SUMMARY:Jec Ballou Equine Fitness & Performance Clinic
DESCRIPTION:Massie Equine Veterinary Clinic & The Equine Healing Center is thrilled to announce that renowned author and equine fitness expert Jec Ballou will be hosting a two-day riding clinic focused on equine fitness and performance on May 31st and June 1st\, 2025. \nJec Ballou\, a lifelong equestrian with a deep understanding of equine physiology\, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this exclusive clinic. Raised in a horse training family in Vermont and having studied dressage extensively throughout Europe\, Ballou eventually settled in California\, where she recognized a critical gap in equine training. \n“About 15 years ago\, I realized that most of the problems riders struggled with stemmed from their horses not using their bodies well. They lacked strength or coordination\, they had muscle imbalances\, they were stiff\, and so on\,” says Ballou. “Meanwhile\, horse training had become too specialized and way too complicated. We needed simple\, straightforward tools to help horses use their bodies optimally.” \nThis realization led to Ballou’s groundbreaking book\, “101 Dressage Exercises for Horse and Rider” (2005)\, which was endorsed by the United States Dressage Federation as an essential resource for all riders. This was followed by three more highly acclaimed books\, including “55 Corrective Exercises for Horses\,” “Equine Fitness\,” and “101 Western Dressage Exercises\,” all of which have been translated into multiple languages and are trusted worldwide. \nBallou’s approach emphasizes simple\, straightforward techniques to help horses regain freedom of movement\, enjoy exercise\, and build strong\, healthy bodies. Through her publications\, customized fitness plans\, online courses\, and in-person clinics\, she empowers riders globally to achieve their individual goals\, regardless of discipline. \n“Jec Aristotle Ballou has spent her life with horses\, studying dressage around the globe alongside a tireless passion for equine exercise physiology\,” states Dr. Massie of Massie Equine Veterinary Clinicr. “She is a tireless advocate for the horse\, committed to promoting the understanding that quality athletic movement can never happen as a result of shortcuts\, force\, or hurried training methods.” \nClinic Details:\nDates: May 31st – June 1st\, 2025\nLocation: Massie Equine Veterinary Clinic & The Equine Healing Center 11910 Blackwell Road\, Central Point\, Oregon 97502\nCost:\n$550 per horse & rider (includes catered lunch and full board for horse)\n$475 per horse & rider (includes catered lunch & no board (haul-ins)\n$125 auditing fee (includes admission and lunch for both days)\nRegistration: https://www.theequinehealingcenter.org/event-details/jec-ballou-equine-fitness-performance-clinic\nQuestions: Call 541-636-1191\nJec Ballou is dedicated to working with riders from all disciplines\, helping them and their equine partners achieve optimal fitness and performance. SUMMARY:Beekman Bank Museum tours
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to “Step Behind the Counter” of the oldest financial institution in the Pacific Northwest—Jacksonville’s 1863 Beekman Bank Museum—when Historic Jacksonville\, Inc. opens the museum for summer tours. \nEstablished as a “gold dust” office in 1856\, it was the first “bank” north of San Francisco. \nScheduled 2025 “banking hours” are 11am to 3 pm\, Saturdays and Sundays\, from May 24 through August 31. The Beekman Bank Museum is located at 110 W. California Street (the corner of California and North 3rd streets) in Jacksonville. Guests can interact with costumed docents sharing stories of late 19th Century banking practices\, gold shipping\, and handshake deals; step behind the counter and peer in drawers containing old checks\, stage schedules\, and paperwork; and enter the vault that stored millions in gold! \nVisitors can spend as much or as little time as they like—although we suggest they allow at least 30 minutes. Tours are FREE\, but donations are encouraged since all monies go towards the preservation and maintenance of this historic legacy! \nThe original bank was established in 1856 as a “gold dust” office. (If we’re factual\, it was a safe.) Cornelius Beekman had come to Jacksonville in 1854 as an express rider between Yreka and Jacksonville carrying newspaper\, mail\, parcels\, and gold over the Siskiyous. When his employer’s firm failed\, he established Jacksonville’s Beekman’s Express and his gold dust office. In 1863 he became Jacksonville’s Wells Fargo agent and constructed the Beekman Bank. \nDuring Jacksonville’s heyday as the governmental\, commercial\, and social hub of Southern Oregon in the late 1800s\, the Beekman’s Bank saw over $40 million in gold cross its counters—equivalent to over $1 billion today! The current 1863 structure is the only commercial wooden building on California Streeet to survive Jacksonville’s many fires. It has been preserved intact as a museum since Cornelius Beekman\, the wealthiest and most prominent of Jacksonville’s pioneers\, locked the doors in 1915. \nAdditional information is available at 541-245-3650; info@historicjacksonville.org; and www.historicjacksonville.org/behind-the-counter/.

SUMMARY:Thursday Evening Calm Abiding Meditaion
DESCRIPTION:This meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \n“From this practice\, we can experience a stable and calm mind. We learn to maintain and return to a sense of stillness\, no matter what our outer circumstances. The mind is relaxed\, alert and aware. The results of this practice are serenity\, freedom in the face of circumstances\, and ultimately Buddhahood.” \nFrom Meditation for Beginners\, by Bokar Rinpoche. \nTo attend Calm Abiding Meditation via Zoom\, email the office at OFFICE@KSCASHLAND.ORG to join the mailing list. \n

SUMMARY:The First I-5 Wildlife Overcrossing & the Importance of Ecological Connectivity
DESCRIPTION:This is an in-person and virtual event. To register for the webinar\, click here: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_lvQZx4FKQHGzBkewxm1cOw#/registration \nThe Mariposa Wildlife Overcrossing on Interstate-5 will be the crown jewel in what could become a network of wildlife crossings stretching along the interstate between the City of Ashland and the Oregon-California border. Interstate 5 and the approximately 17\,000 vehicles it supports daily along this route have severed ecological connections between Coastal and Inland ecosystems for decades\, putting at risk one of the most diverse wildlife assemblages in the nation. We will describe what a network of wildlife crossings might look like – including building new bridges\, retrofitting existing bridges and improving culverts – and how these changes would improve life for a diverse array of wildlife species and create a safer and more enjoyable future for the travelling public. \nJack Williams\, PhD\, is the Emeritus Senior Scientist for Trout Unlimited and Co-coordinator of the Southern Oregon Wildlife Crossing Coalition. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Rogue River Watershed Council. Since his retirement from Trout Unlimited\, most of Jack’s work has focused on conservation projects in Southern Oregon\, including efforts to restore ecological connectivity in and around the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument. His dogs\, energetic springer spaniels\, also keep him busy with field trials around the West. \nKaren Mager\, PhD\, is an Associate Professor of Environmental Science\, Policy & Sustainability and Biology at SOU. She is a wildlife ecologist focused on the management and conservation of mammals. Much of her research has focused on caribou population dynamics\, genetic diversity\, and connectivity. Here in southern Oregon\, her focus is on how roads affect connectivity for a diversity of species. She loves to work with students in the field using methods such as camera trapping\, small mammal live trapping\, and natural history observation. \n
