DESCRIPTION:“Lobo: The Hunted And The Hunter” is based on a true story of an epic encounter that changes a wolf\, a man\, and America forever. \nThe year: 1893. Wolves have been nearly exterminated in North America. In the northern New Mexico territory\, a small pack survives\, preying on local ranchers’ cattle. This pack is led by a smart and cunning wolf that would become known as Lobo. \nDesperate to stop the cunning and intelligent wolf\, the ranchers offer a bounty to anyone who can stop Lobo and his pack. Enter Ernest Thompson Seton: artist\, writer\, naturalist\, and expert wolf hunter. But as Seton hunts Lobo\, he sees a wild west rapidly disappearing\, one that may be lost forever. \n“Lobo: The Hunted And The Hunter” is the retelling of Seton’s classic story “LOBO” and the legacy of his fateful encounter with the wolf\, a legacy that continues to this day. \nRobert Young is the author of 28 books\, most of them middle-grade nonfiction. Topics for his books have ranged from chewing gum to Ellis Island\, from baseball to the dropping of the first atomic bomb. Wolves have been a lifelong interest\, and he came across the story of Lobo and Ernest Thompson Seton while researching these fascinating animals. This book\, Robert’s first graphic novel\, is intended for older readers and adults. His talk will focus on the seven year journey of creating this book. Held 7 to 8 p.m. Monday\, Feb. 5.

This compelling exhibition explores the urgent issues of our time\, delving into the mechanisms of war and colonialism while interrogating the unpredictability and legitimacy of armed conflict. It will be on view through March 23\, 2024. \n“What’s at Stake” sheds light on the devastating impacts of war\, human rights violations\, and environmental collapse\, compelling viewers to pause and reflect on our collective responsibility to one another. The exhibition raises essential questions about the consequences when violence goes unchecked and challenges us to consider what is truly at stake in a world grappling with these pressing issues. \nSMA Executive Director Scott Malbaurn shared\, “During a recent trip to San Francisco with museum members\, we visited solo exhibitions at Catharine Clark Gallery featuring Masami Teraoka\, Al Farrow\, and Zeina Barakeh. Recognizing the common theme of exploring the impact of war\, especially for artists raised in wartime milieus like Teraoka and Barakeh alongside the sculpture of Al Farrow\, which are assembled with war time munitions\, we decided to present these shows collectively as “What’s at Stake.” This group exhibition becomes a poignant question and statement\, resonating with contemporary violent events that seem to be happening all of the time globally.” \nAn opening reception will take place 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11. Curator Catharine Clark and select artists will be in attendance. The opening reception is free and open to the public; complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres will be provided. The Museum will be closed on Saturday\, Jan. 13 for a private event. \nNew Masterworks on Loan and Highlights from the Permanent Collection will also be on view in the Entry Gallery. SUMMARY:Big Ideas: Get to Know BASE (Black Alliance and Social Empowerment)
DESCRIPTION:Join BASE Board President Sabrina Prud’homme for a discussion of the group’s goals. Prud’homme will introduce event-goers to BASE\, its exciting programs\, and the strategies BASE employs to uplift and empower black residents\, especially children\, in the Rogue Valley and beyond. \nSabrina Prud’homme is the university board secretary and strategic advisor to the Board of Trustees of Southern Oregon University. A governance professional\, Sabrina works to ensure that the governing Board of Trustees maintains compliance with laws and regulations. She serves as a strategic advisor to the board\, and she acts as the board’s liaison with campus and community members. She is a member of the National Council of Board Professionals and has led numerous sessions on board-building\, organizational leadership\, and other governance topics. \nCommitted to education both in her work and in her spare time\, Ms. Prud’homme is completing her second term as an elected director on the Ashland School Board for the Ashland School District (ASD). She also is a member of the Oregon School Board Association’s School Board Members of Color Caucus\, and the ASD Budget Committee\, and she previously served on the board of the Ashland Schools Foundation. \nSabrina currently serves as the inaugural board chair of the BASE (Black Alliance and Social Empowerment) organization. She is also a member of the Police Liaison Oversight Committee dedicated to improving anti-bias efforts and community relations among local black residents in partnership with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and the police chiefs of Ashland\, Central Point\, Medford\, Phoenix\, and Talent. \nThe monthly Big Ideas discussion series features prominent local experts speaking on relevant and timely issues affecting our community. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Ashland Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Jackson County Library Services.

