SUMMARY:Rogue Valley Men’s Circle Fire Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Weekly: A weekly Men’s Circle Fire Ceremony on Monday nights from 6:30-8:30 pm around the fire at the Island Fire Pit in scenic Lithia Park in Ashland\, Oregon. \nWhat could be more natural than gathering around the fire and talking about the challenges of being a man and/or assuming masculine roles in our current culture? \nCeremony: This Men’s Circle is conducted as a shamanic ceremony to establish connection and community. It is compatible with any religious and spiritual beliefs. We offer intentions\, smudge with sage\, and release things into the fire. A weekly theme such as “confidence” or “purpose” is introduced. \nTalking Stick and Fire Ceremony: A talking stick is passed to speak your truth on this topic and things coming up in your life. The Men’s Circle will be conducted as a fire ceremony as long as we are allowed to build fires this year. After this time\, a new form of ceremony will be considered to continue the Men’s Circle. \nInclusive: This ceremony is for anyone looking to awaken and integrate dynamic masculine energy and roles. This includes all gender identities and sexual orientations. \nDrug and alcohol-free: This form of ceremony does not utilize plant medicine or psychedelics. Please do not be under the influence of any drugs or alcohol during this ceremony. \nAge: This ceremony is for ages 18 and older. \nFacilitator: This ceremony is conducted by Michael Hoffman\, LCSW. He is a licensed psychotherapist and spiritual coach. He trained with a spiritual teacher/shaman for 22 years and offered psychotherapy and relationship counseling for the past 28 years. Michael’s role and responsibility as the facilitator is to ensure that the ceremony is emotionally safe. Judgment and criticism will be stopped. He will also encourage you to venture deeper into your dynamic masculine energy. \nDirections: The ceremony is at the Island Fire Pit in Ashland’s scenic Lithia Park. It is just south (away from downtown) of the Parks Office between the Cotton Memorial and Hillside on a small island in Ashland Creek. There is a parking area off Granite St. \nYou can just show up or register at https://www.naturalwayofbeing.com/rogue-valley-men’s-circle-ceremony. You can also get more information on this webpage. \nCost: The suggested donation is $15 per circle. You can pay at the ceremony with cash or Venmo. You can pay online with a credit card\, debit card\, or HSA credit card by registering at the above web address. \nQuestions: Feel free to call Michael Hoffman at 541-639-6246 with questions or concerns. Hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:CLOSE TO HOME: Sexual Abusers and Serial Killers\, Memoir and Murder with author Janine O’Neill
DESCRIPTION:On February 5\, 1981\, a young couple passed by Ashland as they drove from Edmonds\, Washington to Nellis Air Force Base\, near Las Vegas\, for the man’s first military assignment. Late that night\, they were murdered by a long-haul trucker and self-proclaimed serial killer named Ward Weaver Jr. after their car broke down in California’s Tehachapi Mountains. \nTwenty-one years later\, Weaver’s eponymously named son\, Ward Weaver III\, murdered two girls in Clackamas County\, Oregon. Then he buried one of the girl’s bodies under concrete in his own backyard\, just as his father had done with the young woman he’d kidnapped near Tehachapi. \nIn 2016\, while Ward Weaver Jr. was on death row in California and Ward III was serving life sentences in Oregon\, their son/grandson\, Francis Weaver\, was also convicted of murder in Clackamas County. My book uses the Weaver family’s unique history as a hook from which to hang a broader story about why some people are more likely than others to become victims of violent crime\, perpetrators of violent crime or both. \nAs an attorney\, I prosecuted crimes committed against children in Clackamas County for seven years. Had I not left the district attorney’s office there\, I would have expected to be one of the deputy DAs assigned to Ward Weaver III’s case. As it was\, I covered the story in my second career as a reporter for the Portland Tribune. I also am the former executive director of the Oregon Crime Victims Law Center and the mother of a child who—like Weaver III’s victims—was sexually assaulted by a known\, trusted adult. (My family’s experience is part of the memoir aspect of my book\, which I published under my unmarried name\, O’Neill\, to protect my family’s privacy.) \nWhat one reviewer said about the book \n“Best book\, local and true crime edition: Janine O’Neill’s Close to Home\, in which the Portland journalist and attorney who covered the 2002 Oregon City disappearances of Ashley Pond and Miranda Gaddis takes a look at those murders (and others) through a multi-faceted lens: historical\, biological\, legal\, personal and intensely analytical. O’Neill tells several extremely difficult yet well-organized stories through her excellent and tight writing and top-notch investigative chops\, along with a dash of\, somehow\, self-effacing wit.” From the Portland Business Journal‘s “The PBJ’s best of 2023 in arts and culture.”
