SUMMARY:Uncovering Oregon’s Black History: Oregon’s Black Pioneers
DESCRIPTION:People of African descent have lived and worked in Oregon since before the founding of the earliest English-speaking settlements in the Americas. Despite this\, the popular narrative of our state’s history excludes the experiences of African Americans before the mid-20th century. \nThis erasure is the result of historic legal and social marginalization that contributes to the ignorance of Oregon’s Black heritage\, as well as influencing contemporary disparities in housing access\, community investment\, and policing. \nAt the March 18 event\, Mariah Rocker\, Public Programs and Exhibits Manager for Black Pioneers will attempt to correct the record by highlighting key individuals and events that characterize Oregon’s unique and centuries-old Black history. The event is free and open to the public. For more information and to RSVP\, please go to our website at: https://ashlandtogether.org/event/uncovering-oregons-black-history/ \nAshland Sunrise Project is an Ashland Together initiative in partnership with the Oregon Remembrance Project. We thank the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for venue support of this event.

SUMMARY:"Tough Broad" author Caroline Paul to speak at Ashland library
DESCRIPTION:Author Caroline Paul will talk about her latest work of nonfiction\, “Tough Broad: From Boogie Boarding to Wing Walking — How Outdoor Adventure Improves Our Lives As We Age” at 6 p.m. Monday\, March 18\, at the Ashland library\, 410 Siskiyou Blvd.\, Ashland. \nThe event is free and open to the public. Paul has been an outdoor adventurer her whole life. From mountain biking in the Bolivian Andes to pitching a tent\, mid-blizzard\, on Denali to flying experimental planes\, she has never been a stranger to the beauty and benefits of outdoor activity. But as she hit her mid-fifties and was often the only woman paddling a surfboard or riding a skateboard\, she began to wonder why women aren’t encouraged to keep adventuring into old age. \n“Tough Broad” shows how outdoor adventure may be the single best solution for a healthy brain and body\, a confident mindset\, and a longer\, happier life.
