SUMMARY:Walking the Way During Lent
DESCRIPTION:Trinity Ashland will offer the opportunity to reflect on Jesus’ final day in Jerusalem. \nThe spiritual practice known as Way of the Cross\, Stations of the Cross and the Via Dolorosa has it roots in the intentions of pilgrims to the Holy Land over many hundreds of years. The Episcopal Book of Occasional Services lays out two versions of the Way of the Cross. This year we will use the Scriptural Way of the Cross. Come\, be a pilgrim the first six of the seven Fridays in Lent. Join us at noon on Fridays beginning March 7 and concluding on April 11 in the Sanctuary. \nSee more at https://www.trinitychurchashland.org/ or https://www.facebook.com/TrinityAshland/.

SUMMARY:ART ON FIRST: An Artful Life\, Solo Exhibition John Palombo
DESCRIPTION:Currently featured at ART on FIRST are nature inspired paintings by John Palombo. With just enough challenges growing up to gain some deep colors and spectrums in his life\, John has made use of the follies and torture of being human and turned them into joy and happiness by finding something that truly speaks to his soul – visiting remote natural areas and painting. \nJohn loves color and creating color. His focus has always been on landscapes of Southern Oregon\, particularly Southeastern Oregon. When creating a composition\, John’s interest is to translate the magic that he sees in the world and in nature onto his surface. With this\, he hopes to inspire his viewers to find the same magic\, or something that is personal to just them. \nFor more information\, please visit www.artonfirstashland.com. \nMonday\, March 31 – Monday\, April 28\, 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. \nOpening Reception: Friday\, April 4\, 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Three short films about resistance
DESCRIPTION:Producer/Director Walter Haussner is presenting three films about resistance at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday\, April 11 and 12\, 2025.\n\nThe venue is Gypsy Road Studio\, 369 E. Main St.\, Ashland\, Oregon.\n\n“Dulce et Decorum Est” (5 minutes)\, a dramatization of Wilfred Owen’s classic World War I poem starring Steven Oliver\, starts the evening out. Elizabeth Owen\, niece of the poet and president of The Wilfred Owen Association\, said this about Oliver’s performance:  “What a wonderful rendering of Dulce. I think that it is the best I have ever heard. I feel that Steven must have experienced dreadful things.  I hope I am wrong and that he is just an amazing actor. The way it comes from him is from his heart and soul. He is not just reciting it”.\n\nThe evening’s next film\, also starring Steven Oliver\, is “The Partisan” (4 minutes)\, a dramatization of an anti-fascist anthem about the French Resistance in World War II. The song was composed in 1943 by Russian-born Anna Marly\, with lyrics by French Resistance leader Emmanuel d’Astier de La Vigerie. Hy Zaret later adapted it for English and it is this version that was popularized by singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen.\n\nThe evening concludes with a screening of “Xpendable” (30 minutes)\, which takes the evening’s theme into the realm of Film Noir. Inspired by Evan Hunter’s (The Birds\, High and Low) early short story “The Last Spin\,” “Xpendable” tells the story of a dispute between two crime organizations and the decision to settle matters with a representative from each “club”. Whereas the original story dealt with juvenile males from rival gangs\, “Xpendable” shifts the focus to age and gender\, along with a dose of dark humor. Featuring actors Preston Mead\, Annette MacGregor\, Adam Lewis\, Jeffrey Hunter\, and Johnny Whelchel\, “Xpendable” is the director’s love letter to Film Noir and David Mamet’s view that “Old age and treachery will always beat youth and exuberance”.\n\nThe three films have been featured in over 75 festivals worldwide and have won over 25 awards. Walter Haussner will introduce the films and will be available for questions and answers.\n\nAdmission is free.

SUMMARY:Tutunov Piano Series presents: Ilya Shmukler
DESCRIPTION:The Tutunov Piano Series presents: Ilya Shmukler in concert on Friday\, April 11th at 7:30pm at the SOU Music Recital Hall. Livestream available: $35/household. \nTickets are $35/reserved seating\, $30 seniors and are available at https://sou.universitytickets.com \nABOUT THE ARTIST: \nWhen he was 3 years old\, Moscow native Ilya Shmukler’s mother found him jumping on the bed and beautifully singing Robertino Loreti’s “Jamaica.” She immediately recognized his musical talent and started him in lessons. It was important to his non-musician parents that he be raised as a well-rounded person\, so his early years were also spent with school\, table tennis\, and ballroom dancing. But at 10\, he says his life changed after applying for and winning his first music competition and attending the subsequent international summer academy: “There I discovered a true musical life\, and I fell in love with it\, inspiring me to commit my life to music.” \nHe performed his first recital at age 12\, and made his orchestral debut at 14. He has since made solo appearances in Europe and North America\, and has performed with the Mariinsky Theatre\, Sendai Philharmonic\, Bayer Symphoniker\, Tambov Symphonic\, and New Music Orchestras\, among others. \nIlya is a laureate of many international piano competitions\, taking top prizes at the New York Virtuoso\, Lewisville Lake Symphony\, Artist Presentation Society (St. Louis)\, Shigeru Kawai (Tokyo)\, Sriabin–Rachmaninov (Bulgaria)\, and Rachmaninov (St. Petersburg) Competitions. He was also a competitor in the 2017 Cliburn Competition. In 2021\, he won the Carnegie Weill Recital Hall Debut Audition and will make his New York debut at the venerated venue in December 2022. \nHe completed his master’s degree with honors at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory in 2021\, under the guidance of Elena Kuznetsova and Sergey Kuznetsov. Presently\, he studies with 2001 Cliburn Gold Medalist Stanislav Ioudenitch at the International Center for Music at Park University in Parkville\, Missouri.
