SUMMARY:Siskiyou Singers Spring 2025 Concerts: "Earth Song"
DESCRIPTION:Siskiyou Singers present their Spring 2025 concerts\, “Earth Song\,” featuring music celebrating nature and admonitions to protect it. \nPerformances will be at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday\, May 10 and 11\, at Southern Oregon University’s Music Recital Hall. General admission is $25 ($5 for students and Oregon Trail Card holders). Tickets are available now online or can be purchased from choir members or at Music Coop or Paddington Station in Ashland in late March. Tickets are also available at the door. \nThe program begins with “Kasar Mie la Gaji (The Earth is Tired)” by Alberto Grau and “Break\, Break\, Break\,” a Tennyson poem about lost love and set to music by choir Director Mark Reppert. The concert then strikes a hopeful note with “The Bluebird” by Charles Villiers Stanford; “O Lovely Night” by Johannes Brahms; the Renaissance madrigal “Sweet Suffolk Owl” by Thomas Vautor; and Eric Whitacre’s “Little Birds.” The final piece of the first half is the sunny “Away From the Roll of the Sea” by Allistar MacGillvray. \nThe second half begins with “The Lark In the Clear Air\,” an Irish folk song arranged by Andrew Carter; it is the story of a young lover who is encouraged to pursue his love by the song of the lark. Another inspiring piece is “The Prow” by the young composer Matthew Hazzard\, which tells of an exhilarating day out on the wild sea. We will then travel out to the prairie with a luscious arrangement by Mark Hayes of the old\, familiar “Home on the Range”. \nThe program ends with a warning and hope. In a clever arrangement by Matt and Adam Podd\, Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” tells us that “you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone.” The final piece and namesake of the concert is “Earth Song” by Frank Ticheli\, who tells us\, “The scorched earth cries out in vain\, O war and power you blind and blur\,…[but] through darkness and strife I’ll sing!”

SUMMARY:Into The White: A Love Story: a Reading and Discussion by author Two Steps
DESCRIPTION:The big silver bird was mortally stricken\, both engines were out and one was on fire. \nEven the right windshield had been breached. The large cranes had flown with multiple impacts all over the jet. Inside\, the pilot was struggling for control in the buffeting winds\, cold and feathers. The copilot was fighting the surging of cold air\, trying to plug the hole in the windshield with his winter coat. The manager of the six Asian girls was yelling instructions in Chinese to them. They had to protect their heads and necks with inflated life preservers and their pillows and blankets\, for a crash landing was soon to take place. \nThey might have maybe three minutes before impact. The pilot scanned the terrain. Mountains were everywhere\, save the half bowl. But one set of eyes up on the mountain saw it all\, and he prayed out loud for God to help them….and him!

SUMMARY:Windows in Time: Azoreans in the Applegate: The Murder of Antone Joseph
DESCRIPTION:Heather Paladini will present a tale of the local figures connected to her home in Williams – a farmhouse built in 1900 on one of the original homesteads of the Applegate Valley. \nBeginning with the discovery of a letter and century-old postcard in the house\, Heather will follow the lives of the people who called this land home a hundred years ago. This includes the story of the murder of Antone Joseph\, a Portuguese immigrant and gold miner who held the original homestead certificate for the parcel of land on which the house was built. \nHeather Paladini moved to the Applegate Valley in 2023 from Olympia\, WA. A writer\, naturalist\, bird and pollinator enthusiast\, and artist\, Heather stays busy both on her property and in the local community. She owns and operates Wild Oak Preschool on her homestead property\, volunteers with A Greater Applegate\, and runs a children’s program for the Williams and Applegate farmers markets. \nThe monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people\, values\, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services. Programs are presented in Medford (first Wednesdays\, in-person and online) and again in Ashland (second Wednesdays\, in-person). Registration is only required to attend the Zoom version of Medford’s program. Recordings of Medford presentations are available on the JCLS Beyond YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Bike and E-bike Skills & Safety Workshop
DESCRIPTION:May = Bike Month! \nJoin Mike Vergeer from the Rogue Valley Transportation District for a basic skills and safety workshop for both regular bikes and e-bikes! \nBikes and e-bikes are very practical and popular choices for basic transportation around our region\, but they don’t come with a driver training course. The power and weight of e-bikes make them quite different to ride than traditional bikes. The first half of the workshop will consist of a presentation and discussion of safe bicycling on streets shared with cars. The second half will consist of hands-on safety drills and a ride. No prior experience is necessary. Workshop will be held rain or shine. \nNOTE: Participants will need to bring a helmet and a bicycle that is in good working condition in order to participate in the second half and a signed waiver is required.

SUMMARY:ART in ACTION with Joi Tripp at ART on FIRST
DESCRIPTION:Join ART on FIRST and Joi Tripp for ART in ACTION\, an opportunity to meet\, experience\, and interact with Joi while she provides a live demonstration of her creating micro-mosaic jewelry. \nJoi brings the timeless art of micro-mosaics to life. This creative form\, popular among royals for centuries before the Vatican Studio opened in the 1700s\, was the perfect medium for Joi’s creativity to shine. She cuts and files tiny glass rods into pieces averaging 2mm x 2mm. These small pieces are then placed into an epoxy adhesive bed that is permanent. Joi’s subjects include gardens\, flowers\, and rural scenes. When she is finished\, gemstones and borosilicate glass beads frame the pendants. \nFor more information\, please visit www.artandfirstashland.com.

SUMMARY:Thursday Evening Calm Abiding Meditaion
DESCRIPTION:This meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \n“From this practice\, we can experience a stable and calm mind. We learn to maintain and return to a sense of stillness\, no matter what our outer circumstances. The mind is relaxed\, alert and aware. The results of this practice are serenity\, freedom in the face of circumstances\, and ultimately Buddhahood.” \nFrom Meditation for Beginners\, by Bokar Rinpoche. \nTo attend Calm Abiding Meditation via Zoom\, email the office at OFFICE@KSCASHLAND.ORG to join the mailing list. \n
