SUMMARY:What's at Stake
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon University’s Schneider Museum of Art (SMA) reopens at 5 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11\, 2024\, with a new exhibition\, “What’s at Stake.” \nCurated by Catharine Clark\, owner and founding director of Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco\, this exhibition will feature artists Zeina Barakeh\, Al Farrow\, and Masami Teraoka. This compelling exhibition explores the urgent issues of our time\, delving into the mechanisms of war and colonialism while interrogating the unpredictability and legitimacy of armed conflict. It will be on view through March 23\, 2024. \n“What’s at Stake” sheds light on the devastating impacts of war\, human rights violations\, and environmental collapse\, compelling viewers to pause and reflect on our collective responsibility to one another. The exhibition raises essential questions about the consequences when violence goes unchecked and challenges us to consider what is truly at stake in a world grappling with these pressing issues. \nSMA Executive Director Scott Malbaurn shared\, “During a recent trip to San Francisco with museum members\, we visited solo exhibitions at Catharine Clark Gallery featuring Masami Teraoka\, Al Farrow\, and Zeina Barakeh. Recognizing the common theme of exploring the impact of war\, especially for artists raised in wartime milieus like Teraoka and Barakeh alongside the sculpture of Al Farrow\, which are assembled with war time munitions\, we decided to present these shows collectively as “What’s at Stake.” This group exhibition becomes a poignant question and statement\, resonating with contemporary violent events that seem to be happening all of the time globally.” \nAn opening reception will take place 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday\, Jan. 11. Curator Catharine Clark and select artists will be in attendance. The opening reception is free and open to the public; complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres will be provided. The Museum will be closed on Saturday\, Jan. 13 for a private event. \nNew Masterworks on Loan and Highlights from the Permanent Collection will also be on view in the Entry Gallery. Museum hours will be Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is always free\, but a $5 donation is suggested. \nWhat:\nSchneider Museum of Art presents: “What’s at Stake \nFree\, and open to the public. SUMMARY:Sunday Service: Seeding Forgiveness
DESCRIPTION:Please join us as speaker Irv Lubliner shares his mother’s story from Holocaust to hope. While few of us have ever endured this kind of suffering\, all of us have experiences and relationships that cause pain\, fear\, anger\, resentment\, and even hatred. How do we reach out with compassion and move on into a life of forgiveness and hope? \nBefore she died in 1974\, Felicia Bornstein Lubliner wrote about her internment in ghettos and concentration camps in Nazi-occupied Poland\, powerful stories published by her son\, Irv Lubliner. He will share excerpts from “Only Hope: A Survivor’s Stories of the Holocaust\,” shedding light on her experiences and indomitable spirit. Participants will learn about the Holocaust through the eyes of a survivor\, as well as how the instructor – the child of two survivors – was impacted by his parents’ experiences. \nIrv Lubliner teaches math\, music\, and literature classes for the Osher Lifelong Learning institute (OLLI) at Southern Oregon University (SOU). An emeritus SOU professor specializing in mathematics education\, he taught for 40 years (all levels\, kindergarten through graduate school)\, led seminars for teachers in 39 states\, and gave over 350 conference presentations\, including several keynote addresses. He has spoken about his mother’s experiences during the Holocaust for numerous schools\, libraries\, civic organizations\, book clubs\, and 83 other OLLI campuses nationwide. \nAttend in person or watch live or recorded on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@roguevalleyunitarianuniver8871

SUMMARY:Winter Blues Cruise! -Main St Protected Bike Path in Medford!
