SUMMARY:PACING: Photographs by Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon University’s Schneider Museum of Art (SMA) is thrilled to announce its summer exhibition\, “PACING: Photographs by Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak.” \nThe exhibition will open at 5 p.m. on Thursday\, June 13\, and will be on view through August 10\, 2024. \nAbout the Exhibition: \nThe act of pacing involves moving forward in a measured\, rhythmic manner\, where each step is taken in consideration of the one before it. “PACING” explores this duality of ease and tension through the lens-based works of three midcareer\, female-identifying photographers: Dru Donovan\, Melanie Flood\, and Tarrah Krajnak. Each artist employs performative methods to document their bodies and those of others\, reflecting on their relationships to social histories\, expectations\, and structures. \nMeet the Artists: \nMelanie Flood has used the camera as a tool for self-expression throughout her life. Her photographs\, spanning from childhood to the present\, explore her evolving femininity and critique gender constructs through a blend of vulnerability and playful experimentation. \nTarrah Krajnak reclaims the photographic medium’s masculine history through her Indigenous transracial adoptee experience. Her interrelated works use the body to reenact lost histories\, employing rituals and performances to create a continuous connection between her presence\, the work’s origins\, and its future. \nDru Donovan highlights the strength and ability of the female body in both athletes and caregivers. Her crisp black-and-white images juxtapose the force and endurance required for various actions\, emphasizing the interdependence and mutual responsibility inherent in these roles. \nMore information: https://sma.sou.edu/exhibitions/pacing-photographs-by-dru-donovan-melanie-flood-and-tarrah-krajnak/ \nImage: Dru Donovan\, Liberty Pose\, 2017\, Video loop\, 35 x 57 inches\, courtesy of the artist.

SUMMARY:Animal Vision and Eye Health
DESCRIPTION:Did you know sloth eyes turn the world right side up for them while they hang upside-down from the trees; that some birds who look plain to us look technicolor to each other; that flowers frequently look like bullseyes to bee eyes? \nCome join us in learning from Dr. Cassandra Bliss\, a local veterinary ophthalmologist (animal eye doctor)\, about how different animal’s eyes function and how they see the world around them. She will also share information about common pet eye health\, care\, and issues to be aware of. All ages are welcome.

SUMMARY:Nuclear Power: Unaffordable at any size
DESCRIPTION:Misinformation and disinformation have been the hallmarks of the fossil fuel corporate campaign to undermine climate science and thwart action on climate change. \nThe nuclear industry is not far behind as it constantly tries desperately to sell itself as a viable\, if not essential\, component of a low greenhouse gas emissions solution to the climate crisis. \nLloyd Marbet and Cathy Cudy of the Oregon Conservancy Foundatin will provide a presentation entitled “Nuclear Power: Unaffordable at Any Price” at 6 p.m. Wednesday\, July 17\, at the Rogue Valley Metaphysical Library\, 1757 Ashland St.\, Ashland. The pair will highlight the drawbacks of nuclear power\, including the oft-touted small modular nuclear reactor solution. \nFollowing the presentation\, Lloyd and Cathy will be joined by SOCAN co-facilitator Alan Journet for a panel discussion. SOCAN programs are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:The Dark Room: A Memoir of Triumph will be discussed by the author – Claudia Chotzen
DESCRIPTION:The Dark Room weaves a complex family tapestry\, the author’s personal experience growing up in the 1950s\, 60s\, and 70s as one of eight children of parents who fled Nazi Germany separately\, met and married quickly\, then re-started their lives as Americans in Seattle. \nHer mother juggled raising her eight children with her career as a photographer and her passion as a civil rights activist. To the outside world she was an icon\, a hero. \nInside the family home\, a different story unraveled. Claudia’s mother violated her trust and her body\, a betrayal of the most profound maternal bond. \nAnd yet\, The Dark Room is not a story of hatred\, revenge\, or bitterness; rather it is\, by turns\, healing\, funny\, and inspirational. Ultimately\, it is a testament about the ability to break the cycle of abuse\, to thrive and to love. \nPrior to writing The Dark Room\, Claudia was an attorney and a law clerk for a justice on the Hawaii Supreme Court. Later she became a television producer\, creating award-winning documentaries for the NBC and CBS affiliates in Honolulu. She is a mother to two sons\, a grandmother to four grandsons\, and a partner to her husband for almost 50 years.
