SUMMARY:Sunday Service: Be Not Afraid
DESCRIPTION:The sentence most repeated in religious texts is “Be not afraid.” How do we set aside fear when asked or commanded to? What is the fear about and how do we counter it when we need or want to? What fears do we sometimes feel more out of habit than danger? What might we do to lessen our fear? \n“We can let fear rule our lives or we can become childlike with curiosity\, pushing our boundaries\, leaping out of our comfort zones\, and accepting what life puts before us. ” — Alan Watts \nMonthly Theme: Fear \nAttend in person or watch live or recorded on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@roguevalleyunitarianuniver8871

SUMMARY:Williams Plant Propagation Fair
DESCRIPTION:The perfect event to share cuttings of (labeled) fruit trees\, plant\, and seeds. \nThe main attraction is “making” a custom fruit tree. \nWhen you arrive\, there are many little white buckets with sticks in them. Each has a label with a description. Choose the variety you want\, grab a stick of it\, and label it with the blue tape and marker lying around. Then take that to the rootstock station and select the type of tree you want and purchase the appropriate rootstock for your planting site (3 to 5 dollars sliding scale). Now bring this material to the Grafting station where an expert will graft the scion onto the rootstock for you. Of course you can take scion home and graft it onto an existing tree you have. \nRuby from Faerie Road Farm will teach classes. 1pm Intro to Grafting\, an 2pm Dormant season fruit tree pruning.

SUMMARY:Ecosystems as Models for Restoring Our Economies (To a Sustainable State) a discussion with Author John Giordanengo
DESCRIPTION:Most of us have spent our lives trying to “save the environment” through individual actions—recycling\, shopping local\, supporting green companies. Or we are mired in seemingly endless social challenges like homelessness\, the growing wealth gap\, food insecurity\, and so many others. Meaningful change has been painfully slow. \nIn Ecosystems as Models for Restoring Our Economies (To a Sustainable State)\, John H. Giordanengo offers a fresh and engaging perspective on our most pressing social and environmental concerns\, and takes the most logical next step. With human stories and intriguing research\, he shows how we can learn from resilient\, adaptable\, and productive ecological systems to transform our economies to a sustainable state. \nDrawing on decades of experience in ecological restoration and business\, Giordanengo outlines the mysterious structure of a sustainable economy\, and the means by which all of us—politicians\, business leaders\, consumers—can take novel actions for real impact. From a focus on strengthening regional economies to regenerative agriculture to renewable energy\, he highlights practical strategies for those who care deeply about environmental and social issues\, while sustaining our economic needs.

SUMMARY:Be Gun Smart….Whether or You Own a Firearm or Not
DESCRIPTION:In November 2022 Oregon voters narrowly passed Measure 114\, a groundbreaking gun control law that has never taken effect. Mired in series of court challenges\, it may be years before the law’s fate is settled. But there is plenty to talk about before the litigation runs its course. \n“Be Gun Smart….Whether or You Own a Firearm or Not” is a free public program on Tues.\, March 4\, 4:00-5:30 p.m.\, in the Gresham Room at Ashland Library\, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Part of the “Big Ideas” program series\, it is presented by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Ashland Branch and Jackson County Library Services. \nThe speakers are Ashland Police Chief Tighe O’Meara and Jackson County Sheriff Nate Sickler. They will discuss a number of issues important to citizens including an overview of current local/state/federal laws surrounding guns\, how to dispose of unwanted firearms\, and community and agency response to threats to our schools. \nChief O’Meara joined the Ashland Police Department in 2010 and has served as a Patrol Sergeant\, Detective Sergeant and as the Deputy Chief over both the Operations and Support divisions. He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police\, the Oregon Association of Chiefs of Police and the Police Executive Research Forum.  A native of Detroit\, he holds a Master’s Degree in Management from Southern Oregon University.  \nSheriff Sickler moved to the Rogue Valley in 1995 to attend Southern Oregon University. He earned a Criminology degree in 1999 and began a career in law enforcement. He has served in both city and county law enforcement agencies and held positions in patrol\, detectives and administration prior to being appointed Sheriff in 2017. Since then he was elected to the position twice by voters. Sheriff Sickler has been a firearms instructor for the past 24 years and was involved in competitive shooting for many years.

SUMMARY:Thursday Evening Calm Abiding Meditaion
DESCRIPTION:This meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice\, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support\, such as the breath. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do\, we release them and maintain our connection to the support. \n“From this practice\, we can experience a stable and calm mind. We learn to maintain and return to a sense of stillness\, no matter what our outer circumstances. The mind is relaxed\, alert and aware. The results of this practice are serenity\, freedom in the face of circumstances\, and ultimately Buddhahood.” \nFrom Meditation for Beginners\, by Bokar Rinpoche. \nTo attend Calm Abiding Meditation via Zoom\, email the office at OFFICE@KSCASHLAND.ORG to join the mailing list. \n