We’ll unpack what this new form of intelligence really is\, exploring its capabilities\, potential trajectories\, and near-term implications. \nThis exploration is particularly crucial for creatives\, across all domains\, many of whose day-to-day lives have already been profoundly impacted. You’ll leave with a nuanced understanding of how generative AI works\, and steps you can take to shape its impact in your life. \nWe will discuss this topic from several angles:\n• Comparing Human vs. AI Creativity: Understanding the relative strengths and weaknesses is key to knowing where and how to spend time\n• Cyborg and Centaur Styles: Understanding the difference between periodic augmentation of human capabilities with AI (Centaur) versus integrating AI into our fundamental approach (Cyborg).\n• Multimodal AI Interactions: Exploring how AI interfaces through text\, speech\, and visuals\, and how these modalities shape our interaction with technology.\n• AI as a Serendipity Engine: Uncovering how generative AI\, with its instant and vast reach\, can help us manifest unexpected\, beneficial discoveries and ideas in various fields.\n• Leveling Up Your Metacognition: Demonstrating how the very act of developing the skills needed to work effectively with AI will accelerate self-awareness and mental mastery\n• Practical Experiments: We’ll conclude with a hands-on segment\, “10 Things to Try at Home\,” offering practical ways you can engage with generative AI in your day-to-day activities\, for new superpowers as well as understanding of this alien intelligence. \nThor Muller has made a career out of guiding people\, communities\, and companies through technological transitions. As co-creator and director of the AI prompt engineering practice at Mach49\, a global company helping large organizations incubate their own startups. In his role\, Thor works with AI experts researching and developing new ways for AI to enhance the creativity and effectiveness of teams. \nAs the co-founder of the Rogue Valley AI Lab (RV/AI)\, Thor works to nurture a growing community of our region’s AI practitioners\, enthusiasts\, and curiosity-seekers with bi-weekly sessions open to all. Partnering with local institutions like SOU and Scienceworks\, RV/AI aims to wisely integrate AI into local communities in ways that promote health and wellbeing. RV/AI offers opportunities for people to learn about\, find work\, conduct independent research\, and build businesses with generative AI. \nThor is also known for co-authoring the NY Times best-seller “Get Lucky: How to Put Planned Serendipity to Work for You and Your Business.” The book shows how serendipity is a skill of “discovering things that you didn’t know you were looking for\,” and why this is a fundamental driver of creative pursuits. Drawing from his experiences as an entrepreneur and creative\, “Get Lucky” outlines eight concrete methods that can be used to increase the presence of serendipity in work\, art\, and play. \nWith over 30 years in technology and entrepreneurship\, Thor has founded\, advised\, and built numerous companies. SUMMARY:Losar\, the Tibetan New Year
DESCRIPTION:Tibetan New Year is celebrated in early February this year. To honor Losar\, we practice a meditation of cutting through obstacles. This clears the energy of the old year\, to make space for a fresh start. \nOur Losar meditations are Mahakala\, a fierce expression of loving kindness and compassion\, followed by Chenrezig\, a peaceful expression of loving kindness and compassion. These companion practices offer a balance of methods to lift the suffering of beings. \nLama Yeshe will lead the two practices\, opening each with a short talk about Losar and the practices themselves. Mahakala will be done in chanted Tibetan; Condensed Chenrezig will be done in English. \nAll are welcome to attend either or both of the meditations. For those who attend in person\, you are invited to bring contributions of non-perishable foods to benefit the Talent Food Bank\, and also clothing and warm camping gear for the “In the Warm” project. \nMay we all join in clearing obstacles from the past\, to welcome in a new year! \nPlease contact the office if you need the Zoom link: office@kscashland.org

