SUMMARY:History & Ecology of Fire in the Monument - Friday Night Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join the dynamic and knowledgeable Rich Fairbanks as he shares the history and ecology of fire in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. \nHe will discuss both modern and indigenous management practices\, informed by his own personal experience and consultation from indigenous people who gave him permission to share. He also will take us on an historic journey through the Klamathon and Oregon Gulch fires within the Monument and introduce us to the response of plants to fire and how to recognize fire scars. Through his lecture\, we will learn enough about fire behavior to understand how fire has shaped the Monument in big ways and the need for more funding to be directed toward the proper protection and stewardship of its resources. \nRich Fairbanks has a wealth of knowledge and interesting stories through his work with the U.S. Forest Service for 32 years in fire management\, planning\, and silviculture. He held various positions in the organization\, including Interagency Hotshot Crew Foreman\, Division Supervisor and ID Team leader for the Biscuit Fire Recovery Project. For five years\, he also worked for The California Fire Program of the Wilderness Society. Rich has a degree in forestry and holds a Master’s degree in planning. He currently owns a small forest management company. He and his wife live in the mixed conifer forest of the Applegate where they do a considerable amount of under burning. \nThe Friday Hike and Learn sessions will take place in the Ashland Food Co-op Community Classroom at 300 N. Pioneer in Ashland from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The classroom is one block toward downtown from the grocery store on North First Street. \nFriends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is a nonprofit organization\, and our mission is to support the protection\, restoration and conservation of the monument through service\, advocacy\, and education. Our Hike and Learn programs are designed to introduce the public to different topics and locations within the Monument. Hike and Learns are co-created with local scientists\, historians\, artists\, students\, and more.

SUMMARY:The Ghost Forest: Racists\, Radicals\, and Real Estate in the California Redwoods with author Greg King
DESCRIPTION:“The Ghost Forest” provides the entire history of redwood logging and protection efforts\, from the mid-19th century to the beginning of the 21st century. \nI tell this story as a journalist and historian\, but also as an activist: In 1986 I quit my reporter’s job to spearhead the fight to save the last islands of ancient redwoods still in private hands. In 1987 I discovered and named 3\,000-acre Headwaters Forest\, then the largest ancient redwood grove still standing outside of parks. \nGreg King\nPresident/Executive Director\nSiskiyou Land Conservancy \n“The Ghost Forest is the book I’ve long wished someone would write\, and Greg King has done it luminously well. He tells the epic story of the destruction of 96% of the primeval redwoods in California—including the criminal and bankrupt horrors of ‘liquidation logging’ done in the 1980s and 90s by corporate raider Charles Hurwitz and the Maxxam Corporation. And he tells the story of activists and protesting tree climbers (including himself) who put their lives on the line to save the Headwaters Forest Reserve\, a jewel of the redwood realm.” — Richard Preston\, author of “The Wild Trees” and “The Hot Zone” \nHeld 7 to 8 p.m. Friday\, Nov. 8.

SUMMARY:Rogue World wassailing open rehearsals
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to sing for fun? Have you ever wanted to discover your singing voice? Rehearse with us for Rogue World Wassailing this Dec. 1 and 16! \nRehearsals are held 2 to 4 p.m. Saturdays\, Oct. 28 to Nov. 25\, at Aryze Hot Yoga Studio\, 330 Oak St.\, Ashland. \nRuth Hoffecker\, of Ashland School of Uncovering the Voice\, brings her two major passions together for this project: traditional folk songs that celebrate the turning of the seasons and creating a singing community where all people feel welcome. Folk traditions like Wassailing were born out of a time when all people sang as part of daily life. We invite you to come experience singing in community\, lifting each other up with our voices\, making a joyful noise! \nWe will meet for five weeks to learn winter\, Christmas\, New Year’s and traditional Wassailing songs. Each session will begin with gentle exercises to warm up our voices.\nWith music in our hearts and rhythms in our feet\, we will serenade the community\, first in two public street events\, and later going door to door offering blessings of health and happiness for the New Year. \nAll singing experience levels are welcome – including folks who have always thought ‘I can’t sing.’ \nAll ages are welcome. All voices are welcome. Participation levels of all types are welcome. (Singing everything\, singing just the choruses\, clapping along\, humming\, etc.) \nYou don’t have to attend every rehearsal. Attend as many or as few as you’d like. \nParticipation is free.

SUMMARY:Rebecca Gabriel (artist extraordinaire and former Bloomsbury employee) will be signing her book “Appearances."
DESCRIPTION:In creating these new works\, I fortunately am able to incorporate the best of two worlds. I combine my “Old Master” egg tempera and oil painting technique with digital printing\, collage\, and high flow paint. I also merge my proclivity for realism and control with my pension for multiple interpretations and chance. My intention is for a synergy to occur between tradition and experimentation\, perhaps resulting in a fresh and unique perspective. \nIn creating portraits\, I am acutely aware of the many aspects of individuals-both overt and mysterious. Moods are in constant flux\, and each of us is challenged by circumstance. My hope is that these portraits honor these many complexities\, as they honor those I have been able to portray. \nHeld 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday\, Nov. 11 – signing only

SUMMARY:Viv & Riley presented by the Ashland Folk Collective
DESCRIPTION:A bittersweet nostalgia lies at the heart of Imaginary People\, the new album from Viv & Riley\, coming Sept. 15\, 2023 on Free Dirt Records. \nOver ten tracks\, the pair applies an indie roots sheen to newly composed pop gems. Rooted originally in the folk tradition\, the pair reframe the production into experimental territory\, crafting songs that speak to finding a path forward into adulthood in an uncertain world. Gifted songwriters and multi-instrumentalists\, Vivian Leva and Riley Calcagno’s first album under the name Viv & Riley is a subtle masterpiece of thought and reflection. Based out of Durham\, North Carolina\, they’ve tapped into the area’s eclectic and collaborative music scene\, recruiting Alex Bingham of Hiss Golden Messenger to produce the album. Bingham brings a sunny\, lush sound to Viv & Riley’s music\, moving beyond their earlier country roots and toward a layered sound and sonic experimentation. The songwriting has evolved as well\, from the world-weary\, stripped-down country songs they’re known for to indie songwriting at turns sweetly sad and gently sardonic. \nUltimately\, Imaginary People is about carrying and honoring our pasts\, about letting that inform our new steps forward. No matter how much we might cling to where we are\, sometimes we need to uproot and take a leap of faith\, to open ourselves up to new experiences and ideas in order to grow and blossom.