DESCRIPTION:This is a call to bring your family! Bring your friends! Bring your spark! And bring your analog bike\, or eBike! \nCommence the Winter Blues Cruise! It’s that time of year where everything gets dark early\, and it can be a little harder to stay motivated to ride. What better way than to get out with other people\, enjoy the beautiful Rogue Valley and meet up for some great food\, fun\, or both! \nThis week I wanted to take you to the protected on-street bikeway on Main St in Medford! \nWait! Protected on-street bikeway? You read that right! I wanted to showcase an effective on-street bike path that they built on Main Street in Medford that connects from the Bear Creek Greenway and currently ends at Alba Park! \nAnd! We’re doing something different on this ride! (Well\, aside from the bike path showcase!) We’re splitting off and showing multiple businesses our love on the protected bike path! This is intended to display that our cycling culture is beneficial to local commerce and\, perhaps\, convince more people that more infrastructure for cyclists (such as a protected bike path!) can promote said commerce as cyclists can feel safer arriving\, as well as departing! (BTW\, one of Team Rogue Cycles core values is to promote cycling as an alternate transportation mode and get people out of their cars!) I’ll be heading to Mellelo’s Coffee to grab a chai\, but all participants are encouraged to patronize businesses on the way! \nRoute info! We’ll meet at Ashland Electric Bikes at 11:45 a.m\, with some basic traffic and group riding rules at noon. We’ll do some call and response stretches to warm up (a good friend said that we’re not a group unless we do something cringey together!) Then off we ride! \nWe’ll ride a good mix of public streets and protected Greenway. Weather permitting\, there will be views of Grizzly Peak and the mountain ranges surrounding the valley! We’ll end the first half of our ride at Alba Park\, where participants are then encouraged to visit all of the local businesses! We’ll give you an hour to offer commerce\, and then we’ll meet up back at Alba Park! After that\, it’s back to Ashland Electric Bikes! The ride is about 32.7 miles w/ 1\,050ft of elevation gain! \nThis is an out and back loop! All who ride with us are encouraged to ride as a group\, however you are welcome to ride ahead\, behind\, join on the route\, or meet us there! \n***Important!\nBring money for food and beverage! And remember your bike lock/helmet! \nNote: This is a not an Ashland Electric Bikes event. The store owner has agreed to have the shop open\, on non-business days\, before and after our rides to allow folks a place to gather outside of the cold\, use the facilities and grab any last minute items they might have forgot. There will be a waiver that we ask everyone to sign making sure they acknowledge this point. \nThere is no Support And Gear (SAG) wagon! Please arrive with your protective gear\, as well as a tube(s)/pump/tools for the ride in case the ride goes awry! Ashland Electric Bikes (AEB) will have gear and tools available for purchase at the start\, as well as the end of the ride. \nAlso! \nWe ride rain\, or shine! This is the Winter Blues Cruise! Step away from your domicile and become a bit feral! Here’s looking forward to seeing you there!! \nFeel free to send me your questions/ comments! \nFor route info w/ turn by turn directions\, download the RidewithGPS app and select the link below! \nhttps://ridewithgps.com/routes/45825194

SUMMARY:Rogue Valley Men’s Circle Fire Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Weekly: A weekly Men’s Circle Fire Ceremony on Monday nights from 6:30-8:30 pm around the fire at the Island Fire Pit in scenic Lithia Park in Ashland\, Oregon. \nWhat could be more natural than gathering around the fire and talking about the challenges of being a man and/or assuming masculine roles in our current culture? \nCeremony: This Men’s Circle is conducted as a shamanic ceremony to establish connection and community. It is compatible with any religious and spiritual beliefs. We offer intentions\, smudge with sage\, and release things into the fire. A weekly theme such as “confidence” or “purpose” is introduced. \nTalking Stick and Fire Ceremony: A talking stick is passed to speak your truth on this topic and things coming up in your life. The Men’s Circle will be conducted as a fire ceremony as long as we are allowed to build fires this year. After this time\, a new form of ceremony will be considered to continue the Men’s Circle. \nInclusive: This ceremony is for anyone looking to awaken and integrate dynamic masculine energy and roles. This includes all gender identities and sexual orientations. \nDrug and alcohol-free: This form of ceremony does not utilize plant medicine or psychedelics. Please do not be under the influence of any drugs or alcohol during this ceremony. \nAge: This ceremony is for ages 18 and older. \nFacilitator: This ceremony is conducted by Michael Hoffman\, LCSW. He is a licensed psychotherapist and spiritual coach. He trained with a spiritual teacher/shaman for 22 years and offered psychotherapy and relationship counseling for the past 28 years. Michael’s role and responsibility as the facilitator is to ensure that the ceremony is emotionally safe. Judgment and criticism will be stopped. He will also encourage you to venture deeper