Babayan himself has observed that making music should be open to surprises and spontaneous insights\, allowing unexpected emotions to emerge and subtle shadings to evolve naturally. \nSergei Babayan has collaborated with such conductors as Sir Antonio Pappano\, David Robertson\, Neeme Järvi\, Rafael Payare\, Thomas Dausgaard\, Tugan Sokhiev\, and Dima Slobodeniouk. Over the years\, Babayan has performed with Valery Gergiev numerous times to great critical acclaim\, including appearances at the Barbican Centre with the London Symphony Orchestra\, at the Théâtre des Champs-Elyseés in Paris\, the Salzburg Festival\, and at the Rotterdam Philharmonic-Gergiev Festival\, where Babayan was artist-in-residence. \nIn recent seasons\, Mr. Babayan’s schedule included concert performances with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra\, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra\, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic\, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France\, Mahler Chamber Orchestra\, Toronto Symphony\, Vancouver Symphony\, and the Verbier Festival Orchestra\, among others. Sergei Babayan regularly performs at many of the world’s most prestigious venues\, including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw\, Carnegie Hall\, London’s Wigmore Hall\, the Vienna Konzerthaus and Munich’s Prinzregententheater\, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires\, the Maison de la Radio in Paris\, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie\, Alte Oper Frankfurt\, and the Zurich Tonhalle. He has appeared at major festivals including La Roque d’Anthéron\, Piano aux Jacobins in Toulouse\, Gstaad Menuhin Festival\, and Verbier Festival. At Konzerthaus Dortmund\, Sergei Babayan was a Curating Artist. Mr. Babayan performs with the world’s foremost orchestras\, including the London Symphony Orchestra\, Cleveland Orchestra\, Warsaw Philharmonic\, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra\, Orchestre National de Lille\, Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. \nSergei Babayan is a Deutsche Grammophon exclusive artist; his latest release ‘Rachmaninoff’ (DG 2020) was hailed by the international press as a groundbreaking recording and received numerous awards including BBC Recording of the Month and CHOC Classica (‘This musical journey\, born out of a limitless imagination and thought in minute detail\, is one big masterpiece.’) His previous DG release of his own transcriptions for two pianos of works by Sergei Prokofiev\, with Martha Argerich as his partner (‘Prokofiev for Two’; DG 2018)\, was praised by reviewers as ‘the CD one has waited for’ (Le Devoir)\, an ‘electrifying duo that leaves the listener in consternation’ (Pianiste). Mr. Babayan’s performances have been broadcast by Radio France\, BBC-TV and BBC Radio 3\, NHK Satellite Television and Medici TV. \nBorn in Armenia into a musical family\, Babayan began his studies there with Georgy Saradjev and continued at the Moscow Conservatory with Mikhail Pletnev\, Vera Gornostayeva and Lev Naumov. Following his first trip outside of the USSR in 1989\, he won consecutive first prizes in several major international competitions including the Cleveland International Piano Competition\, the Hamamatsu Piano Competition\, and the Scottish International Piano Competition. An American citizen\, he lives in New York City.

DESCRIPTION:Although maybe not as exciting as having an actual “time machine\,” Klamath Bird Observatory board member Jeff LaLande (archaeologist and historian) will again offer a “Walk Into Ashland’s Past.” It was more than a year ago that Jeff first offered this event. It proved to be very popular. \nYou will walk through the site of the Shasta Indians’ village\, where the Plaza is now\, and through the town’s changes — from initial settlement by White Americans in the 1850s to the present time. This history walk is meant to enrich your own experience of the town. (Plus\, all of your $$$ go to KBO!) \nChoose to join one of the two “history walks”: Oct. 7 and Oct. 14. Both walks will follow the same route\, each lasting about three hours. The walk will be followed by the enjoyment of your choice of a “cheerful beverage” and snack at a downtown eatery — Jeff is picking up the tab. \nWhen: Saturday\, October 7th and October 14th\, 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM\nWhere: We will meet outside the front of the Ashland Library (near the statue at the intersection of Siskiyou Blvd. and Gresham St. We’ll spend time moseying along East Main Street and along North Main Street to Laurel\, then we’ll walk through the Granite St./Skidmore neighborhood\, and end at the Plaza.\nMax. number of people for each history walk: 18\nDonation per person: $75