SUMMARY:Higher Education – Lower Expectations?
DESCRIPTION:Is higher education in trouble? What are the functions and values of traditional higher education – colleges and universities — in an era with so many alternatives? How much should colleges cater to job requirements\, the pursuit of bigger salaries\, and garnering credentials? Should higher education aim to lead students toward the best in human achievement and creativity? Is it all wasted on the young\, or is the cost simply too high? \nThe Jefferson Center invites members and guests to discuss these and related themes from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday\, Nov. 12 at The Jefferson Center\, in the Historic Ashland Armory\, 208 Oak St.\, Ashland. \nThe discussion will be facilitated by Joseph Graf\, Jefferson Center Board member and former Dean of Sciences at Southern Oregon University. Serving as resources to aid our discussion of these broad topics will be Charles Lane and Steve Thorpe\, former faculty members and administrators at a number of private and public institutions in Oregon\, Texas\, Hawaii and California. \nLight refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. It is part of the Salon series of The Jefferson Center\, a Rogue Valley nonprofit focused on critical thinking using secular humanist values to understand and engage with issues important to our community.

SUMMARY:"The Village Healer’s Book of Cures\," a novel by Jennifer Sherman Roberts
DESCRIPTION:In 17th-century England\, a female healer inflames the fury of a witchfinder in this propulsive novel about murder\, revenge\, and the dangerous power of knowledge. \nMary Fawcett refines the healing recipes she’s inherited from generations of women before her—an uncanny and moral calling to empathize with the sick. When witchfinder Matthew Hopkins arrives in her small village\, stoking the fires of hate\, he sees not healing but the devil at work. Mary’s benevolent skills have now cast her and her young brother under suspicion of witchery. Soon\, the husband of one of Mary’s patients is found murdered. For Hopkins\, it’s further evidence of dark arts. When the whispering village turns against her\, Mary dares to trust a stranger: an enigmatic alchemist\, scarred body and soul\, who knows the dead man’s secrets. \nAuthor Jennifer Sherman Roberts holds a PhD in Renaissance literature from the University of Minnesota. She became interested in early modern recipes and recipe books as she researched the medicinal properties of folk cures. She has written about early modern recipes on the academic blog The Recipes Project\, and she has worked with Oregon Humanities facilitating conversation projects about the historical roots and cultural implications of the recipe genre. She is also a fierce library advocate\, occasional knitter\, and aspiring mead maker who lives in southern Oregon\, where the mountains are tall\, the lakes crystal clear\, and the beer hoppy. \nHeld 7 to 8 p.m. Monday\, Nov. 13.

SUMMARY:Barry Kraft Explores the First Folio
DESCRIPTION:Barry Kraft explores the First Folio of William Shakespeare’s plays—the first collected edition published in 1623\, 7½ years after Shakespeare’s death. \nFolio editions were large and expensive books that were seen as prestige items. SUMMARY:What is the Next Technological Frontier with Gerry Paschen
DESCRIPTION:Humanity is in a crucial moment of transition. The climate crisis is real. Issues of renewable energy are among the things we need to consider for a sustainable future. What technological issues regarding our generation\, distribution\, storage\, and conservation of electrical power must we prioritize at this moment? \nTechnological pioneers Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla have given us prosperity in the past with their numerous innovations\, inventions\, and patents over many decades\, from 1870 to 1940. \nLooking forward\, what innovative opportunities does the 21st century hold? How will we meet the world’s increasing need for efficient\, low carbon energy generation and distribution? \nWill Elon Musk with his enterprises help give us a secure future? Or should we put more trust in the corporate media and our elected administrators? \nDrawing from his experience and expertise as a Master Electrician and the inventor of an electric car in 1970\, Jerry Paschen will share his thought-provoking insights and ideas about quintessential questions that concern us all. Born in Berlin in 1938 and immigrating to Canada when he was 19\, Paschen has been fascinated with all matters electrical since he was a teenager\, earning his Master Electrician license in 1966. \nActive in public service while in Canada\, Jerry served on the Board of the Archaeological Society for 16 years\, and on the Provincial Government Environmental Board’s “Environmental Council” for 20 years\, proposing resolutions to the Minister of the Environment. He ran at least 16 times for civic\, provincial\, and federal elections for the Green Party\, and in 1982 was almost elected into the Cabinet. \nJerry and his wife Betty have been community members of Ashland\, Oregon for over 40 years. They bought a city lot in Ashland in 1982\, built a house and returned every winter thereafter as snowbirds. In 2003 Jerry and Betty raised $1.2 million among 60 share-holders and erected an industrial wind turbine. He and his son Syd installed numerous photovoltaic installations in Alberta\, including at the Cold Lake Airport and on Native reservations\, both on and off-grid. At present\, Jerry and his group have six anemometer stations in the Rogue Valley registering wind speeds. \nFREE ADMISSION – 1757 Ashland St.\, Ashland\, OR. One mile west of I-5 Exit 14