into your dynamic masculine energy. \nDirections: The ceremony is at the Island Fire Pit in Ashland’s scenic Lithia Park. It is just south (away from downtown) of the Parks Office between the Cotton Memorial and Hillside on a small island in Ashland Creek. There is a parking area off Granite St. \nYou can just show up or register at https://www.naturalwayofbeing.com/rogue-valley-men’s-circle-ceremony. You can also get more information on this webpage. \nCost: The suggested donation is $15 per circle. You can pay at the ceremony with cash or Venmo. You can pay online with a credit card\, debit card\, or HSA credit card by registering at the above web address. \nQuestions: Feel free to call Michael Hoffman at 541-639-6246 with questions or concerns. Hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:CLOSE TO HOME: Sexual Abusers and Serial Killers\, Memoir and Murder with author Janine O’Neill
DESCRIPTION:On February 5\, 1981\, a young couple passed by Ashland as they drove from Edmonds\, Washington to Nellis Air Force Base\, near Las Vegas\, for the man’s first military assignment. Late that night\, they were murdered by a long-haul trucker and self-proclaimed serial killer named Ward Weaver Jr. after their car broke down in California’s Tehachapi Mountains. \nTwenty-one years later\, Weaver’s eponymously named son\, Ward Weaver III\, murdered two girls in Clackamas County\, Oregon. Then he buried one of the girl’s bodies under concrete in his own backyard\, just as his father had done with the young woman he’d kidnapped near Tehachapi. \nIn 2016\, while Ward Weaver Jr. was on death row in California and Ward III was serving life sentences in Oregon\, their son/grandson\, Francis Weaver\, was also convicted of murder in Clackamas County. My book uses the Weaver family’s unique history as a hook from which to hang a broader story about why some people are more likely than others to become victims of violent crime\, perpetrators of violent crime or both. \nAs an attorney\, I prosecuted crimes committed against children in Clackamas County for seven years. Had I not left the district attorney’s office there\, I would have expected to be one of the deputy DAs assigned to Ward Weaver III’s case. As it was\, I covered the story in my second career as a reporter for the Portland Tribune. I also am the former executive director of the Oregon Crime Victims Law Center and the mother of a child who—like Weaver III’s victims—was sexually assaulted by a known\, trusted adult. (My family’s experience is part of the memoir aspect of my book\, which I published under my unmarried name\, O’Neill\, to protect my family’s privacy.) \nWhat one reviewer said about the book \n“Best book\, local and true crime edition: Janine O’Neill’s Close to Home\, in which the Portland journalist and attorney who covered the 2002 Oregon City disappearances of Ashley Pond and Miranda Gaddis takes a look at those murders (and others) through a multi-faceted lens: historical\, biological\, legal\, personal and intensely analytical. O’Neill tells several extremely difficult yet well-organized stories through her excellent and tight writing and top-notch investigative chops\, along with a dash of\, somehow\, self-effacing wit.” From the Portland Business Journal‘s “The PBJ’s best of 2023 in arts and culture.”

SUMMARY:9D Transformational Breathwork with Nikki Clifton
DESCRIPTION:Experience a new generation of breathwork — artfully engineered sound and breath journeys that catalyze life-changing transformational experiences. \n9D breathwork combines cutting edge audio technology with guided vocal coaching\, music\, subliminal suggestion\, frequencies and vibrations that sculpt your neurology. It uses timeless wisdom and modern inspiration with transformational breathwork for a powerful and paradigm-shifting journey into your nervous system that clears trauma and limiting beliefs\, and shifts anxiety\, depression and negative thoughts\, deeply restoring your body to optimum health at a cellular level and ushering in a deep feeling of peace and wellbeing. \nAs a former practicing acupuncturist\, Nikki Clifton is highly trained in the energy systems of the body. She discovered that although acupuncture is highly effective for many types of pain and other “dis-eases\,” transformational breathwork is one of the most effective and quickest ways to release blocked energy in the body which has been found to often be the root cause of pain and suffering of the body\, mind or spirit. This blocked energy is usually caused by unresolved trauma\, negative thoughts\, emotions and/or limiting beliefs. Many people discover that even one session of breathwork is as effective as many hours of talk therapy. Discover your authentic self\, increase your resilience\, ignite your sense of purpose\, renew your joy for living and tap into a deep well of energy and vitality. \nBreathwork as a treatment is most commonly sought out by people struggling with:\nTrauma and PTSD\nPatterns of self-sabotage\nChronic pain\nGrief and loss\nMoney blocks\nAddiction challenges\nRelationship struggles\nand more… \nSmall group 9D breathwork sessions are held every 2nd and 4th Thursdays at 7 p.m.\, at the Rogue Valley Metaphysical Library. Receive 50% off your first session with coupon code 9D50. Nikki is also available for private sessions for individuals or groups up to 12 people.
