SUMMARY:Friends of Hannon Library Speaker Series: Ashland.news editor Bert Etling speaks on "Sense of Place"
DESCRIPTION:Veteran journalist Bert Etling will speak about “Sense of Place: Community journalism’s role in mediating community identity\,” Thursday\, March 9\, as part of the Friends of Hannon Library Speaker Series for the 2022-23 academic year. \nCommunity papers have long played a central role in collecting\, curating and distributing information that documents and shapes what’s going on in local areas\, helping define and articulate what a community thinks of itself. Etling will discuss the transition of that role as newspapers adapt to an evolving media landscape. For journalists the question is “Who are we and what are we doing here?” \nBert Etling is a longtime community journalist and the executive editor of Ashland.news\, a nonprofit\, community news site launched in January 2022 in Ashland\, Oregon. Etling is also editor-in-chief of the Applegater\, a community newsmagazine serving the Applegate Valley. \nHe previously edited the Ashland Daily Tidings from 2014 to 2019\, leading a local news revival for the cherished community paper that saw a five-fold increase in local content and 30 percent increase in circulation. Before that\, he edited The Cambrian\, a weekly newspaper published by the San Luis Obispo Tribune\, part of the McClatchy Corp. \nA Zoom link will also be available on the Friends website (https://hanlib.sou.edu/friends/lectureseries2022-23.html)

SUMMARY:KS Wild and Rogue Riverkeeper's 21st annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Over the past two decades\, KS Wild and Rogue Riverkeeper have used the art of film to help tell powerful stories from the wild and from frontline communities around the world. The first Siskiyou Film Festival kicked off 21 years ago when the Siskiyou Project and its long-time staffer Barry Snitkin organized a group of volunteers in Josephine County. The Siskiyou Project and KS Wild merged in 2011\, and we carried on the tradition of hosting the annual Siskiyou Film Festival in Grants Pass. We were honored to keep partnering with Barry on hosting the FilmFest until his passing in 2015. \nWith the world shifting these past few years\, we merged the Siskiyou Film Festival and Rogue Riverkeeper’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival On Tour into a larger\, single event that can be enjoyed from the comfort of your own home. We are excited to once again host this virtual event\, with plans to return to in-person programming next year! \nWe are thrilled to carry on the legacy of Barry. His memory lives on with this environmental film festival which has always served as an opportunity for activists and community groups to come together for a common cause. Barry believed we should highlight the wonders of the region and the world through film and art. \nPurchase a 2023 FilmFest ticket and you’ll be supporting our wildlands and wildlife conservation efforts in southwest Oregon & northwest California. Please join us! \nTickets and film lineup at www.siskiyoufilmfest.org. \nAfter you purchase your ticket\, the film festival will be sent to your inbox on March 8th & 10th. The film festival will be available to view for 5 days after the debut until March 15th. \nPlease show your support to KS Wild & Rogue Riverkeeper by purchasing your film festival tickets\, and play in our raffle for a chance to win big. The raffle runs until March 10th! SUMMARY:Keely and Du
DESCRIPTION:Ashland Contemporary Theatre in collaboration with Livia Genise Productions presents “Keely and Du” directed by Livia Genise. \nThis runner-up for the 1994 Pulitzer Prize explores the relationship of Keely\, a pregnant rape victim and Du\, a right-to-life zealot who Du is confining. There is some described violence in this staged reading\, so audience discretion is advised. \nFeaturing Alayha McNamara as Keely and Jeannine Grizzard as Du\, with John Lambie\, Dan Olson\, and Cynthia Tank.
