SUMMARY:Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument Artist-in-Residence Reception
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is delighted to be co-hosting a reception for the two artists in this year’s Medford District BLM Artist-in-Residence: Nisty Tharp and Leslie Hauer. \nNisty Tharp is from Salt Lake City\, Utah and will be in residence from June 19 to July 3. Nisty creates drawings and paintings using primarily acrylic paint\, paint pens\, watercolor pencils or sharpies. Growing up in Colorado and living in Utah\, Nisty is always inspired to create artwork that reflects the stories and beauty of the landscape around her. Other themes in her artwork often include animals\, portraits\, and mental health. Nisty has been an art teacher in public education for many years where she has taught both high school and elementary art. Currently located in Salt Lake City\, UT\, Nisty creates commissioned art pieces\, stickers\, and prints for her friends\, family\, and the wider community around her. \nLeslie Ann Hauer lives and works in the semi-arid east side of Washington State and will be in residency from June 23 to July 2. She painted in watercolor in the 1980’s and recently returned to painting after career and family\, and a journey through a variety of artistic pursuits including ceramics and fiber arts. While she has no formal art training\, she is an avid student of art and artists. Currently she works primarily in oils and takes special delight in painting en plein air. Leslie has had paintings accepted in juried shows around the country and received awards for her work. \nAt the reception\, Nisty and Leslie will showcase some of their art and give us a presentation on how their Artist-in-Residence experience has been thus far. \nFriends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is a nonprofit organization\, and our mission is to support the protection\, restoration and conservation of the monument through service\, advocacy and education.

SUMMARY:Wildflower ID - Sunday Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come and enjoy the wildflowers along the Pacific Crest Trail from East Hyatt Lake Road to Little Hyatt Reservoir. We will have the opportunity to stop and identify wildflowers along the way with the help of Collette Streight\, Executive Director of Friends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument\, and Liz Landreth\, our resident “Flower Floozy!” \nLiz Landreth has been conducting wildflower walks for adults and kids off and on for more than 15 years. She began with the Sonoma County Parks Department and\, since moving to Ashland\, with the Ashland Hiking Group\, Southern Oregon Land Conservancy and Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. She is an amateur botanist with emphasis on intriguing stories about plants and our relationships with them. \nWe will meet at 9 a.m. Sunday\, July 2\, at the Rite Aid in Ashland\, and make our way into the Monument from there. Bring a lunch or snack to enjoy at the top\, and plenty of water and sun protection for the more exposed sections. Hiking boots are recommended. This will be a moderate-to-easy hike. \nThe Friends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is a nonprofit organization\, and our mission is to support the protection\, restoration\, and conservation of the monument through service\, advocacy\, and education. Our Hike and Learn program is designed to introduce the public to different topics and locations within the Monument. Hike and Learns are co-created with local scientists\, historians\, artists\, students\, and more.

SUMMARY:"The Success Paradox": A talk with co-author Will Wilkinson
DESCRIPTION:Success is not a goal\, it’s a lifestyle. \n“The Success Paradox” is the improbable story of a life and business transformed\, told in a warmly authentic style that says: “I hit rock bottom\, I surrendered\, I began doing the opposite of what I’d been doing before\, miracles happened\, and here’s what you can learn from my journey.” \nWith riveting personal details that illuminate his discoveries\, author Gary Cooper details how he defied the odds – not just to survive but to thrive – by implementing a series of paradoxical strategies\, fundamentally opposite to anything he’d ever done before. The result is an inspiring book about what happened to him and a blueprint for readers to experience how to surrender and win in business and life.

SUMMARY:Conscious Relationship as a Spiritual Path with Bill Kastenberg\, Ph.D
DESCRIPTION:Free admission \n1757 Ashland St.\, Ashland; one mile west of I-5 Exit 14 \nWhat is a conscious relationship? What stands in the way of having one? And how can it be overcome? \nIn February 2022\, I published a memoir\, “As a Matter of Heart.” It’s about a nuclear engineering professor’s life-changing journey from safety to self that addresses these questions from a personal viewpoint. In it\, I begin with my childhood circumstantial and existential wounding and tell the story of my path to healing through a conscious relationship. The story’s focus is my quest to discover my authentic self\, the person hiding behind a façade I called The Professor and set him free. The memoir also describes my experience as an emotional growth facilitator working with individuals\, couples\, and groups. \nIn this presentation\, I will describe the childhood trauma that initiated my journey and illustrate my quest for healing with selected readings from my memoir. Based on my personal inner work and my experience as a facilitator\, I will also present a set of values or principles that I believe can form the basis for answering these questions\, and can lead to a compassionate\, conscious\, ethical relationship—one that I would call a sacred relationship. \nWilliam E. (Bill) Kastenberg\, Ph.D. is a Distinguished Professor of Engineering\, Emeritus at the University of California\, Berkeley. During the latter part of his academic career\, he team-taught a course with his wife entitled\, “Ethics and the Impact of Technology on Society.” During the COVID-19 pandemic\, he taught (remotely) a freshman seminar entitled\, “Ethics in an Age of Existential Crises.” The seminar continued for three semesters\, each with a different group of students. \nFollowing retirement in January 2008\, he trained as an emotional growth facilitator\, and then worked with clients on healing the wounds of the heart through conscious relationships. As an outgrowth of his academic life as a teacher\, advisor\, and mentor\, he has led men’s groups in exploring healthy masculinity\, as well as facilitating individuals and couples in a psycho-spiritual process focused on healing childhood trauma. He and his wife work with couples\, especially those in long-term relationships\, where one partner or both are retired or near retirement. They live in Ashland with their Maltese\, Bogie. \nPresenters Website: https://www.asamatterofheart.com

SUMMARY:Wildflower ID - Sunday Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come and enjoy the wildflowers on a high elevation hike. The location will be determined based on where the wildflowers are blooming! She began with Sonoma County Parks Department and\, since moving to Ashland\, with the Ashland Hiking Group\, Southern Oregon Land Conservancy and Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. She is an amateur botanist with emphasis on intriguing stories about plants and our relationships with them. \nWe will meet at 9 a.m. at the Rite Aid in Ashland and make our way into the Monument from there. Bring a lunch or snack to enjoy at the top\, and plenty of water and sun protection for the more exposed sections. Hiking boots are recommended. This will be a moderate to easy hike. \nThe Friends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is a nonprofit organization\, and our mission is to support the protection\, restoration\, and conservation of the monument through service\, advocacy and education. Our Hike and Learn program is designed to introduce the public to different topics and locations within the Monument. Hike and Learns are co-created with local scientists\, historians\, artists\, students\, and more.