This insatiable stylistic diversity is obvious in his wildly raucous live performances\, where songs range from sardonic trucker-ballads like “Vanlife” to the heartbreaking queer waltz “Life on the Fence\,” to an existential talkin’ blues about a panic attack in Walmart’s aisle five. With guitar\, fiddle\, button-box\, banjo\, harmonicas\, rhythm-bones\, and Willi’s booming baritone\, this is bonafide populist folk music in the tradition of cowboys\, frontier fiddlers\, and tall-tale tellers. Carlisle recognizes that the only thing holding us back from greatness is each other. With a quick wit and big sing-alongs\, these folksongs bring us a step closer to breaking down our divides. \nOriginally from Chicago\, Rachel Baiman moved to Nashville at eighteen\, and has spent the last decade working as a musician in a wide variety of roles\, from session musician (Molly Tuttle\, Kelsey Waldon\, Caroline Spence)\, to live sidewoman (Kacey Musgraves\, Amy Ray)\, to bandmate and producer. Fiddle music was her first love\, and she is known in the bluegrass and old time world for her work with progressive acoustic duo 10 String Symphony with fiddle player Christian Sedelmyer. Her first solo album\, Shame\, was produced by Andrew Marlin of Mandolin Orange\, and established her role as part of a new generation of political songwriters.

It will start with a salmon bake — plates are $8\, cash only; no charge for Elders. SOU alumna Lupe Sims — a descendent of the White Mountain Apache Tribe — will deliver opening acknowledgements\, followed by an honor song\, performed by Screaming Eagle (the Jackson family of Klamath Falls.) David West\, a citizen of the Potawatomi Nation and director emeritus of SOU’s Native American Studies Department\, will deliver the opening prayer. Ed Little Crow will offer a traditional meal blessing. \nSOU provost Susan Walsh will read a land acknowledgment\, and SOU president Rick Bailey will share remarks during the formal flag dedication. \nThe celebration will continue with remarks from revered Tribal Elders; Oregon State Rep. Tawna Sanchez\, D-Portland (Shoshone-Bannock\, Ute\, and Carrizo); Terry Cross\, member of the Seneca Nation and founder and senior advisor of the National Indian Child Welfare Association; and Shane Lopez-Johnston\, member of the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation\, who will represent Native American Rehabilitation Association Northwest. The speakers will address continued stewardship of voices for equality within – and in support of – Indigenous communities. \nSOU student-driven initiatives during the event will include a formal dedication of Oregon’s nine federally recognized Tribes\, to be led by David West and Ed Little Crow\, with appointed Tribal Council and/or Tribal community member dignitaries from each of the nine Tribes. \nThe Klamath Tribes Youth Council will share a cultural presentation and community round dance\, and stand in support of the Tribal youth presenting from the Ashland School District’s Native American Student Unions. SUMMARY:Windows in Time: The Tumultuous “Jackson County Rebellion:” One Historian’s Personal Perspective
DESCRIPTION:During the early 1930s — the “worst hard times” of the early Great Depression — Jackson County experienced a political convulsion of political extremism. Two local demagogues relentlessly issued reckless (and untrue) charges and baseless accusations in their newspapers during the early Depression. Their campaign to wrest control of county government away from the local establishment successfully stoked resentment and anger among hard-pressed residents. Now known as the “Jackson County Rebellion\,” this dramatic episode gained Southern Oregon unwanted negative attention nationally. It ended in ballot theft and murder. Historian Jeff LaLande\, who has authored the book “The Jackson County Rebellion: A Populist Uprising in Depression-Era Oregon\,” will discuss past events\, as well as how he came to be interested in them and eventually came to write a book about what occurred in Jackson County. If attendees have read LaLande’s book before attending the program\, they will have the opportunity to pose questions and give comments to the presenter. \nJeff LaLande has been a resident of the Rogue Valley for over fifty-five years. He graduated from Georgetown University in Washington\, D.C.\, and later received his M.A. in archaeology from Oregon State University and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Oregon. He worked for more than thirty years with the U.S. Forest Service as an archaeologist and historian and has published articles and several books on regional history. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Attendees of this joyful celebration of Ashland’s caring spirit will choose a bowl made by local potters and have it filled with soups donated by local restaurants. \nThe soups are served by people prominent in Ashland. Among them this year will be City Council member Gina Duquenne\, Oregon Shakespeare Festival Artistic Director Tim Bond\, and Ashland.news Executive Editor Bert Etling. There will also be donated bread and homemade cookies. \nCost is $25\, students $15\, and under 12 free. Tickets may be purchased on-line HERE or at the door.
