DESCRIPTION:Jacksonville’s “Walk through History” tours are back! \nAt 10 a.m. every Saturday from May 24th through August 30th\, Historic Jacksonville\, Inc. will be offering one-hour guided walks through Jacksonville’s National Historic Landmark District\, the first on the West Coast! Participants will take a stroll through history\, visiting government and commercial buildings\, fraternal lodges\, and homes that capture the stories of the people who transformed a gold rush town into Southern Oregon’s 19th Century social\, governmental\, and commercial hub. They’ll learn how gambling money built a church; how the Civil War ended a successful mercantile partnership; how a saloon housed the county’s first museum; how fire reshaped the town; and how a railroad both destroyed the town and preserved it. \nWalking tours leave from Jacksonville’s New City Hall (the historic “Courthouse Square”) at 206 North 5th Street between West C and D streets and cover about one mile with multiple stops. Tours are FREE but donations are encouraged! All monies go towards the preservation and maintenance of Jacksonville’s historic buildings. \nFor individuals who prefer not to “stretch their legs\,” Historic Jacksonville’s website (https://www.historicjacksonville.org) offers numerous ways to explore Jacksonville virtually. DESCRIPTION:You are invited to “Step Behind the Counter” of the oldest financial institution in the Pacific Northwest—Jacksonville’s 1863 Beekman Bank Museum—when Historic Jacksonville\, Inc. opens the museum for summer tours. \nEstablished as a “gold dust” office in 1856\, it was the first “bank” north of San Francisco. \nScheduled 2025 “banking hours” are 11am to 3 pm\, Saturdays and Sundays\, from May 24 through August 31. The Beekman Bank Museum is located at 110 W. California Street (the corner of California and North 3rd streets) in Jacksonville. Guests can interact with costumed docents sharing stories of late 19th Century banking practices\, gold shipping\, and handshake deals; step behind the counter and peer in drawers containing old checks\, stage schedules\, and paperwork; and enter the vault that stored millions in gold! \nVisitors can spend as much or as little time as they like—although we suggest they allow at least 30 minutes. Tours are FREE\, but donations are encouraged since all monies go towards the preservation and maintenance of this historic legacy! \nThe original bank was established in 1856 as a “gold dust” office. (If we’re factual\, it was a safe.) Cornelius Beekman had come to Jacksonville in 1854 as an express rider between Yreka and Jacksonville carrying newspaper\, mail\, parcels\, and gold over the Siskiyous. When his employer’s firm failed\, he established Jacksonville’s Beekman’s Express and his gold dust office. In 1863 he became Jacksonville’s Wells Fargo agent and constructed the Beekman Bank. \nDuring Jacksonville’s heyday as the governmental\, commercial\, and social hub of Southern Oregon in the late 1800s\, the Beekman’s Bank saw over $40 million in gold cross its counters—equivalent to over $1 billion today! The current 1863 structure is the only commercial wooden building on California Streeet to survive Jacksonville’s many fires. DESCRIPTION:The May Community Gathering Bonfire will be 5-9 pm May 24th at the Island Fire Pit in Lithia Park. \nParking is across from 381 Granite Street. The intention is to gather as a community\, so anyone wanting to gather in this way is welcome. Children are welcome\, and people of all ages tend to show up. You can stop by anytime between 5 and 9 pm for a little while or a long time. Feel free to invite people. Please bring your own drinks\, snacks\, and chair (if you want to sit by the fire.) \nThese bonfires typically involve sitting around the fire and sharing what is going on in each other’s lives. There tend to be some of the same and different people at each event. Participants typically leave feeling connected and like they had a good time. The group is very inviting to anyone who decides to show up. \nThese gatherings have been held for the past year for people in the neighborhood and the community and are now shared on Meetup\, Facebook and community calendars. Please feel free to invite additional people who wish to gather as a community. \nThe Island Fire Pit in Lithia Park is on an island on Ashland Creek. We will place a sign as you approach the parking lot across from 381 Granite Street. \nOnce you park\, proceed on foot over the bridge and go right on the Lithia Park trail. Soon\, you will see another bridge off the main trail to the right\, and you will cross over the bridge to the small island. Mountain Ave.\, Ashland. \nThe performance\, “Cannons Into Bells\,” will have performances at 7:30 p.m. Saturday\, May 24\, and 2 p.m. Sunday\, May 25. \nThe program explores the idea of transformations. \nOur feature commissioned work\, “Cannons into Bells”\, by Repertory Singers’ Composer in Residence\, Jodi French\, explores the tragic cycle of bells being melted into cannons during times of war\, then changed back in times of peace. It is an urgent plea for a better world in which we “kindle the fire of love\, melting the armor of our hearts into bells of peace”. \nOther featured works include Joby Talbot’s ethereal “Leon”\, the story of pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago — the “Way of St. James” — hoping to transform their lives\, set for 17-part choir a cappella; Samuel Barber’s Agnus Dei\, a texted version of his famous Adagio for Strings\, performed with choir and orchestra; and Dan Forrest’s grand setting of e.e. cummings’ “I thank thee God for most this amazing day” for choir and orchestra\, celebrating the transformative power of nature to turn our “no” into “yes.”

He went to Madrid in 1919\, where he met Salvador Dali\, who would later design the scenery for a production of Lorca’s play. \nDali would later design the scenery for the Barcelona production of Lorca’s play Mariana Pineda (1927). \nLorca’s two most successful poetry collections were Canciones (Songs)\, published in 1927\, and Romancero gitano (the Gypsy Ballads)\, published in 1928. Romancero gitano was especially daring for the time with its exploration of sexual themes and made Lorca a celebrity in the literary world.
