SUMMARY:Learn the craft of making crossworld puzzles
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to construct your own crossword puzzle? Or just been curious about what goes on inside and outside those boxes? \nAshland.News’ crossword editor Steve Weyer will introduce the process and techniques of crossword construction from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday\, Aug. 10\, at the Ashland library\, 410 Siskiyou Blvd.\, Ashland. The event is open to the public. \nThis second presentation of a two-part series will cover conventions\, software tools\, theme entries\, grid layout\, fill words\, clues\, and publication/sharing. After demoing how easy it is to generate a free-form word puzzle\, Weyer will shift focus to the more interesting world of U.S. newspaper-style\, symmetric crosswords. \nWeyer has been a cruciverbalist (“crossword aficionado”) since the 1990s. Besides solving crosswords\, he teaches crossword courses at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and constructs crosswords for local organizations and submits to national publications. His first New York Times crossword puzzle is scheduled to debut in 2023. \nAshland.News plans to introduce crosswords with locally inspired themes\, answers and clues this Fall. Stay tuned!

SUMMARY:“On The Carousel of Time”: a talk with Author Ellen Craine
DESCRIPTION:It’s 1968. War is raging in Vietnam\, and American culture is changing at lightning speed. As a college freshman\, Becky Norris is swept up by the anti-war movement\, not to mention by her love affair with a young radical. Her sister\, Susan\, a sorority girl\, takes a different tack\, determined to hold on to the familiar. Back at home\, their parents are bewildered and\, at times\, infuriated by the newly emerging culture. Relationships shift and strain as each family member rides the turbulent tides of change. \nThis novel is comprised of a series of stories\, each told from a particular family member’s point of view. Together they create a portrait of white\, middle-class life in the United States half a century ago. With humor and insight\, “On the Carousel of Time” explores the interplay between cultural and individual transformation\, the power of reconciliation\, and the enduring nature of family love.

This 90-minute discussion-based training is designed for audience members to be included in learning about this widely complex issue. \nWithin the training\, audience members will hear stories from survivors of sex trafficking from the organization “The Life Story.” They will also hear a story from a local survivor of sex trafficking.\nI look forward to meeting you all and thank you for taking the first step in addressing sex trafficking in our community: EDUCATION! \nNote: Due to a travel conflict\, the originally scheduled presenter\, Lauren Trantham\, selected her colleague Rosa Van Gordon to present on this topic. \nRosa Van Gordon is a trafficking confidential advocate with Community Works\, with a background in advocating for children and their families who have been abused. Through coordination of the Jackson County Coalition Against Sex Trafficking Task Force\, Rosa strives to build a community that is educated on what trafficking looks like\, empathetic for the survivors of trafficking\, and inspired to get involved in the anti-trafficking movement. \nFree admission – 1757 Ashland St.\, Ashland; one mile west of I-5 Exit 14
