \nOrphic’s recent highlights include recital tours in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest\, the world premiere of Stefan Cwik’s Relics: Dances for Percussion Quartet and Orchestra with San Francisco’s Symphony Parnassus (nominated by the San Francisco Classical Voice for “Best New Music Performance” of the 2017-18 season)\, university residencies at Southern Nazarene University (OK) and George Fox University (OR)\, and a return engagement at the Arcata Playhouse (CA). SUMMARY:Full Circle: Turtle Wisdom Concert Premiere featuring Longshore's Music and LaDuke's Artwork at ScienceWorks
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, November 8 from 6-8pm\, percussionist Terry Longshore will premiere his new work for gong orchestra\, Full Circle: Turtle Wisdom at the ScienceWorks Museum in Ashland. Tickets are $10 and available online at https://scienceworksmuseum.org and will also be available for purchase at the door the evening of the event. \nScienceWorks Members and all SOU Faculty\, staff\, and students can get complimentary tickets by emailing: info@scienceworksmuseum.org\, and you will get a coupon code to receive your free ticket. \nThe new work will be performed at two times during the evening – 6:30pm and 7:30pm by the SOU Percussion Ensemble and students of Longshore’s Honors Course – “Making Music”. \nThe inspiration for the work is Betty LaDuke’s Turtle Wisdom – a series of works that features more than 20 colorful turtles as part of the musical score. LaDuke’s artworks will also be on display. \nABOUT THE MUSIC AND ART: \nFull Circle: Turtle Wisdom by Oregon composer and percussionist Terry Longshore draws its inspiration from his 2021 hour-long composition for large solo gong\, This Moment In Time\, and renowned artist Betty LaDuke’s series\, Turtle Wisdom. It is performed by a gong orchestra\, in which at least six and up to an unlimited number of members\, each with their own gong\, interpret one of Betty LaDuke’s Turtle Wisdom series of artworks\, guided by a text- and time-based score composed by Longshore. \nLaDuke’s Turtles explore themes of personal\, political\, and playful nature. Emerging from the pandemic in 2021\, LaDuke states that “TURTLES became my symbolic storytellers\, commenting on the events currently reshaping our lives.” \nThe performers utilize a plethora of implements and techniques to produce a seemingly endless array of sounds from their instruments. Spatialized throughout the performance space\, the audience is encircled by sounds of nature\, by the gongs’ captivating voices\, and by LaDuke’s dynamic artworks. The composition is composed in a way that allows anyone to participate\, regardless of musical or percussive experience. A pre-performance workshop provides participants with instruction on performance practice and score interpretation. \nThe compositional structure of Full Circle: Turtle Wisdom is inspired by the lunar calendar and numerous Indigenous peoples’ belief that turtles’ shells symbolize the 13 lunar cycles. The central area of the upper shell (carapace) displays 13 larger scutes\, each representing a lunar month. Additionally\, the encircling smaller scutes total 28\, corresponding to the days in a lunar cycle. The numbers 13 and 28 are used in rhythmic sections of the composition\, alternating with more lyrical and textural sections highlighted by the playing techniques.
