Join six local writers from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday\, Sept. 9\, at the Guild Gallery & Art Center\, 24353 Redwood Highway\, Kerby\, for a series of interactive workshops aimed to actively inspire your own literary practice! \nThe 2023 keynote speaker will be Paul Fattig\, lifelong Illinois Valley resident and Marine Corps Veteran. Reading widely is an essential exercise to successful writing.” In addition to his keynote\, Paul Fattig will be presenting “Tapping into One’s Roots: A Workshop in Non-Fiction Prose.” Following the keynote will be three 90-minute sessions\, each with a choice of two separate workshops\, for a total of six different presentations. Facilitators will provide inspiration and support while guiding attendees to create their own fresh writing. \nAdditional presenters and workshops include: Kokayi Nosakhere with “Effective Protest Writing and Writing American History”; Amy Miller with “Relationships & Interdependence Poetry”; Diana Coogle with “What’s on Your Conscience? Let’s Write about it: A Personal Essay Workshop”; Gary Lark with “Taking My Self to Work”; Michael Spring with “Into the Surreal: Creating Poems with Pliable Dreamscapes.” \nCoffee\, lunch\, and refreshments are included. The day will conclude with an open mic at 4 p.m.\, in which participants can share the work they created throughout the day. The event fee is $35-$55\, on a sliding scale\, and students are $25. SUMMARY:Marty O’Reilly presented by the Ashland Folk Collective
DESCRIPTION:Marty’s voice is beautiful and unique\, his lyrics stark yet lush over gritty electrified guitar\, melding beautifully into genre-defying music within the vast definitions of Americana. One can hear an urgency and complexity in the songs\, expressing something elemental and perhaps contradictory: love and anger\, joy and pain\, real and imagined. \nThe live performance is at the core of Marty’s projects. On stage\, whether accompanied by a band\, or alone\, he enters a trance and the music is born again as something new every night. It’s what his followers call “magic”. He goes from raw gospel blues to cinematic epics\, from heavy driving grooves to delicately arranged folk songs. \nCalvin Arsenia is a singer\, songwriter\, and multi-instrumentalist hailing from Kansas City\, Missouri. He first gained widespread recognition for his soulful vocals and virtuosic classical harp playing\, which he often incorporates into his live performances. Arsenia’s music has been described as a blend of folk\, pop\, and R&B\, and he continues to use his gift of music to draw bridges of empathy between communities separated by race\, class\, gender\, or religion.
