SUMMARY:Courageous Conversations about Religion\, Sex & Love with Joanie Lindenmeyer
DESCRIPTION:What happens when two women commit to serving the Catholic Church as nuns-Brides of Christ\, taking vows of chastity-but fall passionately in love? They must defy the Church’s rules against same-sex relationships and blaze a bold trail for a joyous\, adventurous life together- at a time when LGBTQ people could be killed for being gay and same-sex marriage was decades in the future. \n“Carol and I had great trust and faith in ourselves and in our higher power to confront\, tackle\, and live a life of prayer\, hope\, and joy. Love always wins! I’ll share our positive outlook for humanity. I will talk about being gay\, keeping it secret\, coming out\, and how all of that wrapped around our Catholicism as nuns and as believers. We eventually married\, officiated as a sacrament from an Episcopal priest. There is enormous beauty inside each of you. Let it shine! Be a lamp on a table — not hidden under a basket! Prayers\, hugs\, and love.” — Joanie \nJoanie Lindenmeyer is the co-author of “Nun Better: An AMAZING Love Story.” She’s a former Catholic nun and retired teacher and coach who enjoys playing and watching sports\, traveling\, fishing\, gardening\, playing guitar\, listening to music\, hiking and walking\, baking treats\, and hanging out with family and friends. \nFilled with joy and hope\, she believes Jesus is her best friend. In 1982\, she met Carol Tierheimer and they married on August 5\, 2020. Raised in San Diego\, California\, she taught physical education and health in public high school for 25 years\, after teaching religion and P.E. for four years in Catholic elementary schools. \nShe coached boys and girls sports teams for 20 years. Joanie worked at two nonprofits and a county department of health in areas of community health\, addictions\, teen pregnancy\, sexuality\, child abuse prevention\, HIV/AIDS prevention\, STI testing and counseling\, and wellness. A San Diego State University graduate\, she was a member of the university volleyball team and has a California teaching credential. \nShe was a Catholic Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet\, ministering in many ways. Her dedication shines to people of all ages\, making their lives brighter\, happier and healthier. She was committed to her one and only\, lifetime lover and spouse of 40 years and is a recent widow. Joanie and Carol Tierheimer began writing “Nun Better: An AMAZING Love Story” together in the Brookings\, Oregon home they shared for 31 years. \nView full events calendar: https://rvml.org/events.

SUMMARY:Our money supports fossil fuels: let’s divest together
DESCRIPTION:Because of policies in the state treasury\, our money is being used to support fossil fuel extraction and distribution. We think it’s time to end this investment strategy. \nAccording to the Oregon State Treasury statement\, its balance as of the end of 2022 was $134 billion. This includes monies paid into the Public Employees Retirement System and held in trust by Treasury for state agencies and entities. Overseeing the investment and allocation of State of Oregon trust funds is the Oregon Investment Council\, composed of four members appointed by the governor with the Treasurer and Director of the Public Employees Retirement System serving as a function of their offices. \nThose managing state funds have a fiduciary responsibility to manage them in a manner that best serves those to whom the money belongs. This means those paying into PERS and the citizens of the state. Since\, by their electoral decisions\, Oregonians have indicated a desire to address the global climate crisis\, this means also that the investment of state (our) funds should not serve to promote the climate crisis by supporting fossil fuel corporations. \nDuring the last two Oregon Legislative Sessions\, Divest Oregon has sought to require the Treasury to be more transparent in its investment practices and targets\, and to commit to divesting from fossil fuels. Despite recognition that investing in fossil fuel corporations is potentially a risky financial tactic\, Treasury has resisted this effort and has successfully defeated legislation that would have moved the state forward in the direction of divestment and greater transparency. \nThe best response so far from the Treasury exhibits no urgency and simply supports the transition of funds to a net-zero carbon emission portfolio by no later than 2050\, a date by which we know humanity needs to have achieved net zero emissions of greenhouse gases already. \nThe Southern Oregon Climate Action Now monthly general meeting\, held  Tuesday\, June 27\, will focus on the efforts of Divest Oregon to bring the Treasury more in line with the wishes of the majority of Oregon citizens. The program will feature Rory Cowal from Divest Oregon\, who will discuss the reasons for divestment\, the efforts of Divest Oregon to achieve it\, what the next steps will be subsequent to the failure of HB2601 during the 2023 session\, and what we can do individually to invest conscientiously. \nThe program run from 6 to 7 p.m. via ZOOM. There is no charge for joining the ZOOM meeting\, but participants must register at the link on the SOCAN calendar event: https://socan.eco/event/divest-together/.

SUMMARY:Let’s Talk About Viewpoint Diversity: What It Is\, Why We Need It\, and What Gets in the Way by Marla Estes
DESCRIPTION:Diversity is a word we hear a lot these days. And rightly so. But … not so much “ViewPoint Diversity” (VPD.) \nVPD allows us to comprehend the other side’s viewpoint in such a way that it informs and impacts the way we see the whole issue. This is useful at the workplace\, in couples\, in families and in politics. \nVPD allows us to zoom out and get the biggest view we can — so that we can make optimal decisions and take effective action that will sustainably work in the long run. \nWe are often convinced we’re perceiving the world accurately through our personal experience and the information (accurate or not) to which we’ve exposed ourselves. VPD can illuminate our blinds spots. Given that there is not one of us who can understand everything about anything\, VPD is crucial. NOTE: We will not be discussing specific political issues. \nFacilitator Marla Estes\, M.A. has a background in Psychology. Since 2007\, she has taught workshops using film as a way to gain a better understanding of ourselves and others. She created Building Bridgers to address the political polarization in our country. Since 2017\, she has been giving presentations\, movie nights\, book groups\, workshops\, and classes. Her focus is on education and helping people to develop insights and skills in approaching difficult conversations. \nPresenter’s Website: https://www.BuildingBridgers.com

SUMMARY:Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument Artist-in-Residence Reception
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is delighted to be co-hosting a reception for the two artists in this year’s Medford District BLM Artist-in-Residence: Nisty Tharp and Leslie Hauer. \nNisty Tharp is from Salt Lake City\, Utah and will be in residence from June 19 to July 3. Nisty creates drawings and paintings using primarily acrylic paint\, paint pens\, watercolor pencils or sharpies. Growing up in Colorado and living in Utah\, Nisty is always inspired to create artwork that reflects the stories and beauty of the landscape around her. Other themes in her artwork often include animals\, portraits\, and mental health. Nisty has been an art teacher in public education for many years where she has taught both high school and elementary art. Currently located in Salt Lake City\, UT\, Nisty creates commissioned art pieces\, stickers\, and prints for her friends\, family\, and the wider community around her. \nLeslie Ann Hauer lives and works in the semi-arid east side of Washington State and will be in residency from June 23 to July 2. She painted in watercolor in the 1980’s and recently returned to painting after career and family\, and a journey through a variety of artistic pursuits including ceramics and fiber arts. While she has no formal art training\, she is an avid student of art and artists. Currently she works primarily in oils and takes special delight in painting en plein air. Leslie has had paintings accepted in juried shows around the country and received awards for her work. \nAt the reception\, Nisty and Leslie will showcase some of their art and give us a presentation on how their Artist-in-Residence experience has been thus far. \nFriends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is a nonprofit organization\, and our mission is to support the protection\, restoration and conservation of the monument through service\, advocacy and education.
