SUMMARY:Big Ideas: The Future of Ashland’s Schools
DESCRIPTION:Join local experts for a discussion of the future of public schools in Ashland. What does it mean for our community that we have fewer kindergarteners than high school seniors? Where do charter and alternative schools fit in? \nErika Bare\, Assistant Superintendent for the Ashland School District\, has been a proud educator for more than 20 years\, serving in a variety of roles. She grew up in Portland and graduated from the University of Oregon with a Master’s in Education in 2001. Bare dove head first into her career as a special education teacher at the middle school level when her family relocated to Southern Oregon\, and she became a special education teacher on special assignment serving K-12 students. Bare earned her administrative credential in 2012 at Southern Oregon University and transitioned to an administrative role at Ashland High School as assistant principal and then principal. She recently published “Connecting Through Conversation: A Playbook for Talking With Students” with co-author and colleague\, Tiffany Burns. \nEva Skuratowicz\, Ashland School Board Director\, moved to Ashland in 2004 and has two children who attend Ashland schools. She has enjoyed volunteering in their classrooms and assisting with a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Skuratowicz has a doctorate in sociology and is the Director of the Southern Oregon University Research Center. In her research\, she works with local non-profit and governmental organizations and has gained a great deal of knowledge of the Rogue Valley. When she actually has spare time\, she enjoys gardening\, cooking\, hiking and traveling. \nThe monthly Big Ideas discussion series features prominent local experts speaking on relevant and timely issues affecting our community. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Ashland Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Jackson County Library Services.

But what does it mean when Ashland now has fewer kindergartners than high schoolers – and where do charter/alternative schools fit in? \n“The Future of Ashland Schools” is a free public discussion planned for 4 to 5:30 Tuesday\, Oct. 3\, in the Gresham Room at Ashland Library\, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Part of the “Big Ideas” program series\, it is presented by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Ashland Branch and Jackson County Library Services. \nThe speakers are Eva Skuratowicz\, Ashland School Board director\, and Erika Bare\, Assistant Superintendent\, Ashland School District (ASD). They will discuss how the District is planning for a future with fewer students and how having fewer families with children in the community has far-reaching impacts that go well beyond our schools. The speakers look forward to learning from the audience as they discuss how this issue is shaping Ashland. \nAs Assistant Superintendent\, Erika Bare\, M.Ed.\, oversees special education\, counseling and behavioral health\, social emotional learning\, and elementary programs in the city. She has worked in education for 20 years\, first as a middle school special education teacher and\, since 2012\, as an Assistant Principal and Principal at Ashland High School. Bare recently published “Connecting Through Conversation: A Playbook for Talking with Students” with co-author and colleague Tiffany Burns. \nDr. Eva Skuratowicz has served on the Ashland School Board since 2009 and has two daughters who graduated from the Ashland public schools. Babayan himself has observed that making music should be open to surprises and spontaneous insights\, allowing unexpected emotions to emerge and subtle shadings to evolve naturally. \nSergei Babayan has collaborated with such conductors as Sir Antonio Pappano\, David Robertson\, Neeme Järvi\, Rafael Payare\, Thomas Dausgaard\, Tugan Sokhiev\, and Dima Slobodeniouk. Over the years\, Babayan has performed with Valery Gergiev numerous times to great critical acclaim\, including appearances at the Barbican Centre with the London Symphony Orchestra\, at the Théâtre des Champs-Elyseés in Paris\, the Salzburg Festival\, and at the Rotterdam Philharmonic-Gergiev Festival\, where Babayan was artist-in-residence. \nIn recent seasons\, Mr. Babayan’s schedule included concert performances with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra\, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra\, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic\, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France\, Mahler Chamber Orchestra\, Toronto Symphony\, Vancouver Symphony\, and the Verbier Festival Orchestra\, among others. Sergei Babayan regularly performs at many of the world’s most prestigious venues\, including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw\, Carnegie Hall\, London’s Wigmore Hall\, the Vienna Konzerthaus and Munich’s Prinzregententheater\, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires\, the Maison de la Radio in Paris\, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie\, Alte Oper Frankfurt\, and the Zurich Tonhalle. He has appeared at major festivals including La Roque d’Anthéron\, Piano aux Jacobins in Toulouse\, Gstaad Menuhin Festival\, and Verbier Festival. At Konzerthaus Dortmund\, Sergei Babayan was a Curating Artist. Mr. Babayan performs with the world’s foremost orchestras\, including the London Symphony Orchestra\, Cleveland Orchestra\, Warsaw Philharmonic\, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra\, Orchestre National de Lille\, Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. \nSergei Babayan is a Deutsche Grammophon exclusive artist; his latest release ‘Rachmaninoff’ (DG 2020) was hailed by the international press as a groundbreaking recording and received numerous awards including BBC Recording of the Month and CHOC Classica (‘This musical journey\, born out of a limitless imagination and thought in minute detail\, is one big masterpiece.’) His previous DG release of his own transcriptions for two pianos of works by Sergei Prokofiev\, with Martha Argerich as his partner (‘Prokofiev for Two’; DG 2018)\, was praised by reviewers as ‘the CD one has waited for’ (Le Devoir)\, an ‘electrifying duo that leaves the listener in consternation’ (Pianiste). Mr. Babayan’s performances have been broadcast by Radio France\, BBC-TV and BBC Radio 3\, NHK Satellite Television and Medici TV. \nBorn in Armenia into a musical family\, Babayan began his studies there with Georgy Saradjev and continued at the Moscow Conservatory with Mikhail Pletnev\, Vera Gornostayeva and Lev Naumov. Following his first trip outside of the USSR in 1989\, he won consecutive first prizes in several major international competitions including the Cleveland International Piano Competition\, the Hamamatsu Piano Competition\, and the Scottish International Piano Competition. An American citizen\, he lives in New York City.

DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Talent Harvest Festival will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday\, Oct. 7\, in downtown Talent\, according to a news release. \nThe event will feature “a colorful array of vendors\, artisans\, growers\, and crafters\,” the release said. “Get ready for an abundance of family-friendly activities\, community arts\, exceptional live music on multiple stages\, and so much more.” \nA fun run will be held prior\, running from 8 to 10 a.m.\, starting at Talent City Hall\, 110 E. Main St. Live music will be available at Wagner Plaza\, Old Town Park\, and Library Commons Park. \nVendor locations will be along East Main Street\, with overflow onto Market Street\, City Hall Drive\, and John Street.