This compelling exhibition explores the urgent issues of our time\, delving into the mechanisms of war and colonialism while interrogating the unpredictability and legitimacy of armed conflict. It will be on view through March 23\, 2024. \n“What’s at Stake” sheds light on the devastating impacts of war\, human rights violations\, and environmental collapse\, compelling viewers to pause and reflect on our collective responsibility to one another. The exhibition raises essential questions about the consequences when violence goes unchecked and challenges us to consider what is truly at stake in a world grappling with these pressing issues. \nSMA Executive Director Scott Malbaurn shared\, “During a recent trip to San Francisco with museum members\, we visited solo exhibitions at Catharine Clark Gallery featuring Masami Teraoka\, Al Farrow\, and Zeina Barakeh. Recognizing the common theme of exploring the impact of war\, especially for artists raised in wartime milieus like Teraoka and Barakeh alongside the sculpture of Al Farrow\, which are assembled with war time munitions\, we decided to present these shows collectively as “What’s at Stake.” This group exhibition becomes a poignant question and statement\, resonating with contemporary violent events that seem to be happening all of the time globally.” \nAn opening reception will take place 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11. Curator Catharine Clark and select artists will be in attendance. The opening reception is free and open to the public; complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Embark on a winter adventure! Join BLM interpretive rangers on a snowshoe hike through the enchanting old-growth conifer forest at Hyatt Lake Recreation Area. Suitable for ages 12 and up\, these Saturday excursions offer a unique opportunity to explore the biodiversity of a stunning winter landscape. \nRangers will interpret winter adaptations of plants and animals\, animal tracks and signs\, the basics of snow science\, and the environment that hides beneath the snow. Lace up your boots and join us for an unforgettable journey into nature! Snowshoes and poles are provided free-of-cost by the BLM. \nWe will meet at 9 a.m. at the Rite Aid in Ashland and make our way into the Monument from there. Carpooling is optional. DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon University’s Schneider Museum of Art (SMA) reopens at 5 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11\, 2024\, with a new exhibition\, “What’s at Stake.” \nCurated by Catharine Clark\, owner and founding director of Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco\, this exhibition will feature artists Zeina Barakeh\, Al Farrow\, and Masami Teraoka. This compelling exhibition explores the urgent issues of our time\, delving into the mechanisms of war and colonialism while interrogating the unpredictability and legitimacy of armed conflict. It will be on view through March 23\, 2024. \n“What’s at Stake” sheds light on the devastating impacts of war\, human rights violations\, and environmental collapse\, compelling viewers to pause and reflect on our collective responsibility to one another. The exhibition raises essential questions about the consequences when violence goes unchecked and challenges us to consider what is truly at stake in a world grappling with these pressing issues. \nSMA Executive Director Scott Malbaurn shared\, “During a recent trip to San Francisco with museum members\, we visited solo exhibitions at Catharine Clark Gallery featuring Masami Teraoka\, Al Farrow\, and Zeina Barakeh. Recognizing the common theme of exploring the impact of war\, especially for artists raised in wartime milieus like Teraoka and Barakeh alongside the sculpture of Al Farrow\, which are assembled with war time munitions\, we decided to present these shows collectively as “What’s at Stake.” This group exhibition becomes a poignant question and statement\, resonating with contemporary violent events that seem to be happening all of the time globally.” \nAn opening reception will take place 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11. Curator Catharine Clark and select artists will be in attendance. The opening reception is free and open to the public; complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres will be provided. The Museum will be closed on Saturday\, Jan. 13 for a private event. \nNew Masterworks on Loan and Highlights from the Permanent Collection will also be on view in the Entry Gallery. Museum hours will be Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is always free\, but a $5 donation is suggested. \nWhat:\nSchneider Museum of Art presents: “What’s at Stake \nFree\, and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:The focus of this one-hour hatha yoga class is to increase strength\, flexibility and balance while simultaneously alleviating stress and fatigue.  Additional benefits of regular yoga practice include an overall sense of well-being and an increase in self-awareness and self-acceptance.  Participants must be aware of their own capabilities in order to participate safely.  Ability to get up and down from the floor is required.  Each class will conclude with deep relaxation.
